PRINCIPALS’ MESSAGE
Thank you, Patriots, for a great start to the 2014-2015 school year. The students have been very
busy learning and growing as readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and historians. The teachers
and staff members have been hard at work too preparing for the dynamic lessons taking place in our
classrooms. Our fabulous PTO and parents have been busy fundraising and planning awesome events
for the upcoming holidays. Parents, we know you have been busy too making sure your precious children
are prepared and ready each day. We appreciate all of you for your hard work and dedication!
We’ve had many awesome things taking place around our campus. We partnered with LPS to raise
over $8,000 for the Go Jim Go Campaign benefitting LeBonheur. Jim Jaggers was so impressed
with the amount we raised that he actually fell to the ground when we revealed the check! Our students
enjoyed shopping for their favorite books at the LES Book Fair. It was amazing to see our students
so excited about books! Also, we had a fantastic time during Homecoming week. The students did a
phenomenal job dressing up for spirit days! It was a great time celebrating being a Patriot with our
Lewisburg family!
We are very excited about the upcoming months and events at LES. Please be sure to pay close
attention to our school calendar for important events. Also, be sure to follow us on Twitter
@TweetDCS_LES, Instagram @les_patriots and check our school website for information. If you
need anything at all, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Patriot Pride,

THE PATRIOT PRESS
LES Staff got into the homecoming spirit by dressing up like Disney for the parade float!
Fourth grade Spotlight went to MSU to attend the “Wood Magic Science Fair” presented by the Extension Service. The
students also toured the campus and had an art lesson in the Art department!
GO JIM GO! Wow LES and LPS!!!! You did it! Together you raised
$8208.15 for Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital! We are so proud of the giving spirit of our students and their families. Congratulations! Let’s set a goal of $10,000
next year!
THIRD GRADE
The first nine weeks has gotten off to a great start. In math, we are multiplying
by 1, 2, 5, and 10. We are using equal groups, arrays, number lines, and repeated
addition to help us solve multiplication problems.
In Reading and Science we are studying about the ocean. We are enjoying
learning about the ocean and animals in the ocean. We are thrilled to be attending
“Dolphin Tale 2” at the theater. The movie will help us visualize creatures in the ocean
and the people that choose to help them.
Guess who won the contest to kiss a pig? That’s right! The fourth grade teachers! LES students voted that these
ladies would be the ones to kiss the pig at our “Go Jim Go!” event!
The 4th grade had a jump start to a great school year! All the 4th grade students would like to thank our teachers for the hard work they put into planning their lessons and making each of us a successful student. We have learned so much this first nine weeks. We discovered how the body systems work and how to multiply. In ELA, we are learning how to write a realistic fiction story with details and great character traits. We love having a mentor sentence each week to make our writing better. The 4th grade teachers have us very excited for the upcoming field trip aboard the Tunica Queen Riverboat. Being only a few weeks away, the students are psyched! This is going to be an amazing school year for the 4th grade!

Fifth Grade Academic News
In 5th Grade Language Arts class, we are currently reading Brian Selznick’s The Invention of Hugo
Cabret. It is a historical fiction novel that takes place in Paris during the 1930’s. An orphan named
Hugo who lives in a train stations and repairs the clocks must solve his father’s mystery. This book is
vivid and has a complex plot. It is a thrill ride and it’s sure to keep you entertained! It’s complete
with mysterious illustrations and will hook you like a fish!
So far this year we have been hanging out with Lewisburg’s #1 top scientist, Mrs. McKinnon. On one of
our first days we had a lot of fun with “Physics and Fred”. We had to save him from certain
death! Later this year we will be dissecting deer hearts! It sounds gross but I bet it will be fun. I
hope to be dissecting more organisms this 5th grade year.
Extra-curricular Fun
Homecoming week was awesome! We got to dress up during the week to celebrate and ended the week
with a cool parade! Some of our favorite dress-up days were camo day and wacky/tacky day! LES’s
float was spectacular with our teachers dressed as characters from Toy Story. If you didn’t come to
the homecoming game you might not know that WE WON!
Go Jim Go!
Go Jim Go was very energetic! We raised about $8,000 for LeBonheur’s Children’s
Hospital. Wow! That’s a lot of money. A student from LES and a student from LPS won a
bicycle. Our very own Preston Bright was the LES winner! Everybody was cheering “Go, Jim Go! Go,
Jim Go!” It was so fun – even Jim Jaggers screamed, “Oh my gosh!” The 4th grade teachers had to
kiss the pig. “Go, Jim, Go” is one of Lewisburg’s greatest traditions.
Move to Learn
Coach Calhoun is a very active man, and he helps kids all over the country become active. Move to
Learn does not only help kids become very fit, it helps kids have better brain power. Everyone was
laughing hysterically when Coach Calhoun came up with “cool comebacks”, like “My mama likes it”. We
had fun “moving to learn”.

Notes from the Nurse -
Tobacco Prevention Tips from American Family Children’s Hospital:
To help prevent your child from using tobacco, keep these guidelines in mind:
* Discuss it in a way that doesn't make children fear punishment or judgment.
* It's important to keep talking to children about the dangers of tobacco use over the years. Even the youngest child can understand that smoking is bad for the body.
* Ask what children find appealing — or unappealing — about smoking. Be a patient listener.
* Read, watch TV, and go to the movies with your child. Compare media images with what happens in reality.
* Encourage children to get involved in activities that prohibit smoking, such as sports.
* Show that you value your child’s opinions and ideas.
* Discuss ways to respond to peer pressure to smoke. Your child may feel confident simply saying "no." But also offer alternative responses such as "It will make my clothes and breath smell bad" or "I hate the way it makes me look."
* Emphasize what children do right rather than wrong. Self-confidence is a child's best protection against peer pressure.
* Encourage your child to walk away from friends who don't respect their reasons for not smoking.
* Explain how much smoking governs the daily life of children who start doing it. How do they afford the cigarettes? How do they have money to pay for other things they want? How does it affect their friendships?
* Establish firm rules that exclude smoking and chewing tobacco from your house and explain why: Smokers smell bad, look bad, and feel bad, and it's bad for everyone's health.

ART
This has been a fantastic first 9 weeks
for art! From creating beautiful masterpieces
to getting a new teacher we have been busy!
Third grade used a farm theme, drawing
a grandpa and grandson on the homestead,
and then creating a vegetable garden drawing.
Fourth grade drew a picture of the organs of
the body and also a picture of a cute owl
family. Fifth grade expressed themselves by
making Cornell boxes that told the story of
things they enjoy. Then they created a collage
based on Leonardo Di Vinci’s “The Last
Supper”.
So much wonderful art has come from
the Art room! I know next 9 weeks will be just
as amazing!

COMPUTER
Happy Fall, Patriots! We have been busy keyboarding in the computer lab this 9 weeks. All of the children should have received their Sumdog and Myon usernames and passwords! Sumdog is a great free website that allows the students to play fun games while practicing math facts.
Myon is a wonderful digital library that can be accessed anywhere there is internet access. We will continue working in our Edutyping program to gain keyboarding speed and accuracy. We will also begin discussing cyber safety this 9 weeks!
