A Word From Our Pastor

Rev. Fred Hayes - Interim Pastor

This past Sunday the Search Team announced the name of

the candidate they are putting forward for the congregation to call to the be the next pastor of North Community Church. This is exciting, but it is not the final step of the process. The final step is a congregational vote at a meeting to take place on Sunday, November 11th. You will have a chance to meet the candidate and hear her preach. This is the last step of discernment in the call process.

I encourage you learn about the candidate. You invested the

Search Team with a profound responsibility. I believe that have

taken their mandate seriously and have put forth their best

recommendation. Be open to the process, engage, learn, pray

and decide.

-Rev. Fred

Dear Members and Friends,

Excitement at NCC is crackling in the air these days! With the formal approval of Council, the Search Team has recommended a candidate for us to meet, learn about, and worship with, on Candidate Weekend, Nov. 9, 10, and 11. Pastor Heidi Champagne. There will be two “Meet and Greets”: Friday evening 7 - 8:30, and Saturday lunchtime 12:30 - 2:30. On Sunday, Pastor Heidi will be preaching at the service. Watch for more from the Search Team about Pastor Heidi! Immediately after the service, Heidi will leave the Sanctuary, and members of NCC will vote on whether to call Pastor Heidi to be our settled minister. Both the Church Council and the Search Team look forward to your participation in these important events in the life of our church! What else is happening in November? Plenty! On November 4, we’ll be saying God Be With You, the origin of Goodbye, to Susan Driscoll who is moving to Florida with her husband, Dan. Come to Coffee Hour so you can chat with Susan and help give her a big send-off! On Sunday, November 18, we’re celebrating our church’s 280th year. Read the announcement in this newsletter for details about this Heritage Sunday, including an all-church brunch… Yum! As I look back on our whole Interim period, I feel grateful to Rev. Fred who has been with us 16 months, supporting our congregation as we worried, prayed, reflected, talked, and listened. And look what happened— we voted to become Open & Affirming, revitalized our Christian Education space, embarked on new Christian Education programs, and grew into a more cohesive congregation. Thank you, Fred! Sheila Lipson-Norton Moderator

Special Announcement From the Moderators Sent to the Congregation on October 28, 2018

After praying, talking, and listening, the Search Team has chosen a candidate for the position

of Settled Pastor at North Community Church! This morning, the Church Council officially

approved the Search Team's recommendation of Pastor Heidi Champagne to be the candidate

to become our settled pastor.

There will be a CANDIDATE WEEKEND, November 9,10,11, with opportunities for you to meet

and worship with Pastor Heidi, and a SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING, Sunday, November

11, immediately following the service, in the Sanctuary, where members will vote whether to

call Pastor Heidi Champagne as the Settled Pastor of North Community Church.

Heritage Sunday is November 18, 2018. We are celebrating 280 years of worship, first in the

“Chapel of Ease”, then in this building we now call North Community Church. Please mark this special date on your November calendar - the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Robert Jackman will be our special speaker. Bob Jackman earned chemistry degrees from Colby College and Wesleyan University, and taught chemistry at Scituate High School for over 20 years. He then transitioned to a national journalist covering the art and antiques market for over a decade before being diagnosed with cancer. After recovering he began teaching programs at the Marshfield senior center, and now, 15 years later, teaches at senior facilities across the upper South Shore. He is a familiar face to many of us who have been privileged to take a class from him. Following worship, a brunch organized by Megan Shipman, will be served at the Parish House. Chris DeOrsay will show pictures and talk about the 2010 restoration of the sanctuary. There also may be a few surprises! Hope to see YOU there!

Youth News

Steve Shipman -Youth Group Leader

The 2018-2019 Youth Group Session is off to an amazing start with an engaged, enthusiastic

and energetic group of young people. During the month of October, the youth participated in a Bullying Prevention workshop where they discussed the impact of bullying and learned strategies for defusing conflict. Special emphasis was given to cyber-bullying and the identification of techniques to minimize its impact and to seek adult guidance and support. Additionally, the group participated in a brain-storming activity to create the “Skittle Riddle” scavenger hunt in support of their participation in Trunk-or-Treat. In November, as part of the Be Fearless Be Kind program, the Youth Group will learn about “The World’s Largest Lesson”; an initiative started in 2015, when world leaders identified and agreed to 17 goals for a better world by 2030. These goals have the power to end poverty, fight inequality, and stop climate change. In support of the “zero hunger” goal, the Youth Group will help support November’s NCC Community Dinner.

As a reminder, all Youth Group meetings and activities are kept up to date on the NCC Calendar of Events at www.northcommunitychurch.org/calendar-of-events.html.

NOVEMBER EVENTS

Wednesday, November 7 Middle & Sr. High Youth Service Activity: 3:30pm to 6:30pm, in the

Parish Hall. The Youth Group will support the NCC Community

Dinner by setting, serving, and cleaning.

Sunday, November 18 Middle & Sr. High Youth meeting: 5pm to 7pm, in the Parish Hall.

Continue to discuss sustainability and identify areas of focus for

volunteerism in our community.

UPCOMING EVENTS

In December, as part of the Be Fearless Be Kind program, the Youth Group will learn about

“Design Thinking” as a way to generate goals and plans for acting on and engaging in communi-

ty involvement. Additionally, the Youth Group will go out into the community to compete in

“The Kindness Challenge”; an interactive way to engage with our community near the Holidays

in order to spread kindness and promote others to pay it forward.

W.O.W.

Andy Hoey - Widening Our Welcome

As you know, NCC voted in February to become an Open and Affirming church, and

our Welcoming Statement reads: “North Community is an Open and Affirming church. With God's grace, we welcome people of any gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, race, eth-nicity, faith background, physical and mental ability, marital, political, and socio-economic status. We invite all to join us in worship, friendship, and leadership. Who-ever you are and wherever you are on life's spiritual journey, you are welcome here.”

So now what? How do we ensure that this statement doesn’t just remain words on a page?

This is where the new Widening Our Welcome (WOW) Team comes in. The purpose of the WOW Team is to find ways to fully bring to life that Welcoming Statement. This may include organizing programs, arranging guest speakers, and reaching out to the community so that everyone knows we are indeed a church of “extravagant welcome.” In addition, the WOW team will assist the minister in facilitating the annual Widening Our Welcome Sunday service. The first WOW Sunday was a great success, with an interesting and engaging conversation between Rev. Fred and Ryan Chasey, a trans man from Brockton Interfaith Community.

The WOW Team will next meet after church on Sunday, December 9th in the Friendship Room. For more information, or to become involved, contact Andy Hoey at: [email protected] or call: 781-834-7847
