THE PEACE OFFERING

A Word From Pastor

Rev. Heidi Champagne

Dear Friends,

What a joy filled December! From our first Sunday together on Decem-

ber 2, to the baptism of baby Ben on December 16, to seeing so many of

your faces at my ordination, to a pageant that drew a standing ovation, to a

Christmas eve filled with candlelight and story and song and luminaries out

front… it has all been such a lovely way to get to know one another in

worship. Additionally, I have had an opportunity to meet face to face with

many of you through meetings and through visitation of some of our

homebound members. I look forward to continued opportunities to get to

know you, and invite you to email me ([email protected])

or to call the church to make an appointment. I am happy to visit with you

in your home or at the church at your convenience. As I continue to

connect names to faces, it would be so helpful if you would make an

ongoing effort to wear your name tags.

Do you find yourself wanting to stay in the hope, peace, joy and love of

Advent and the joyful mystery of Christmas just a bit longer? We will do

so in our worship lives as we stray a bit from the lectionary these next few

weeks and follow a more linear path of the time following the birth of Jesus. On December 30 we will look at the genealogy of Jesus. On January 6, we will celebrate the Epiphany, (the time that the magi are reported to have arrived at the stable marking the 12th day of Christmas), on January 13, we will mark the presentation of infant Jesus at the temple, and then jump ahead to his baptism as an adult. On January 20, we will see Jesus as a young radical teacher whose ideas are rejected in his home town, and on January 27, we will study the passage from Luke in which Jesus instructs his disciples in the art of fishing for men. It is my hope that this alternate route will enable us to get to know the story of the formation of Jesus’ ministry the way we are getting to know one another.

To aid us in becoming better acquainted with the stories of one another and of Jesus, I will be offering a 4 week Bible study series in two different forms. One, a daytime traditional style study, will take place on Thursdays: January, 10, 17, 24 and 31, from 1 PM to 2 PM in Gilmore Hall. The second, a less traditional evening study, involving beginner level yoga, will take place Thursdays: January 10,17, 24 and 31 from 7 PM-8:30 in the Parish House. Please know that any and all are welcome to attend either (or both!) of these studies. So that I can approximate attendance for materials, it would be helpful to have participants sign up in Gilmore Hall.

I look forward with eager anticipation to continuing to love into this beloved community!

Wishing you a blessed New Year, Pastor Heidi

Dear Church Family,

As I write this it’s not yet the new year, so I’m thinking about 2018 and all that our church accomplished (which was a great deal) and pondering what the future holds. I’d like to thank you ALL, because all of you have participated in some way. Whether it be through serving with a group, or alone on a task that you saw needed doing, or through coming to worship and giving a friendly greeting to someone else. All of these make you part of our church family. We have a lot to be thankful for, as a church and as individuals. Even in the rough patches of life, we can find something to be grateful for, not the least of which is our faith in God— God who is understood differently by each of us and who is larger than our comprehension. Wishing you continued faith, friends, and success in your endeavors in the coming year. Warmly, Sheila

OUR ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PAGEANT

A special thanks to Tammy Budd for all of her hard work with the Christmas

Pageant! We are so grateful for her time and leadership. The kids had a great time working together to present to our congregation. They did such a great job. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

Youth News Steve Shipman -Youth Group Leader

The Youth Group continue to have great participation and energy as we focus on our three

key themes; Empathy, Kindness, and Service. During the month of December, the Youth Group successfully completed the KINDNESS CHALLENGE!! Our Youth went out into the local community and performed random acts of kindness (e.g., paying for someone's coffee, handing out candy canes) and provided each random-act-of-kindness recipient with the following pre-printed note card.

The gracious and grateful public response to our Youth was amazing! We completed the Kindness Challenge by delivering coffee and bagels to the Marshfield Police Station. The Desk Officer greatly appreciated the donation and provided the Youth with a tour of the facilities. We finished the day with hot cocoa and a number of delicious snacks!

During the month of January, the Youth Group will begin planning for our end of year mission trip to Rutland, VT. Many more details to come. As a reminder, all youth group meetings and activities are kept up to date on the NCC Calendar of Events at www.northcommunitychurch.org/calendar-of-events.html.
