The Grapevine The P&C Newsletter from Narrabeen North Public School Week 6, Term 4 Thursday, 17 November, 2011 From the P&C President… Ah yes, the sweet sound of music, dancing and very enthusiastic singing – it’s dance concert time again. This year will see the return of the sausage sizzle on the Tuesday night, evening performance. We will serve a sausage sizzle and drinks between 6.00-7.15pm. This has proven to be very popular in the past as it offers an easy dinner alternative for parents on a very busy night. We will need at least 6 people to lend a hand on the night to cook on the bbq and help serve. Please contact Emma Boughton on 0404 473 365 or [email protected] if you can lend a hand. This coming Monday, 21 November, the canteen has arranged “free taste testing” for our students. The children will be invited to taste some different flavoured yoghurt’s at recess time. The yoghurts are new on the menu and we are trying to encourage the kids to give them a go. So please be sure to mention this to your child and encourage them to have a taste. If this is successful the canteen will look at doing this more regularly in 2012. Please remember also to register online for quick, easy canteen ordering. Information regarding whooping cough can be found on the NSW Health website at http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/PublicHealth/Infectious/whoopingcough/index.asp Annual school report surveys – surveys close this Friday at 4.00pm It is time again for the writing of the 2011 Annual School Report (ASR). As part of the report, the school must report on three particular areas – a curriculum area, a management area and overall school satisfaction. This year we will be asking parents to complete Zoomerang surveys in the curriculum area of Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE), the management area of teaching and a satisfaction survey. The three surveys are now open at the following web addresses: PARENTS – Teaching http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22DJLMLS8UU/ PARENTS – PDHPE http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22DMEKYH6AS/ PARENTS – Satisfaction http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22DJ4JZGENN/ They will remain open until Friday, 18 November. I encourage all families to take a few minutes to complete the surveys. The school values your opinion and findings will be published in the 2011 ASR. Students and staff are also asked to complete surveys in the same three areas. Hard copies of the surveys are available from the school office for those families without internet access. As of Wednesday, 16 November there have been 21 parent responses to the satisfaction survey; 20 to the PDHPE survey and 19 to the teaching survey. Thank you and if you have not completed a survey yet we would welcome your input. Term accounts and payments Sincere thanks to all of those NNPS families who have made such an effort to settle their term accounts over the last week. I really do appreciate your support of our school and the wonderful programs we offer. I know the school office would love to see all other outstanding term accounts settled in the next week in preparation for the DET’s end of the 2011 financial year process. Thank you. A reminder that it will still be necessary for a ‘user pays’ policy in relation to events such as the school picnic day (15 Dec), Surf Education (12-14 Dec) and Y6 Milson Island camp (30 Nov-2 Dec). Visitors to our school It is a pleasure to welcome Mrs Sarah Lees to NNPS this week. Mrs Lees is an overseas trained teacher from the UK and is completing her accreditation to be a teacher in NSW. This week Mrs Lees is working with Mrs Williams and the delightful students of KW. We hope Mrs Lees has

As already promised Term 4 is a busy one and the other dates to remember are: - Friday, 25 November. The P&C will be holding a “mufti day” in honour of Miss Hartman. We will be asking for a gold coin donation on the day, all proceeds will go towards a very special gift and assembly which will be held on Tuesday, 6 December at 2pm in the Amphitheatre. After the presentation, everyone will be invited to continue the celebrations in an intimate afternoon tea around the Cola, with a piece of cake and an opportunity to talk with Miss Hartman. The final P&C meeting of the year will be held on Wednesday, 30 November at 7.30pm. As it is the final meeting for the year drinks and nibbles will be served, all welcome. Gay Rabaul

Well done, everyone! Whooping cough is about – please be on the alert There has been a recent increase of whooping cough (pertussis) amongst primary-school-aged children and a modest increase in high schools. Please let us know at school if your child is diagnosed with whooping cough so that we can advise others as soon as possible. Thank you. Coughing spreads the infection to others nearby. Whooping cough caught at school can spread to any younger brothers and sisters at home. Whooping cough can be especially dangerous for babies. Whooping cough starts like a cold and progresses to bouts of coughing that can last for many weeks. Older children may just have a cough that is persistent and is worse at night. The infection can occur even in fully-vaccinated children. Children with symptoms should see a GP. If your doctor diagnoses whooping cough, please let the school know and keep your child at home until they have taken 5 days of antibiotics. Keep coughing children away from babies.

Whooping cough vaccines give good protection against infection but immunity fades. If your school-aged child has younger siblings, it’s a good idea to check that they are up to date with their vaccines.

From the Desk of Miss Dickson A classroom is four walls with tomorrow inside! The Annual Narrabeen North Dance Extravaganza Forget ‘Dancing with the Stars’, you can soon enjoy the toe tapping performances of the sensational Narrabeen North students at our annual dance concert: ‘Network Narra Presents.... What’s on the box?’ If you have not yet secured your tickets to this incredible production may I suggest that you find a computer and go on- line now! Limited seating remains for the evening performance. I am sure all shows will soon be sold out! We appreciate the assistance with costuming as per the note sent out by your class teacher. Please ensure all costumes are ready to go by the end of this week. Effective Communicators Competition Well done to all the class finalists who have presented their very persuasive speeches over the last two weeks and thanks to Mr Miller, Principal of Narrabeen Sports High School for attending each assembly as an adjudicator of the speeches. The Effective Communicators for each grade will be announced on Presentation Day. Leadership Programs Our Yr 5 School Leader candidates have embraced their program and proved themselves to possess many great leadership skills including the ability to use their initiative, communicate, be organised, meet deadlines and make decisions. A record number of 32 students have not only completed the program but chosen to run for a position as prefect. If your child is one of these students they would have received a note last week. This Friday those students will go into ‘lock down’ to prepare a speech to present to the student body. The Prefect Election Assembly will be conducted in the amphitheatre beginning at 10.30am. It is anticipated the assembly will continue after recess and conclude by 12 noon so students can return to their classrooms to vote. The votes will then be tallied and in a meeting with all candidates, in week 7, the results will be shared. School Captains according to the preferences will be announced on Presentation Day. Talk to your child about whether or not they would like you to attend the assembly on Friday. Sometimes children love the support but sometimes it can make them more nervous. Please also help us by preparing your child for possible disappointment. There are 32 candidates and only 10 positions. Please reinforce our belief that all leadership positions are important and help the school function. Help them to be supportive of their friends and pleased for each other. It is often the quiet leader, not seeking the limelight, who is the backbone of a team and the one who makes a difference. Every child has been fabulous in completing the course and each child will

a happy and worthwhile time with us at NNPS. We also welcome Ms Jessica Forsythe to NNPS this week. Jessica is an ex-NNPS student currently completing Year 10 work experience with us. During the week she will spend time with Miss Hartman, Miss Town, Mrs Bolton and Mr Brown. Welcome back to NNPS, Jessica! Sentences of the Week – guest class: 6D As the talented tapping dancers waited in the darkened wings, the curtains opened to reveal an amazing, glittering backdrop, which stated Network Narra Presents “What’s on the Box?’ By Anneleise Perrin Luke Gallant filmed as Bob Jenkins interviewed numerous students of various ages to discover their TV habits and favourite shows. By Conor Hickey The garlic and chilli prawn pizza which I bought from the incredibly unique pizza parlour down the road, tasted like heaven in my mouth and I ate it all right away. By Maeve and Kate. Year 5 leadership program It has been a pleasure recently to spend some time individually with those Year 5 students completing the leadership program. A part of the program is that the candidates have to make an appointment for an interview with the school principal (and remember to come!) for a chat about their leadership aspirations and overall commitment to our school. I have been greatly impressed with the excellent candidates with whom I have already met and have been very proud of their dedication to our school and their shared desire to aspire and achieve. While chatting, I have learned so many interesting things about each student - things such as a student who spent time living and going to school in Bali; someone who loves to paint architecture; another who enjoys working with water colours; those who play musical instruments and lots more. Congratulations to all of our leadership candidates – you can all be very proud of your efforts! Congratulations, Mr Perrin!!! Finally, I would like to extend the school’s congratulations to Mr Perrin on the occasion of his marriage this weekend. We wish both him and Kylie all the very best for their future together and every happiness. All the best, Luke!

A fantastic time was had by all who came to the end of year treat at the Manly Waterworks. The kids all paid $20 and had lots of pizza, party food and exclusive use of the Waterworks for 2 hours. It was a perfect evening and although they all had lots of fun, they were also very well behaved - well done everyone, it was a great night. Congratulations to Kate McKay, Brody Skaarup and Zoe Oldham for being selected for NSSWE (Northern Sydney Symphonic Wind Ensemble) in 2012- we are very proud of you. Kate has been playing in it this year as well, and recently enjoyed a tour to the Southern Highlands with a side trip to Jamberoo. A Band and Music Program Information night will be held on Wednesday, 30 November from 6.30-7.30pm in Mrs Hamilton's room. This is mainly for parents whose children would like to start learning an instrument next year, but all are welcome to attend. Heidi Furber NNPS Band Committee

thus be invaluable and receive a role of some sort which I hope they will embrace. Parliament House On Tuesday I had the pleasure of accompanying our school captains, Nina and Conor, to a morning tea with Rob Stokes, Member of Pittwater, at Parliament House. We had a fabulous time and as always our leaders were wonderful representatives of our school. Milson Island Year 6 Camp The Year 6 Camp is fast approaching. Thank you to everyone for returning your permission notes and medical forms. Please ensure your final payment has been forwarded to the school as unfortunately unless you have made alternate arrangements with the office we must work under the: ‘No Pay, No Go’ system. If for some reason your child needs to arrive / depart the camp at special times it is up to you, the parent to contact Milson Island to make alternate arrangements re coordinating drop off and pick up times with their staff boats. Specific times, would enable for it to be planned a bit better. A staff boat comes across from a private wharf near the Deerrubin Reserve in Mooney Mooney at 7:20am, 8:20am and 9:20am. Departing Milson Island, they have a staff boat at 1pm, 4pm and 6:30pm. Contact details are: Milson Island Sport and Recreation Centre

Email: [email protected] Yr 6 Fundraising, ‘The Bizarre Bazaar’ On Friday, 9 December Yr 6 will be running their mini fete in order to leave the school with a gift to remember them by. Of course we will be running a trash and treasure stall so if you have any toys, books or ‘bric a brac’ in good condition please send it in to us (room next door to 6W). All funds raised from the bazaar will go to the funding of an inbuilt school BBQ. A huge thank you to Gary Coutts for offering his assistance to us in the construction of the barbie. Stage 3 Surf Education Program During week 10 we hope to see all our stage 3 students participating in the Surf Education Program at South Steyne. This program is designed to educate our students on surf safety, such vital skills considering where we live. Yes many of our children are very confident and often think they are invincible. This course aims at teaching them surf skills to assist in keeping them safe at the beach and of course is mixed with a little fun. Stay tuned for notes and further information as the term progresses. Yours in Education Carpe Diem Michelle Dickson Assistant Principal (Stage 3) Sports and Stage 3 Dance Coordinator

The Volunteer Reading Program

The Volunteer Reading Program is coming to an end for 2011 and I would like to thank a dedicated and wonderful group of people who have made a significant difference to the lives of some our children. This program, which has run successfully for many years, has supported 25 children from Years 1 to 6 during 2011. Each child has worked with a trained volunteer most days for approximately half an hour on an individual literacy program. Learning to read is such an essential skill and all the children have worked extremely hard and mostly with great enthusiasm. Our volunteers have also been able to support specialised reading programs run by Area Support Teachers. These teachers are always very impressed by the volunteers at NNPS. We are extremely lucky to have such strongly committed volunteers and I wish them much happiness over the Christmas period and look forward to working with them again in 2012.
