Newcastle High School Page 1 February, 2012 PRINCIPALS REPORT Welcome to the 2012 school year. Despite the wet weather the school year has commenced smoothly. I would like to welcome all the new students, especially Year 7 students and their parents/carers and I would encourage you to attend the Meet the Teacher BBQ on Tuesday 14 th February at 6.00pm. This is an occasion for parents/carers to meet teachers and be able to put a face to a name. The BBQ is funded by the P&C and I thank the P&C for their support with this. If you can attend please return the enclosed RSVP slip. The Year 7 camp is being organised and details have been sent home with students. A big welcome to the large number staff appointed to Newcastle High School. In English Mrs Sue Parrott and Mr Ian Watson have been appointed as permanent teachers and Mr Christian Carswell is replacing Mr Chris Edwards who is on leave. Mrs Michelle Smith has been appointed to the part time vacancy in Visual Art, Mr Martyn Skinner has been appointed to the Industrial Arts position left vacant by Mr Dransfield‟s transfer to Scone High, Mrs Renee Wells has been appointed to the Mathematics faculty along with Mr Graham Hudson who is filling in temporary vacancies. Mrs Ruth Cornford is filling a Science and HSIE position and Ms Erin McKay is also filling a position in HSIE. It is anticipated that these teachers will be with us for the entire school year. A number of casual teachers is also assisting filling short term vacancies. I was both delighted and saddened to hear of Mrs Rennie‟s promotion to Deputy Principal at Whitebridge High School. As an ex student of NGHS Mrs Rennie had a real passion for not only the students and staff but also the history and tradition that this site holds in the community. worked on lots of whole school and community projects including Presentation Days and the uniform committee. On behalf of the whole community I wish her well in her new role. Thanks to Mr Wallace for relieving as Head Teacher Mathematics while the position is filled. Mr Prior is relieving as HT Industrial Arts for the next few weeks. Our 2011 Higher School Certificate students did well. Students who were aiming for university have been accepted into a diverse range of courses, law, communication, business, engineering, as well as teaching and nursing. Many other students have gained employment. I was delighted to hear that two students had work accepted for Art Express and Design Tech. Overall, students did very well earning 15 band 6‟s and 60 band 5‟s in a wide range of subjects including Legal Studies, English, Mathematics, French, Chemistry, Visual Arts, Community and Family Studies, Design and Technology, Music, Food Technology, Studies of Religion, Ancient History, Biology and Retail. Excellent results in this range of subjects indicate that the staff are successfully delivering the curriculum. Congratulations to Marguerite Simmons who scored a band 6 in all her subjects. Congratulations to Haynes Crossley who has been selected as part of the Hunter CHS Open Cricket team. Haynes is the first of many students to be selected to zone and regional teams. As part of the celebration for the start of the school year Commencement Assemblies have been held for all years. At these assemblies the DEC rules and Newcastle High School‟s Positive Behaviour for Learning expectations are outlined to students. It has been very encouraging to see the entire school in uniform since the start of the year. Uniform is a key indicator of a successful school supported by its community. The school day commences at 8.45am and finishes at 3.00pm. All students need to be at school by 8.45am unless they are senior students and have a permitted late start that has been approved by both parents/carers and the school. The applications for flexible hours will be issued next week. The attendance rate at NHS is well below the state average and needs to improve. Many students arrive at school on time but wander off or deliberately arrive late. This is truancy and can have serious consequences for students and parents/carers. In circumstances where a student is late due to unforeseen circumstances students need to bring a note explaining why they are late. There has been a lot of recent news about the changes to Year 10 and the School Certificate. The only thing that has changed has been that Year 10 will not complete external exams in November. Students will still be required to complete a series of assessment tasks and tests in all subjects. Students will be required to remain at school until the end of the school year and have a satisfactory record of attendance. Change of personal details. It is vitally important that the school has accurate details from parents/carers. The school often needs to contact home when students are ill or have accidents and accurate information is essential. A form is attached to this newsletter. It is also essential that the school be informed of changes to students‟

medications and medical conditions. Ms Sager, the Head Teacher Welfare, will be developing Individual Health Care plans for students who require these. In this bulletin is a list of key personnel in the school and who the best person to contact when issues arise is. Please be aware that all staff are very busy. Teachers teach classes for most of each day so sometimes cannot respond immediately to a parental request, but they do the best they can. If parents need to come to the school the best thing is to make an appointment with a teacher, and not just walk in. I ask that all parents show respect and dignity when on the school premises. Shouting, swearing and threatening behaviour will not be tolerated and can have serious consequences for parents/carers as well as impacting on the well being of staff. To ensure the safety of the site parents and members of the public do not have an automatic right to enter the school grounds beyond the foyer without my permission and are usually accompanied by a staff member. This ensures the safety and protection of all students. Hope to see many of you at the upcoming P&C meeting, the Year 9 laptop meetings or the Meet the Teacher BBQ.

MATHEMATICS The faculty of Mathematics would like to welcome back all students to their mathematical studies. After the summer vacation they should all be brimming with enthusiasm for new challenges. Students should see evidence of the technological upgrades in some classrooms and they should reap the benefits of these but they must remember that there is no substitute for diligence in learning. As in previous years, for students in Years 7 to 10 to gain access to a textbook, there is a $10 textbook hiring fee payable to class teachers. A receipt will be given once payment is made. Senior students purchase their own textbooks but there is an ample supply of used books for sale at varying prices from past students. To reduce costs to the faculty and allow us to provide up to date learning materials, it is important that students return their old textbooks from previous years. There may be some of these hiding under beds at home - if so, we would welcome their return no matter how old or in what condition they may be. Students are also required to bring a scientific calculator to Mathematics classes each day. These are available for purchase at the school for $20. Finally, all members of the Mathematics faculty are always happy to help with the progress of all students and can be approached for assistance during breaks in the school day. PDHPE Mr See, Mr Newman, Mrs Dennis, Mrs Blatchford and myself are all back on deck for 2012. In practical lessons (one period each week) Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 are starting the year with a games unit. After this first unit of work Years 7-10 will then participate in Athletics, Gymnastics, Dance, First Aid and three Games units of work. All students are required to change into their PDHPE uniform at the beginning of the lesson and back into their correct school uniform at the end of the lesson. PE uniform is the school red PDHPE/Sport polo shirt and school PDHPE/Sport shorts. (The school‟s old Sport/PDHPE uniform can still be worn if students still have it). Shoes need to be a sports/running style shoe. They need to be lace-up and appropriate to run and play sport in. The sole of the shoe and sidewalls should give sufficient support to the feet, legs and back. Canvas shoes are NOT permitted. Socks need to be worn. Stockings are not permitted. Please encourage the wearing of the appropriate uniform. Your child will not be allowed to participate if they do not have an appropriate pair of sport shoes. The theory component of PDHPE will be studied by all students in Years 7-10 for one period each fortnight. A number of very important and relevant topics are covered in the units of work studied. Your child will bring a note home which will need to be signed and returned to their teacher. Please ensure this note is returned. Please feel free to contact me at school if you have any questions regarding your child and his/her progress in PDHPE. P Wagner Head Teacher

REPRESENTATIVE SPORT Mr Wagner and Mrs Blatchford will be co-ordinating the knockout teams and representative trials this year. At this early stage of the year we do not have any sporting results to report. In future bulletins we will include a list of the Knockout Competitions that Newcastle High School will be entering in 2012 and the teachers who will coach these teams. We will also include information on trials for Hunter Region Sporting Teams for this year. A copy will also be available on the school website (www.newcastle-h.schools.nsw.edu.au) This information is conveyed to the students via the red noticeboard outside the PD/H/PE staffroom and in the DAILY NOTICES that are read in mentor.

Students who play in these teams or attend trials are marked as being present at school and are expected to see their teachers or friends to catch up on any missed work. Students will only be allowed to represent in these teams if they are satisfactorily attending and participating in their school sport period each week and behaving in a manner which is appropriate and acceptable in all areas of the school. Any enquires can be directed to Mr Wagner or Mrs Blatchford at the PDHPE staffroom. P Wagner and N Blatchford Sports Organisers

SCHOOL SPORT - 2012 Sport this year will be timetabled for 1 period each week for each junior student. Classes will be taught by the same teacher for the entire year, but on a number of occasions teachers will possibly „team teach‟ with another teacher. All sports activities in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 will be held at National Park. The students will cross Smith Street under the supervision of their sport teacher. Listed below are our proposed activities for 2012. The students will participate in each activity for approximately 5 weeks. We are hoping students will have fun and enjoy exercise whilst also learning the skills of the different games and activities. It is also an opportunity to socialise with the other students. Hopefully they will not only improve their fitness and skill levels but will develop a desire to be involved in lifelong physical activity.

Year 7 and Year 9 Australian Football Volleyball Soccer Netball Touch Cricket

Year 8 and Year 10 Netball Campbell Soup Cricket Walking / Fitness Basketball Touch Volleyball

All junior students are required to participate in sport each week. This is a Department of Education and Communities requirement. It is therefore necessary for all students to participate in their sport activity on a regular basis. Student attendance and participation will be monitored and parents will be informed if their child/ward is not meeting requirements.

February, 2012

Students will be required to change into their PDHPE/Sport uniform for the sport lesson each week or if their sport period is the last period of the day they can wear their sport uniform to school all day. Year 7 students may wear their sports uniform all day on the days that they have sport. This requires students to have their PDHPE/Sport shirt and PDHPE/Sport shorts and an appropriate pair of lace up sports shoes. Students should participate to the best of their ability and play in the spirit of fair play and good sportsmanship.

Students should follow teacher instructions at all times to ensure that they are always participating in a safe manner and safe environment.

Students must not cross Smith Street unless being supervised by their teacher.

INDUSTRIAL ARTS This year we see a couple of changes in the staffing arrangements within the Industrial Arts department, with Mr Dransfield successfully transferring to Scone High School. Mr Dransfield has been an asset to the school and his presence will be missed by both students and staff. We wish him well in his new position. We would also like to take this opportunity to welcome a new member to the team, Mr Skinner. He will be teaching Engineering Studies to the senior students and I‟m sure he will enjoy his experiences at this great school. After a great deal of preparation and research Year 12 Industrial Technology students are beginning to undertake construction of their major work. Their chosen projects will showcase the skills and knowledge they have developed and acquired within the timber products and furniture industry. We wish these and all Year 12 students good luck in their final school year. It is also worth noting that our fantastic trade training centre facilities are up and running. The school now has state of the art equipment to cater for the learning needs of our students. We hope you all had a happy and safe holiday period and we look forward to working with you throughout the new year. Industrial Arts Staff

SCIENCE NEWS The Science faculty welcomes the addition of Ms Cornforth to the Science staff. She is teaching in both the HSIE and Science faculties and I am sure she will enjoy her time at Newcastle High School. We are very happy with the number of senior classes running in 2012. In year 11 all 5 Science courses are running at Newcastle High School. They are Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth and Environmental Science and Senior Science. This reflects student‟s interest in science and the excellent teaching that takes place in the science faculty. In year 9 the Science faculty is running Marine and Aquaculture technology, an elective course. It examines the marine environment, commercial operations and recreational water use. In term 1 students will learn about water safety, snorkelling and developing aquarium environments. Students in Science all receive an assessment policy outlining the tasks and marks that will be awarded in 2012. These documents will be pasted at the front of student books and will become an important part of student planning and study programs. Students should always make sure that tasks are completed on time and to the best of their ability. Science classes, 7-10, are graded. This gives students who excel in class to be promoted. This will occur at the end of semester 1 and provide an incentive for students. Science will not be examined externally for the HSC in 2012. Students will be assessed and given grades based on their performance in class and will need to ensure they complete all tasks and remain engaged in class until the end of the year. FOOD AND TEXTILES TECHNOLOGY Welcome back to the 2012 school year and a very big welcome to our Year 7 students and their parents. We look forward to working with you. At the end of 2011, we received our HSC results and Congratulations must go to Year 12 2011 and their teachers on their excellent achievements in the HSC. The following is a brief overview of the 2011 results: Community and Family Studies: Results were 5.23% above the state mean, which was the second best performing subject at Newcastle High School in this regard. One student achieved a Band 6 placing them in the top 3.84% of the state. 42% of the students achieved a Band 5 compared to 25.13% of the state. Overall, twelve out of the twenty six candidates achieved results which placed them in the top 30% of the state. Eleven students achieved a Band 4 whilst the remaining three students achieved a Band 3. Design and Technology: Results were 5.12% above the state mean, which was the third best performing subject at Newcastle High School. Two students achieved a Band 6 placing them in the top 18% of the state. Chelsea Hanlons‟ Major Independent Project was nominated and selected to be part of the Design Tech Exhibition. This is an outstanding achievement as to be selected for this exhibition

the project needs to be of an exceptional standard. 100% of candidates achieved a Band 4 or above with 64% of candidates achieving a Band 5 or above.

Food Technology: Results were just below the state mean at -1.13%. Two students achieved a Band 5 placing them in the top 22% of the state. 56% of students achieved a Band 4 or above.

Languages Other Than English. Room 35 received a facelift on its Japanese wall thanks to the considerable artistic talents of Alexis (Lexie) Dewar of Year 9. Lexie loves drawing Japanese anime characters and generously spent her free time and some class time in the last week of Term 4 painting characters from popular Studio Ghibli animation films, such as

Spirited Away, Ponyo and Totoro. Thank you Lexie! ありがとうね

Attention: All families interested in hosting an exchange student.

Every year NHS hosts students from France, Japan, Germany and other countries. Exchange students and their Australian host families always report what a memorable and enriching experience this can be. If your family is interested in hosting in 2012, please contact Ms Engel in the Languages Department. We are looking for families for 4 French students between the ages of 14 and

17 years, for Term 3. They arrive in Newcastle on the 6th of July, will stay with their host family for the holidays and will then attend school with their host friend from Monday 15th of July until Wednesday the 1st of August. If you are interested in hosting one of these students please see Ms Engel or contact the organiser direct at: [email protected]

WELFARE REPORT Welcome back to everyone for 2012. I first want to thank the students, staff and parents for their support and patience as I settled into Newcastle High in Term 4. It is a great privilege to have been appointed here and I look forward to getting to know the school community better over the coming year. The Welfare Team Students at Newcastle High are fortunate to be supported by a large number of people. Each year has two Year Advisors and these are a great first point of contact. If you have any questions or concerns about your student please e-mail ([email protected]) or call the Administration Office and a Year Advisor will return the call as soon as they possibly can. Parents who want to speak face to face with a Year Advisor should ring and make an appointment to do so as they are often on class or have other commitments and will often be unable to conduct an interview on the spot. Year 7 Karen Hines & Lauren Wood Year 8 Bronwyn Lidden & Andrew Doherty Year 9 Sam Crichton & Andrew Guinane Year 10 Debbie Ellis & Angela Queenan Year 11 Darren Farrar & Stephen Prior Year 12 Alison Dennis and Brittany Benton We are also lucky to have the support of a school counsellor, Mr Terry Sheetrum, who is available to see students and parents. This can be organised by contacting the Administration Office. Mrs Margaret Livingstone our School Chaplain is also present in the school three days a week. Her role is to support families and students who may be experiencing difficult circumstances. Amy King was appointed to the school late in Term 3 2011 as a School Support Officer. Her role is to help individual and small groups of students with issues such as bullying and building resilience. Ms King will also be responsible for running a range of programs for targeted students. Please contact me (Ms Sager) if you have any questions regarding the Welfare Team. Current Medical Information In order to ensure that we have the most up to date information, if your student has recently been diagnosed with a medical issue or if there have been any changes to their current medical condition or management/treatment could you please contact me so that we can update our system? For serious medical conditions and severe allergies that may cause anaphylaxis, a Health Care Plan will need to be developed in conjunction with the school, yourself and appropriate medical specialists if a current plan does not already exist. Over the next few weeks I will be making contact with families who have indicated that their student has a serious medical issue and who do not have a current Health Plan.

Immunisations Immunisations will be occurring again for Years 7 and 10 on the following dates;

Friday 17th February

Friday 11th May

Friday 19th October as more information comes from Hunter Area Health this will be communicated with parents and caregivers. Uniforms Since our change over to the new uniform last year our Uniform Pool has dwindled. If you have any items that you are no longer using, a donation to this pool would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be delivered to the Administration office. Mosquitoes I have been reliably informed that mosquitoes can be fierce in the grounds of Newcastle High at this time of year. I would encourage students to apply repellent before coming to school so that you can protect yourself against them. Please contact me if you have any questions. I look forward to being a part of another successful year for the community of Newcastle High. (Ms) Shannon Sager Head Teacher Welfare

VACCINATIONS

Each year NSW Health offers the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school-based program.

In 2012 the following vaccines will be offered:

- Hepatitis B and Varicella (Chicken pox) vaccines will be offered in a catch-up program for all Year 7 students who have not previously received 3 doses of hepatitis B vaccine when they were a baby or had chicken pox disease.

- Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine will be offered to year 7 girls only as a 3-dose course over a six-month period.

- Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis (Whooping Cough) will be offered to all Year 7 and Year 10 students.

Parent Information Kits will be sent home to parents/guardians. To consent to the vaccination of their child, parents/guardians are advised to read all the information provided, complete the consent form and return it to their child‟s school.

Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the school Principal. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au.

Please note that for HPV vaccine only, parents/guardians must record their Medicare Number (all 10 digits and the 11th number beside the child‟s name) on the consent form, as this is required to record the student‟s health information on the National HPV Vaccination Register and link to the National or State Cervical Screening Program.

A „Record of Vaccination‟ will be given to each child and it is important they provide this to their General Practitioner to ensure that records are kept up to date. Parents/guardians should ensure that this record is kept for future reference and should not assume that their child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this record of vaccination. Many places of employment now require proof of vaccination prior to employment or work placement/experience, the record given to each child on completion of their vaccination is adequate for evidence of vaccination.

Please ensure your child has eaten breakfast the morning of the clinic.

HSIE DEPARTMENT 2012 is shaping up to be an exciting year for students studying HSIE subjects. Firstly, the HSIE department has new teachers on board. I would like to introduce myself, my name is Mr. Stephen Carey and I am the new HSIE Head Teacher. I have taught at a number of schools and have held various roles, my most recent being, Head Teacher Administration at Henry Kendall High School. I am very much looking forward to a productive future with the staff and students at Newcastle High School. Ms Erin McKay is also a new HSIE staff member for 2012. She is replacing Mr. Gavin Davies who is on leave. Ms McKay has already commented on the positive and cooperative nature of the students here at Newcastle HS. Students studying junior Geography and History will have the opportunity to develop geographical skills and learn how to use historical sources. Major investigations into the past and researching predictions of the planet‟s future are just some of the fun activities junior HSIE students can look forward to. Fieldwork is another area of study students enjoy. This is where they get to put the theory they have learned in class into practise in the great outdoors. Senior students studying HSIE subjects have again been offered an array of subjects. Students in Stage 6 this year are studying Business Studies, Geography, Ancient and Modern History, Society and Culture and Legal Studies. With such a variety of content and concepts being studied we are sure to produce well-rounded, knowledgeable students by the end of Year 12. Some highlights to look forward to throughout the year include, Legal Studies-Mock Trials, Commerce Student Businesses & Stock Exchange Game, Geography & History Excursions and Senior Study Days. I look forward to hearing about and witnessing the individual and group successes in all areas of Human Society in its Environment. Work hard and the rewards will follow. Have a great year. Mr. S Carey HT HSIE

ENGLISH FACULTY There have been a few changes to the English Faculty this year and I would like to welcome three new staff members: Mrs Suzanne Parrott, who has transferred from Francis Greenway High; Mr Ian Weston, from Tomaree High and Mr Christian Carswell, who will be replacing Mr Chris Edwards this year. If you have any questions regarding your child‟s course or assessment requirements, please go to the school‟s website (www.newcastle-h.schools.nsw.edu.au)or English Moodle page (you‟ll find a link on the website homepage) for further information. For new parents, if your child has not already, they will need to organise a Moodle login through Ms McNeilly in the English Faculty. Our Moodle pages allow students to access their course overview, assessment tasks, missed class work and interesting and helpful links to websites, articles and YouTube clips! Junior students (Yrs 7-10) should have received the faculty‟s book marking policy by now and pasted it into their books. We urge parents to read this policy and assist us in monitoring your child‟s work book. All students need a dedicated English work book that is labelled and covered. Unfortunately, notepads, ring binders or 5-subjects-in-1 notebooks are not acceptable and do not allow students to keep accurate notes needed for study, revision, marking and assessment. Our Stage 4 GATS classes: 7 Tyrrell, 7 Scott, 8 Red 1 and 8 Blue 1 are gearing up for a challenging and fun year! Every term each class will be undertaking a range of enrichment and extension tasks, including Literature Circles, creative writing workshops and independent investigations. If you would like further information on our GATS programs, please contact us or see your class teacher. A reminder to Year 11 that their $4.00 text fee is due - as Year 11 is not required to purchase their own texts, this small fee will cover all handouts, text booklets and resources issued. We will shortly be calling for Junior and Senior Debating Team members. Last years‟ teams were very successful in their competitions and we look forward to further successes this year. Interested students are asked to see Mrs Parrott in the English staffroom for details. Miss Melehan is in the process of organising another Newcastle High Newspaper Team to assist in the Newcastle Herald Newspaper Competition. Please check our website for last year‟s outstanding and professional entry! Mrs Oswald will continue to run her highly successful Public Speaking Team but is always looking for new, interested students to join. Listen out for her announcements on assembly or visit her in the English staffroom. If you have any queries regarding your child‟s progress in English, please feel free to contact us. We look forward to a busy and rewarding year! Ms Rachel McNeilly, HT English
