We found this photo glued to the back of a mounted picture in our archives. In the book “Postcard History Series - Greenport” by David S. Corwin and Gail F. Horton, there is a postcard of the same structure with the sign reading “The Griffing”. The caption informs us that this hotel, located on Front Street, Greenport,

was first The Griffing House, next Hotel Dennis, and then Greenport House pictured above.

The Railroad Museum of Long Island, located at 416 Griffing Avenue in River-head, is celebrating its 26th Anniversary with a two day festival on the museum grounds. SAFE BOATING COURSE STARTS WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 7The United States Power Squadrons will present “America’s Boating Course®” (ABC) starting 7pm at the Moose Lodge in Riverhead. ABC is approved by NY State and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and the U.S. Coast Guard. The 4 sessions (continues 9/14, 9/21 & 9/28) will cover boating law, safety equipment, safe boating practices, navigation, boating emergencies, personal watercraft, charts, GPS, trailering and much more. At-tendees will receive a 244 page America’s Boating Course manual, companion CD and after passing an exam, a completion certificate. Fullerton’s Long Island: “The Lure of the Land” Exhibit. A never-before-seen exhibition of over 70 large-sized historic photographs of turn-of-the-century Long Island from our legendary Hal B. Fullerton Collection in our Grand Staas Gallery. Also on display are vintage cameras (including glass-plate negative cam-eras) and other artifacts documenting the early history of photography. Curated by Neil Scholl and Peter Dicke. Exhibit will run to December 23, 2016.Exhibit: When the Broadbill Was King on Great South Bay. Broadbill highlights local families, maritime history, folk art, and bay ecology.
