The Grapevine The P&C Newsletter from Narrabeen North Public School Week 8, Term 4 Thursday, 1 December 2011 From the P&C President… Did I just blink and miss Term 4? It is amazing to think that we managed to squeeze so much activity into 10 weeks but we’re almost there. Our last major event for 2011 is a very special one – a farewell afternoon tea and formal ceremony for Miss Elaine Hartman, an amazing teacher who has spent 35 years teaching at our school! The assembly will be held on Tuesday, 6 December at 2pm (right after lunch) at the Amphitheatre, followed by a more informal afternoon tea where people will be invited to have a cup of tea and cake and take the opportunity to talk to Miss Hartman. We hope you can join us to celebrate such an amazing career. Thank you to all the people who joined in the fun at Miss Hartman’s Mufti Day. On another positive note I would like to congratulate Mr Luke Perrin on recently “tying the knot”. As this is our final correspondence for this year I would like to take the opportunity to summarise the year that was. Our school saw an exciting improvement and was brought up to date with the introduction of “online ordering” at the canteen. The system has proven to be a huge success and is liked by students, parents and staff. Thanks to Elise Andrews for her dedication in making this wonderful improvement a reality. Another exciting change to the school was the introduction of before school care. This is also proving to be very popular. Thanks to Geraldine Tattersall, Megan Catterall and Annie Street for making this a success. Our two major fundraisers for the year were the Walkathon and the Twilight Fair, this year we managed to raise in excess of $20,000. Thanks to Kath Skaarup and Karen McEwan for their efforts in co-ordinating the fair and Jacqui Grove for managing the Walkathon. Finally I would like to say thank you and well done to everyone who lent a hand in some way this year. I have been constant with my reminders that “many hands make light work” and I am very happy to say that plenty of parents recognised that this year. Your efforts were genuinely appreciated by the P&C, the teachers and the students. Have a merry Christmas and a wonderful summer break. Did I just blink and miss Term 4? It is amazing to think that we managed to squeeze so much activity into 10 weeks but we’re almost there. NBISC staff and clients, particularly in the evenings. Thank you to all who understood and assisted last week by parking elsewhere for the Wednesday dance concert. However, sadly, several NNPS families still expected to be able to park in the Centre and someone even moved the barriers that were erected across the road to limit parking to NBISC clients only. In future, it must be understood that for school events after 4pm parking WILL NOT be available in the Centre car park. It is private land, leased to the Centre who kindly allow us to use it for the morning drop-off and the afternoon pick-up. Also, it is not available to NNPS parents for long term parking during the day. Big sign helpers Now that the year is coming to its end, I would like to say a special thank you to two boys from 6W who have helped me every week in preparing the letters for the big school sign on Jacksons Road. These boys, Kaleb Bakker and Callum Waring have both demonstrated school spirit and dedication to duty in their efforts every week. They have been reliable and responsible and worked together as a very successful team. Thank you, Callum and Kaleb. P.S. Big thanks also to our team of wonderful mums who have actually put the sign up each week. Thank you to our Term 4 helpers, Kim, Sharon and Amanda.

Kaleb Callum Sentences of the week – guest classes KA and KW Last night we went to the final dance concert. My hat fell off at the start of the concert. I will tell you who my favourite person was. It was Miss White. Sarah Palangio KW Last night I danced to Batman and I dressed up as a penguin. We had lots of fun. Miss White was very proud of us. Meg Brown KW In summer I like going swimming in my pool and going to the beach. Mia Mackenzie KA Today we went to science and we pulled the broad-beans and I did science work “on” how to grow veggies. Nathan Barker KA Robert Blanchfield

Donohoe 3/4S; Caitlin Hickey 3T; Emily Berry 3T; John Caldwell 3T; Jye Taggart 3/4S; Mitchell Barber 3/4S; Harry Rawley 4B; Reece Lawson 4B; Gabi Van Dyk 4B; Joel Perrin 4B; Ondine Mirosch 4B; Ella Donohoe 6D; Dominic Breese 6D and Mitchell Donnelly 6D. Well done, everyone! Please note: Next week will be the final week for Principal Awards for 2011. All awards, Kindergarten to Year 6 will be handed out at the 1.50pm assembly on Tuesday afternoon. Awards are able to be earned right up to the last day of school and these awards will be presented in 2012. Thank you. A very busy time of the year! It is amazing how busy life becomes in a primary school as we get closer to the Christmas holidays. Normal class routines are often varied for major school events such as last week’s dance concerts and next week’s presentation assemblies. Nevertheless, it is a time when we as a school expect our students to successfully manage these variations with the minimal fuss, positive attitudes and excellent behaviour. It was a pleasure to welcome our 2011 parent and community helpers to our traditional thank you breakfast in the Domes on Wednesday morning. The whole school truly values the help that is provided in so many important ways. The education of a child is most successful when based on teamwork and cooperation between the school, the home and the community. Sincerely, thanks for all that you do. Be there to lend your support! Lennox Varney (1M) and his dad, Nash will be performing in the final of the Narrabeen Sands Busking Competition this Sunday afternoon from 4.30pm. Lennox has broken a record as the youngest busker at the Sands at only 7 years of age! So, come along and support one of our NNPS families by casting your vote in support of Lennox and Nash. Your vote might just help them win the event and remember, every vote counts! NNPS robotics success Well done to our 2 teams for competing in the First Lego League Tournament held last week at NSHS. The N.E.R.D.S. team (Narrabeen Expert Robotics Design Specialists) won the judges’ award for ‘Outstanding Teamwork’. Well done, we are so proud of you all! Thank you to Mrs Reid for managing this valuable learning opportunity and congratulations to all members of the Robo Group. NBISC car park issues I had a lengthy conversation this week with the management team from the NBISC where several parking issues were discussed. The Centre is looking at options to ensure that in 2012 parking is firstly available to

Well done to Ashley McEwan, Natasha Robertson-Hanning and Isabella Curtis from the Senior Band who have been accepted into the music extension class at Pittwater High School for next year. Well done to Charlotte Wood as well, who has been accepted into the music program at Mackellar Girls - we wish all of you good luck for next year. What an amazing turn out at the Band try out session for next year!! About 100 kids came to the Dome on Monday lunchtime eager to try one or more instruments. We are suggesting that current Year 1 kids start in the percussion group and then progress to learning a Band instrument in Year 3. Kids starting to learn in the older years tend to progress faster, so it was great to see a lot of current Year 4 and 5 kids there as well. It all bodes very well for the future of the Band and Music Program at our school. Thank you to the school community who bought raffle tickets, popcorn and drinks at the school concerts. We raised just over $2000 and will be in a position to buy new instruments, music stands and music over the holidays to ensure a good start to 2012. The aim is to buy a few new instruments each year, so that we gradually build up a supply of good instruments that we own. Fundraising money also goes towards subsidising the Beginner Tutorial Program, to allow kids to try an instrument for 2 terms without a huge outlay of funds. The Guitar group will be performing next Monday before Assembly, so come along and watch them and then the 2 Bands will be performing before the Presentation Days next week. Instruments will be due back immediately after the Presentation Day Assembly on Thursday, 8 December so that they can be serviced. Heidi Furber NNPS Band Committee
