Perhaps you’re seeking out a quiet spot for a sunsetmargarita where you can observe the passing boats inpeace as the setting sun eases into the horizon. Ormaybe you’re on the hunt for cool museums and neweducational opportunities for the family and kids. Per-haps you just need some flashy new sunglasses orsome down time with a long, relaxing massage. Point Loma, with its iconic peninsula finger dippinginto the Pacific, is home to a wealth of fabuloushomespun eateries, fine-dining establishments, ser-vices of every kind, food sources offering healthfulproducts and values, and sumptuous wine bars to capoff a relaxing evening together.

Liberty Station, once the site of the sprawling, ven-erable Naval Training Center, is fast becoming SanDiego’s hottest mecca for arts, entertainment, cul-ture, science and shopping, packing an extensivearray of shops, markets and restaurants all into a sin-gle community.

Nearby Shelter Island, with its incredible bay viewsand stunning downtown panoramas, boasts some ofthe finest and most beautiful waterside hotels andrestaurants in San Diego, along with cottage shopsoffering up cool maritime merchandise and knick-knacks.

Over at the Midway District, you’ll discover every-thing from mechanic needs to mouth-watering bar-beque offerings, cozy cafés with themes you won’tfind elsewhere in San Diego, sporting-goods andhome-improvement outlets and all forms of enter-tainment opportunities.

Old Town San Diego, considered the birthplace ofCalifornia with its roots tracing back to the first Euro-pean settlements on the West Coast, is packed withhistoric museums, artifacts, stunning Spanish archi-tecture and enough picturesque shops and restau-rants to keep you and the family busy all day.

One thing is clear: no matter what you’re lookingfor in each of these Peninsula areas or Old Town SanDiego, there are a host of merchants here who treatyou like a king or queen — whether its fixing thataching tooth, putting the finishing touches on yourtax return or helping you find just the right bouquetof flowers to say, “I’m thinking of you.”

But how in the world do you narrow your selec-tions with so much to choose from? Well, that’swhere The Peninsula Beacon can make things a littleeasier for you. Here, we present the latest edition ofthe 2012 Readers Choice Awards — the best-of-the-best in retail, restaurants and services for the Penin-sula area and Old Town San Diego.

The merchants in these bustling areas are dedicat-ed to winning your business — and more important-ly, to keeping it.

The awards served up in the following pages werechosen by our loyal readership, which we value sohighly. Some of the winners may already be yourfavorites. Others you might not be familiar with. Butnow you have the consensus of fellow readers to helpyou decide where to do your shopping, dining andtake your daily business.

Take a look inside, and keep watch for anotherround of Readers Choice Awards in retail and ser-vices in Ocean Beach this September!

Best Bay ViewBali HaiThere’s no escaping the Hawaiiantheme at this longtime San Diego fix-ture, it’s everywhere from the menuto the décor. Hawaiian nachos, macadamia nut chicken, haole hal-ibut and about a million more choic-es. The 50th state rules here byvirtue of its cuisine, and its tiny placeon the map be hanged. Meanwhile, the restaurant’s accouterments areever-changing in deference to tikiart, or Polynesian carvings of humanforms. And the fact that the buildingsits smack on the water onlyenhances the flow of things. Mahalo– and enjoy!

Bali Hai RestuarantThere’s no escaping the Hawaiian theme at this longtime San Diego fix-ture, it’s everywhere from the menu to the décor. Hawaiian nachos, macadamia nut chicken, haole halibut and about a million more choices. The 50th state rules here by virtue of its cuisine, and its tiny place on themap be hanged. Meanwhile, the restaurant’s accouterments are ever-changing in deference to tiki art, or Polynesian carvings of humanforms. And the fact that the building sits smack on the water onlyenhances the flow of things. Mahalo – and enjoy!

Best Pet Resort Purring ParrotOwners Maria and Patrick Brinsondecided to open up a place for felineand avian companions, because theynoticed that the level of service fordogs has grown, while cats and birdshave been left behind. For pet own-ers that may not want a sitter cominginto their home or may want theiranimal companions to have morethan one or two short visits a day. They felt they could not only offermore then what is currently availablebut also raise the level of care for catsand birds when staying away fromhome.

Red Sails InnThe Red Sails wine list includes three Merlots, which tellsyou something. Just as Merlot is the wine for any occa-sion, so too is the eatery’s talent for pleasing all the peo-ple all the time, whether it’s wine with dinner or coffeewith breakfast. While mom and dad are chowing downon crab benedict and omelettes, the little ones have amenu of their own, which includes the universal favorite, hot cakes. Red Sails is in its 55th year now, which meansit’s had time to get it all right – and it certainly has.
