What Happens at the AGM?Asanot-for-profitorganizationinCanada,theVictoriaFlyingClubholdstheAnnualGeneralMeetingtoprovideanopportunityfordiscussionanddecisionmakingamongclubmembers.Thediscussionwillincludeareviewofthepreviousyear'sresults,plansforthecurrentyear,andtheestablishmentoftheBoardofDirectorsfortheupcomingyear.TheBoardofDirectorsareselectedbyaprocessofelection.

How Can You Get Involved?TheBoardofDirectorsconsistsofagroupofVictoriaFlyingClubmemberswhousetheircollectiveknowledgeandskillstoconductclubbusinessonbehalfofallmembers.Theyaregovernedbyasetofby-lawsandmakedecisionsregardingaircraftandequipment,facilities,staffing,andvariousotherareasofclubbusiness.SustainingandLifeMembersareeligibletobenominatedforadirectorposition.

attheCanadaRevenueAgencyandtheRoyalBankofCanada.OriginallyfromQuebec,hespentmostofhislifeuntilhegraduatedfromConcordiaUniversitywithanEconomicsdegree.Afterwards,hemovedtoBC.Althoughheholdsadayjob,heisactivelybuildinguphishoursandconsideringthecockpitashisnextoffice.HisfavouriteplacetoflyisTsuniahLakeLodgeAirportwherehespendsafewdayseverysummer.
Jennifer ZadorozniakJenniferZadorozniakgrewupinSurreyandmovedtoVictoria13yearsago.ShegotintoflyingandstartedherflighttrainingattheVictoriaFlyingClubinJanuaryof2017.ShehasaPPLandisseaplane,mountain,andnightrated.Sheiscurrentlyworkingonhercommerciallicenceandhopestohavethisfinishedin2019.Whenshe'snotflying,sheworksfulltimeforIslandHealth,nowinhertenthyearasamentalhealththerapist.She'sreadyforanewchallengeandisworkingtowardsacareerflyingprofessionally.She'sinvolvedwithWomeninAviationInternational,theBCCoast99s,andCOPAFlight6.ShealsovolunteersfortheVictoriaHospitalsFoundationandintheelementaryschoolsystem.She'srunningforaVictoriaFlyingClubBoardpositionbecauseshewantstobemoreinvolvedwiththeclubwhileofferingafemaleandstudentperspective.

haditsbeginningsaroundtheVictoriaFlyingClub.In2018,wesharedafewstories:MikeandNormaSealeycelebratedtheir60thanniversaryattheCllub,andfittinglyso!NormaandMikemetattheClubin1957whenNormawasMike'sflyingstudent.Thenextyear,theygotmarried.MikeremainedaManageratVFCuntil1964whenhejoinedBCGovernmentAirasapilot.TheybothremaineddeeplyinvolvedinourlocalSidneycommunityovertheyears.
LastNovember,wealsosharedthestoryofJustineandJesseSeadswhogotengagedinOctober2018.JessehadarrangedaflightinaVFCClubplaneandproposedwhileflyingoveracarefullyarrangedpumpkinmessage.

Withthesuccessoflastyear’sinauguralcamp,NAVCANADAisannouncingthesecondeditionoftheExploreAviationSummerCampforteens.Lastsummer,30studentsattendedthefirsteditionofthecampanditwasanexperiencetheydescribedas“awesome”and“oneofthebestweeksofmylife”.
“For me the interesting part is that you get to see the layers of aviation. We would say ‘there’s the pilot, there’s the person in the tower’ but there’s so many people in between and there’s so many career opportunities. I feel that I can go anywhere,” explained camper Monica Muresan who attended the camp last year.

Withthewinterrainscomesexcessmoisture,mold,mildew,androt.Thisatmosphereiswonderfulforthevegetation,butnotsogoodforyourairplane.Yearafteryearyourplanemustdealwithsporesreachingintocracksandseams.Ifwedonotremoveandcleanitcompletelyyouwillseethere-growthorworse,itcanstarttodegradethestructureitison.
What to do and what to use?Letsbeginwithproducts.Toridyourairplaneofmoldyouwillwanttousesomethingthatwillkillmoldspores.Non-toxiccleanerslikehydrogen
peroxide,vinegar,andelbowgreasewillstartyouonagoodpathtoeradicatingthosespores.Productssimilartothosewecarry,(WingmanforthebiologicalmaterialontheexteriorandAdvantageforanybiologicalstainingfortheinterior)aregreatoptions.Whenlookingatanycleaningproductsensureyouwillnotdoanydamagetoyouraircraftwiththeiruseandthattheyarenotstaticcreating.
Moldandbiologicalmatterisbestremovedbyirritatingthespores,thenpenetratingthemwithacleaningsolution.Oncethisiscompleted,wipe,remove,andrepeattheprocessusingacleancloth.
Asyoumightsuspectsomeoftheareasyouwillwanttowork
onwillbeachallengetogetinto.Thisiswhereyoucanencouragesomecreativethinking.Iuseitemssuchassofttoothbrushes,Q-tips,toothpicks,paintbrushes,softplasticscrapers,bambooskewers,microfibers,cottoncloths,orbluepapertowels.Asyouproceedensureyoumaintaincleantools.
Cleaningawaymold,mildew,andmoistureshouldbedonesafely.Pleaseensureyouremembersomesafetyprecautions.Safetyprecautionsincludeensuringthereisappropriateventilation,gloves(toprotectyourhands),safetyglasses,andpossiblyamasktoprotectyourlungsfromairbornspores.

Iwouldliketointroduceyoutoaquiet,funny,compassionateandbravesoulwhoI’msohonouredtohavebeenpartneredwithfortheTourdeRock:my11yearoldJuniorRider,andcancerwarriorKaidenFinley.
InMay2017,Kaidenfoundouthehadabraintumourandbravelyendureda12-hoursurgerytoremovethetumourfollowedbysixweeksofhighdoseradiation.InMay2018,KaidenjoinedTourdeRockasaJuniorRider.Innotimeatall,Kaidenhadwonovernotjustmyheart,buttheheartsoftheentireTourdeRockteam.Whenaroutine3-monthMRIinSeptemberrevealedsixnewtumoursinhisneckandspine,Kaiden’sdoctorsconfirmedthattherewerenotreatmentoptionsavailableandKaidenwasconsideredpalliative.Nowasheandhisfamilyfacethisprognosiseachdaywithunbelievablestrengthandlove,Kaiden’sstorycontinues
toreachfurtherintothecommunityandhisteamofsupporterscontinuestogrow.Withtimebeinglimited,wehavesearchedforexperiencesforKaiden,wishestobefulfilled,anddreamstobemadeintorealities.TheVictoriaFlyingClubhelpeddojustthat.
OnDecember5,2018,Kaidenwasgiventhegiftofflight.HewasintroducedtoflyingandhadachancetotaketwoflightswithhisfabulousinstructorBrendaMcPhail.Kaiden’smomTasha,brotherBailey,great-grandmotherSylvia,andIallhadachancetosharetheexperienceaspassengerswithKaiden!
IaskedKaidenwhathewouldliketosayaboutflying.FirstthingwasTHANKYOU.Hehadsomuchfun.Hisfavouritepartwasprobablyturningtheplanewhileflyingbutoveralljustflyingtheplanewasthebest.

COPAFlight6,Vice-PresidentAllanRempelledthepresentationdiscussinghis1964Cessna210D,CGZTR.Allanchosethisplaneforitsversatilitywhenliftingofffromeitherpavementorgrass,shortorlongrunways.Theplanecruisesalongat145KTandhasausefulloadof1250pounds.CGZTRispoweredbyaContinentalI0-520engineandstalls
outat37KT.AfewquestionsrevolvedaroundwhatAllandidn'tlikeabouthischoiceofaircraft.AsAllanputit,"Ilikeeverythingaboutmychoiceofaircraftasyoucanloaditupwithpeopleandpayload,anditjustperforms."
NextupwasRobPriorwhofliesa1996RV-6,CFRBPor"Tweety"ashecallsit.Robstartedbuildinghisownaircraft,butsoonrealizedthisjustwasn'tgoingtobecompletedanytimesoon,sohedecidedtobuyanalreadybuiltairplane.HestartedlookingatRV-7salongwithRV-4s,butsettledontheRV-6,whichhelocatedinIdaho,USA.RobgrewuparoundaircraftandperformingaerobaticsandlikestheRV-6forit's"gentlemanly"aerobaticperformance.Tweetyispoweredbya150HPmotorandtheRVisoftenreferedtoastheclosestthingtoflyingaCanadianForcesTutorJet,justatadslower.Inclosing,Robdidn'twantacertifiedaircraftasyoudon'thavethesameflexibiltyinmaintaininganamateurbuiltairplane.
OurthirdpresenterwasTomVeseywhoispartownerofa1974C-172floatplane,CGEVE.TheplanesitsonEDO2000floatsandispoweredbya150HPLycoming.Adisadvantageofthisslightlyunderpoweredplaneisflyinghigh,hotandheavy.Tomfoundthebiggestlearningcurveistransitioningfromhardsurfacetowaterlandings.Ontheplusside,theplaneiseasytofly,inexpensivetomaintainandajoytoflyoverwaterat500feet,lowandslow.
OurlastpresenterwasJohnWattwithhis2017CessnaStationair206HD.AsJohnmentioned,"He'snotquitesurewhyheboughtthismonsterofanairplane."ThisbeautifulbirdispoweredbyaLycomingT10-540310HPandhasastaggeringburnrateof17gallonsperhourat75%power.The
aircraftholdssomeseriousfuelloadat87gallonsandhasanenduranceof6hours.Afterpurchasingtheaircraft,JohnfoundouttherewasanAD(airworthinessdirective)issuedthatrequiredanengineteardownevery50hours.AfterconsiderableconsultationbetweenthemanuafactureandAME,allissueshavebeenresolved.Inclosing,Johnnotedtheplaneisveryloudandverymuchappreciatesnoisecancellingheadsets.
