    Pink Pearls!

  • I remember, when I was a gymnast I

    had my little gymnastics journal where I used

    to write my little and big goals, kept the rec-

    ords of new elements I had learned, put the pic-

    tures of famous gymnasts and always wanted

    to be like them. Those little things kept me pas-

    sionate about gymnastics.

    When I became a coach, I always en-

    couraged my students to do the same and they

    had a lot of fun with their personal gymnastics

    journal.

    Following the tradition, we would like to

    ask you, Parents, to make a trip to the store

    and let your “pearl” pick her own journal that

    she can turn it into her gymnastics diary.

    There is no special instruction for keep-

    ing your pearl’s gymnastics journal, but you,

    Parents, are certainly welcome to give them

    some good ideas how to set the goals, be more

    creative, and become organized and disci-

    plined.

    Also we wanted to make additional an-

    nouncements.

    1. As Pink Pearl grow, we decided to award

    the Student of the month for two categories:

    Little Pearl & Pink Pearl. We truly enjoy

    rewarding our students for hard work!

    2. We have the list of the gymnastics skills

    that, we have been teaching, available at

    Pink Pearl. You are welcome to grab one to

    help your child to set the goal for the new

    skill and get the ribbon for it.

    3. You know how we always ask your kids to

    work at home on splits, bridge, Handstand,

    etc. We start new reward program -

    ”Special Pearl for the Treasure Box!”

    Our young gymnasts will receive the

    “Special Pearl” for the whole week of exer-

    cising at home. Feel free to get the special

    treasure box

    for your

    pearl.

    Vitamin D improves muscle

    function

    The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism reports the finding of researchers at Newcastle University in England of a positive effect for vitamin D supplementation on the muscle function of deficient adults.

    Twelve participants underwent magnetic

    resonance spectroscopy of a lower leg muscle before and after twelve weeks of vitamin D supplementation in order to evaluate phospho-

    creatine recovery kinetics as an assessment of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation.

    Researchers Akash Sinha and colleagues observed a reduction in phosphocreatine recov-

    ery half-time after treatment with vitamin D, which indicates an improvement in maximal oxidative phosphorylation. "The scans provided

    a unique window into what is really going on in the muscle as it works,” Dr Sinha explained. “Examining this small group of patients with

    vitamin D deficiency who experienced symp-toms of muscle fatigue, we found that those with very low vitamin D levels improved their

    muscle efficiency significantly when their vita-min D levels were improved."

    "We have proved for the first time a link between vitamin D and mitochondria function,”

    Dr Sinha announced. "Of the patients I see, around 60% are vitamin D deficient and most people living north of Manchester will struggle

    to process enough vitamin D from sunlight alone, partic-ularly during

    winter and spring. So a simple vita-

    min D tablet could help boost your

    energy levels – from within

    Take a Walk! The summer is a great time to stock up on the Vitamin D.

    When the sun's UV-B rays hit the

    skin, a reaction takes place that enables skin cells to manufacture vita-

    min D.

    If you're fair skinned, experts say

    going outside for 10 minutes in the

    midday sun—in shorts and a tank top

    with no sunscreen—will give you enough radiation to produce about

    10,000 international units of the vita-

    min. Dark-skinned individuals and the

    elderly also produce less vitamin D, and many folks don't get enough of the nu-

    trient from dietary sources like fatty

    fish and fortified milk.

    The government's dietary recom-

    mendations are 200 IUs a day up to age 50, 400 IUs to age 70, and 600 IUs

    over 70. But many experts believe that

    these recommendations are far too low

    to maintain healthful vitamin D levels.

    They advocate for supplementation in the winter of about 2,000 IUs per day

    and a dose of daily sunshine in the

    summer.

    The sunshine vitamin may protect

    against a host of diseases, including os-teoporosis, heart disease, and cancers

    of the breast, prostate, and colon.

    What's more, sunlight has other hidden

    benefits—like protecting against de-pression, insomnia, and an overactive

    immune system.

    Wi sdom History of Pink Pearls

    Natural pearls are extremely rare, as by definition, they must be formed without human intervention. Pink pearls are some of the most rare, and an understanding of the history of pink pearls, such as where they originate and why they are pink, will allow you to more fully appre-ciate them. Origin of Pink Pearls

    Almost all pearls sold today are cultured pearls, either freshwater or salt. Akoya and South Sea pearls, both saltwater varieties, can produce pink pearls naturally; however, freshwater pearls may be dyed pink after harvesting. The Caribbean Pink Pearl is an especially beautiful pink pearl, created by the queen conch. Only one marketable pink pearl is discovered among every hundred thousand shells, and the queen conch has become a threatened species. These pink pearls have a unique quality that produces "flames" when the pearl is examined under light.

    History of Pearl Hunting For thousands of years, pearl divers hunted for the elusive natural pearl in the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, the Persian Gulf, and the Gulf of Mannar. Most of the natural pearls available today are vintage and continue to demand the highest prices. Pearl divers gathered as many oysters as they could, which were then carefully searched for pearls. Usually slaves or of very low social class, pearl divers often died from drowning or other dangers of descending far be-low the ocean's surface on a single indrawn breath. A slave could sometimes "buy" his free-dom by finding an exceptionally large pearl.

    History of Pearl Farming Cultured pearl farming began about 100 years ago. Shelled mollusks produce pearls by cover-ing an irritant with layers of a substance called "nacre," which is also known as "mother of pearl." The tiny irritant is implanted in the animal's mantle folds, and harvesting takes place anywhere from 9 to 16 months for Akoya pearls, to 2 to 7 years for freshwater pearls. Cultured pearls increased in popularity after Coco Chanel began using them in her fashion designs in the 1930s.

    Caribbean Pink Pearl The queen conch is a very sensitive animal and every attempt to produce cultured Caribbean pink pearls has failed. Each year, between 2,000 and 3,000 Caribbean pink pearls are fished from around the coasts of Florida, the Bahamas, the Yucatan and the Antilles islands. Of these, only 15 to 20 percent are marketable for jewelry. These pearls are heavier and harder than all other pearls. The fact that the queen conch is endangered means that pearl fishing is highly regulated and the Caribbean pink pearl is likely to remain a very rare gem.

    Other Pink Pearls Akoya and South Sea pearls can be produced in many different colors, including pink, though they are not as deeply hued as the Caribbean pink pearl. Freshwater pearls take dye readily and are often dyed many different colors to suit public demand. Freshwater pearls are seldom round, as the implant used is tissue from a "donor," rather than a round piece of shell, which is used as the irritant in saltwater pearls. However, for this reason, freshwater pearls are much more durable.

    Why Is It So Hard to Let Go? The cheerful girl with bouncy golden curls was almost five. Waiting with her mother at the checkout stand, she saw

    them: a circle of glistening white pearls in a pink foil box. "Oh please, Mommy. Can I have them? Please, Mommy,

    please?" Quickly the mother checked the back of the little foil box and then looked back into the pleading blue eyes of her little girl's upturned face. "A dollar ninety-five. That's almost $2.00. If you really want them, I'll think of some extra

    chores for you, and in no time you can save enough money to buy them for yourself. Your birthday's only a week away

    and you might get another crisp dollar bill from Grandma."

    As soon as Jenny got home, she emptied her penny bank and counted out 17 pennies. After dinner, she did more than her share of chores and she went to the neighbor and asked Mrs. McJames if she could pick dandelions for

    ten cents. On her birthday, Grandma did give her another new dollar bill, and at last, she had enough money to buy the

    necklace. Jenny loved her pearls. They made her feel dressed up and grown up. She wore them everywhere... Sunday school, kindergarten, even to bed. The only time she took them off was when she went swimming or had a bubble bath.

    Mother said if they got wet, they might turn her neck green. Jenny had a very loving daddy and every night when she

    was ready for bed, he would stop whatever he was doing and come upstairs to read her a story. One night when he finished the story, he asked Jenny, "Do you love me?" "Oh yes, Daddy. You ! know that I love you."

    "Then give me your pearls." "Oh, Daddy, not my pearls. But you can have Princess, the white horse, from my collection.

    The one with the pink tail. Remember Daddy? The one you gave me. She's my favorite." "That's okay, Honey. Daddy

    loves you. Good night." And he brushed her cheek with kiss. About a week later, after the story time, Jenny's daddy asked again, "Do you love me?" "Daddy, you know I love you." "Oh Daddy, not my pearls. But you can have my baby doll.

    The brand new one I got for my birthday. She is so beautiful and you can have the yellow blanket that matches her

    sleeper. "That's okay. Sleep well. God bless you, little one. Daddy loves you" And as always, he brushed her cheek with a gentle kiss. A few nights later when her daddy came in, Jenny was sitting on her bed with her legs crossed Indian-

    style. As he came close, he noticed her chin was trembling and one silent tear rolled down her cheek. "What is it, Jen-

    ny? What's the matter?" Jenny didn't say anything, but lifted her little hand up to her daddy. And when she opened it,

    there was her little pearl necklace. With a little quiver, she finally said, "Here, Daddy. It's for you." With tears gathering in his own eyes, Jenny's kind daddy reached out with one hand to take the dime-store

    necklace, and with the other hand he reached into his pocket and pulled out a blue velvet case with a strand of genuine

    pearls and gave them to Jenny. He had them all the time. He was just waiting for her to give up the dime-store stuff so he could give her genuine treasure.

    So it is with our Heavenly Father. He is waiting for us to give up the cheap things in our lives so that He can

    give us beautiful treasure. Isn't God good? Sometimes it is so hard to see what is in the other hand, but do believe this one thing...God will never take away some-

    thing without giving you something better in its place.
