Disaster struck Bhopal on the dark night intervening 2nd and 3rd December 1984.
Thousands died, many were injured, many widowed, still more orphaned, many
permanently disabled. There was no limit to the devastation that had been caused. It was a
man-made disaster and every person who suffered was affected physically, psychologically
and socially. Both immediate and long-term post-disaster interventions were called for. As a
long-term intervention, one of the historic decisions of the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India
and the Government of India was to provide exceptional quality, free of cost medical care to
those affected. This decision resulted in the setting up of a well-equipped, excellently
staffed super specialty hospital, Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC)
that was established on 01st July, 2000.
With the compassionate care, excellent medical equipment, and high standards of
medical treatment BMHRC grew up to being a hospital par excellence, one of its kinds, not
only in Central India but in the world. The glory of the magnificent infrastructure and the
warmth of the ambience distinguish BMHRC from the rest of the hospitals in the country.
BMHRC focuses on specialization with perfection through a diligent team of professional
and highly qualified doctors. The efforts put in by each one is visible when a cured and
satisfied patient smiles.
A bio-psycho-social healing model is the call of the day and hence, the focus is on the
establishment of rehabilitative programs to improve the quality of life of the patients. From
the year 2000 (clinical services started on 1st July) till the current year lakhs of patients have
been treated at the main hospital and the eight health centres.
The patients are referred to the main hospital from the primary health centres for
superspeciality treatment. Primary health care needs are taken care of at the health centres.
These health centres are situated at various gas affected areas of Bhopal at Kainchi Chola,
Station Bajaria, Chandbad, Teela Jamalpura, Ginnori, Jahangirabad, Karond and Bal Vihar.
The Health Centres are well equipped to provide emergency care and preventive, curative,
restorative and rehabilitative treatment. These Centres provide basic investigations including
haematological and biochemical tests, along with plain X-rays and ECGs. Medicines are
dispensed at the health centres to both new and follow up patients. The health centres boast
of a team of specialists in internal medicine, ophthalmology, general physicians, pathology /
X-ray technicians, optometrists, pharmacists and nurses.
The main hospital is 350-bedded and houses 17 specialties and super specialties which
are Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Medical
Gastroenterology, Microbiology, Nephrology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology,
Pathology, Psychiatry, Pulmonary Medicine, Radiology, Research, Surgical
Gastroenterology, Transfusion Medicine and Urology to cater to the needs of the patients.
A state-of-the-art physiotherapy department in the hospital provides rehabilitation services
in terms of neuro-rehabilitation, cardiothoracic rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation and
intensive care physiotherapy to the patients. The main hospital also has a 24x7 emergency
department (casualty) with day care beds and facilities for basic emergency patient care.
