Lindsay Victoria Augustin McBride, recently appointed Chapter Treasurer, died unexpectedly at her home 28 August 1994. Lindsay was born 23 May 1860 in Oxford, the daughter of Carroll and Penelope Tiedjens Augustin. She is survLved by her husband, Michael Duane McBride, also a member of our Chapter & Assistant Trea- surer, her parents and two sisters. Although Lindsay was with us for too brief of a time period, she became part of our 'family' immediatelY vOlunteering when the need arouse, grasping and loving her new found hobby. Thank you Lindsay for having shared your talents and a part of your life with us. You will be sadly missed. Our condolences, thoughts and prayers are with you Mike. The family suggested memorial contributions be made to our Chapter. These funds will be placed in the Chapter's Trust Fund, unless otherwise specified, under Lindsay's name. Recently purchased Ohio books will have a memorial book- plate in Lindsay's memory. The State O.G.S. Convention, held in April, and the Chapter Management Seminar, held in August; these are two meetings that every member should take an opportunity to attend. These are places to make new friendships and develope better habits for research and absorbing more knowledge as to the working of genealogical societies. It is the end of my year as YOUR President. I have learned a great deal about genealogy and enjoyed the many opportunities of being a Chapter member. A trip to Western Reserve Library was very enlightening and overwhelming. Next was a trip to the Ohio Historical Society's Library what a vast library of city directories, newspapers, microfilm of death records, etc. BUT hearing personally from many of you and starting more correspondence was the highlight of my year. THANKYOU MEMBERSFOR YOUR SUPPORT. Ellen Moritz Kauffman, President FFOAC/CHAPTER DINNER The First Families of Ashland County and Chapter Dinner will be held at the American Legion, 1338 Claremont Ave., Ashland OH, 15 Nov 1994. Besides the common branches, book-keeping, horticulture, etc., were also taught. There were two terms in theschool year. The winter term was taught by a gentleman older and more experi-enced than the lady who taught the summer term. A few of the old scholars wereThomas, Gertrude and Nellie THORNBURG, Ned and Lois STARR, Andrew and WilliamTHOMAS, and Clara and Mary FREER. All were highly respected young people andare still held in high esteem by all who know them."

GILBERT MARTIEN

Among the pioneer citizens that have passed away during the past year no oneis worthier to be of cherished memory than the venerable Gilbert Martien whodied on the morning of Thursday, June 6th, 1872.., in the 80th year of his age.He was born in the city of Philadelphia, July 4th, 1798. The date and placeare the most celebrated in American history. While still a child he removedwith his father I s family to Frederick county, Maryland; and thence in 1818 toMt. Pleasant, Westmoreland county, Pa. His marriage occurred in 1831 and a fewyears later, in 1839, he united with the Baptist church. He moved with hisfamily to this state in 1858 settling first in Perry township, this county, where he continued to reside for about seven years, thence moving to a farm twomiles northeast of town. In 1868, on account of advancing age, he concluded tomake his home in town. He was the father of nine children, seven of whom arenow living. Though in poor health for years, he was not confined to his beduntil overtaken by his last sickness.

The deceased was a good man, of careful habits and kind heart, and a trueChristian. His bereaved friends and relatives might well be inconsolable, wereit not for the hope of meeting him in a better world.

The above was found in THE ASHLANDTIMES newspaper, 18 July 1878.

GREGGcontinued from page 54 - kept watch over his grave and affirm that sever-al attempts were made during the past week to rob the grave. To save thewatchers further labor, on Monday night the remains were disintered by hisfriends and removed to Mansfield where they were placed in a vault for the pre-sent.
