Prepare for Lent 2020: Are You Ready for Rice Bowl?

God invites us to reach out beyond ourselves and encounter the needs

of all. This Lent, CRS Rice Bowl—Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten faith-in-action pro-gram—invites us to reflect on the Gospel story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 with just a few loaves and fishes and to consider the needs of the hungry around the world. Journey with CRS to Honduras, Kenya and Vietnam to meet three girls and their fami-lies who are thriving with the support of CRS and faith communities like yours. Through stories, videos and lesson plans, your community will learn about the global issue of hunger and malnutrition and our Gospel call to feed the hungry. Join more than 14,000 faith communities in 180 dio-ceses across the U.S. in prayer, fasting and almsgiving this Lent. Together, we will serve our brothers and sisters most in need around the world while forming fami-lies and faith communities to be mission-ary disciples. To order your Rice Bowls, contact the office (see box).

Explore CST: Call to Family, Community, and Participation

“Local individuals and groups can make a real difference. We are able to instill a greater sense of responsibility, a strong sense of community, a readiness to pro-tect others, a spirit of creativity and a deep love for the land. . . . Social prob-lems must be ad-dressed by commu-nity networks and not simply by the sum of individual good deeds” (Pope Francis, On Care for Our Common Home [Laudato Si’], nos. 179, 219). People in every nation enhance the social dimension of their lives by acting as committed and responsible citizens: “responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obli-gation.” (Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gos-pel [Evangelii Gaudium], no. 220, quoting United States Conference of Catholic Bish-ops, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citi-zenship, no. 13). How we organize our so-ciety -- in economics and politics, in law and policy -- directly affects human dignity and the capacity of individuals to grow in community. The church teaches that every person has a right and a duty to participate in society, seeking together the common good and well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable. Challenge What are you doing in your family and community to encourage others to partici-pate, especially in the work to address the systems and structures that keep people in poverty? Look at the resources for Faithful Citizenship to learn more about what you can do to make a difference in your com-munity.

Responding to the 2020 Census is Critical for New Mexico’s Growth

The 2020 Census is fast approaching. It’s a count of everyone living in the United States and it’s important for you and your community to respond to ensure an accu-rate and complete count. Responding is easier than ever. For the first time, people will be able to respond to the census online on April 1. The census asks a few questions and takes a few minutes to re-spond.

What is the Census? The Census is re-quired by the U.S. Constitution and goes to extraordinary lengths to make sure every-one is counted once, only once, and in the right place. The census is conducted every 10 years and counts everyone who lives in your home, including children and new-born babies, citizens and non-citizens. Re-sponses to the 2020 Census shape how more than $675 billion in federal funding is distributed to states and local communi-ties. Census data determines how public funds are spent for new schools, healthcare, and fire and emergency ser-vices. An accurate count also determines how many seats your state received in Congress and data guides how state and local officials redraw boundaries for dis-tricts like congressional districts, state leg-islative districts, and school districts.

The Census and New Mexico Historically, New Mexico has been one of the most un-dercounted states in the nation. As a re-sult, the state has not been allocated the proper amount of funding, which could positively impact the state’s diverse popu-lation. As communities change, so do their needs. The Census paints a picture with numbers of the changing population of America and your response determines your community’s future. Shape your fu-ture, start here!

Be A Faithful Citizen: Stay Up-To-Date on the New Mexico Legislative Session Allen Sanchez, Director of the New Mexico Conference of Catholic Bishops, presents the concerns of the three Catholic Bishops of New Mexico at our New Mexico legisla-ture in Santa Fe. The purpose of the Con-

ference is to pro-mote the greater good of humankind by addressing issues

of moral concern and social justice as seen through the eyes of the Catholic faith. The Conference informs and educates its mem-bers and the public about those issues and encourages all to advocate for those issues and the betterment of humanity. This year is the 30-day session, beginning January 21 and ending February 20, and is limited to dealing with budgetary matters, bills on the “Governor’s call,’ and bills vetoed in previous sessions by the Governor. The 2020 Legislative agenda of the New Mexico Conference of Catholic Bishops is as fol-lows: Life, being the greatest gift from God, is top priority, as is concern for the poor. Listen to Archbishop’s Hour on Cath-olic radio daily or go to the Archdiocese of Santa Fe website for more legislative up-dates from Allen. Sign up to receive the latest information from the NM Confer-ence of Catholic Bishops and the 2020 leg-islative session by calling the Office (see box).

Civilize It What does it mean to love our neighbors in the midst of such a divisive climate? Catho-lics are called to bring the best of ourselves and our faith to the public square—and yet today, many shy away from such involve-ment because our national and local con-versations are filled with anger and harsh language, often directed at people them-selves. As Catholics, we must model a better way. We invite you to model love for neighbor by pledging to Civilize It and committing to civility, clarity, and compas-sion this election year. Civilize It: Dignity Beyond the Debate is a non-partisan call to focus on the dignity of all people, even those with whom we disagree, and to put faith in action. Make room in your heart for those with whom you disagree and pledge dignity beyond the debate today at Civi-lizeIt.org!

New Children’s Book about Racism:

Help Children Recognize the Value of Our Differences

The Department of Justice, Peace and Hu-man Development and Loyola Press have published a new children’s book—which is perfect for opening a conversation with children about the evil of racism. Addition-ally, you can find activity sheets to accom-pany this story of Ray Ikanga, a young boy whose family came to the United States as refugees. As Ray begins making new friends, his excitement is interrupted and the community is shocked when Ray’s fam-ily receives a hurtful message.

Order the book today! This and other resources are perfect for use by Catholic communities as we cele-brate Black History Month in Febru-ary. Open Wide Our Hearts, the U.S. Bish-ops' recent statement against racism re-leased in November 2018, and these re-sources and study guides can help Catho-lics learn more about how to work togeth-er to dismantle racism in our hearts, fami-lies, and communities. Additionally, our friends at Catholic Mobilizing Network cre-ated a helpful, short video with the Top 5 Lessons from the Pastoral Letter Against Racism. Quote of the Month from Pope Francis

“As we look around us, how many men and wom-en, young people and chil-

dren are suffering and in utter need! This is not part of God’s plan. How ur-gently Jesus calls us to die to our self-centeredness, our individualism and our pride! In this way… everyone can feel loved because [they are] understood, accepted and appreciated in his or her dignity. — Pope Francis, Homily in Antananarivo

Archbishop Wester Highlights the Role of Lay Ministers at Recent Convocation On the cold and beautiful Saturday of January 11, 2020, Archbishop Wester gathered with hundreds of lay ministers of the Church, deacons, and priests called in convoca-tion to reflect on and pray over Lay Ecclesial Ministry at Saint John XXIII parish in Al-buquerque. Following morning prayer presided by Archbishop Wester, participants listened to Archbishop’s keynote in which he highlighted the foundational sacrament of Baptism in all ministers’ lives. He reminded those present that every other sacra-ment, everything one does, everything that one is, is grounded on that day of Bap-tism. And, when “baptism assumes its rightful place in the lived experience of our

Catholicism, lay ministry will be seen as truly what it is, as important as it is, as critical as it is.” To that end, Archbishop Wester reminded those gathered that the first paragraph of the Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity states, “The apostolate of the laity derives from their Christian vocation and the Church can never be without it.” He went on to share that the Dogmatic Constitution Lumen Gentium and subsequent teachings of the Church state “the laity are called by God to the sanctification of the world from within, like leaven in the spirit of the Gospel by fulfilling their own particular duties.” This insight struck home to many of the attendees, who knew that their Church community had a need they can fulfill; but, had not stopped to reflect on the very fact that they had been called forth by God. Archbishop Wester went on to remind us that we each must exercise our baptismal call and that we cannot deny that call. We have both a right and a mandate to exercise our ministry. Addressing the inherent dignity of the Lay Ecclesial Minister, Archbishop offered “the Lay Ecclesial Minister is intimately one with Christ and is sharing that union with Christ. What we do is an expression of our intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. It is essential that ministers think about themselves not just in what they do, not just their functions; but who they are. Each of us is a unique, precious self that God has created. And that is the very self that God is asking you to give him and to the world and to the Church. That is your ministry!” Recognizing that serving as a lay minister can be challenging, Archbishop Wester encouraged the assembly with these words: “You are not alone. You are working with everybody. The whole Church together. It is a shared ministry. It is what God is doing in you and as a com-munity.” Archbishop concluded with his grateful blessing to those ministers before him and with the words of theologian Edward Hahnenberg. “To live one’s life as a response to God’s call is a pilgrimage. A shared journey of faith. Solidarity and transformation in the light of Christ. The marks of a very differ-ent kind of quest. The marks… of Lay Ecclesial Ministry.”
