The Pennant Term 1, Week 10

Assets Work

The In2Out project is in full swing and despite the inclement weather over the last week much progress has been made. The outdoor learning environment is starting to take shape and like the community, I am very much looking forward to seeing the finished version. We are expecting some large deliveries later this week through the Greycliffe Ave access point. When I have more information I will send out a notification to ensure everyone’s safety. General ly these deliveries will take place around 7:30am, however, I will keep you informed via the app. During the upcoming school holidays the remaining doors in the school will have their locks changed to ensure that each classroom is compliant with current guidelines. Once the locks are replaced these doors will be painted as this is going to take place on the weekend after Week 1of Term 2. The girl’s toilet (demountable) on the 3-6 site is going to receive a much needed refurbishment in the near future. The work has been scoped and once the contract has been awarded the work normally begins just after that.

P&C

Tonight is the monthly P&C meeting. It begins at 7:30pm in the school hall. The P&C is a great place to start to get involved with supporting your child’s education. The P&C help raise funds to support the school in providing a wide range of opportunities for all the students. Tonight Mr Ross Warren – Principal of Pennant Hills High School will also be attending to discuss Pennant Hills High School in more depth. Please feel free to come along.

ANZAC Day School Service – Thursday 11 April 2019 As ANZAC Day falls in the school holidays this year, Pennant Hills Public School will be conducting its commemorative service at school on Thursday 11 April. The service will take place under the COLA on the K-2 site starting at 10.45am. Parents and Carers are welcome to attend. Students may wish to bring to school a small bunch of flowers on Thursday 11 April to lay during the ceremony. These flowers will be made into class wreaths and transported after the service to Beecroft War Memorial Cenotaph.

Don’t forget every day to remind your children how special they are and how much you love them.

Kind regards, Mr Matt Pinchbeck Principal

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Music concert Congratulations to all of the students who attended music camp over the weekend and a big thank you to the teachers, tutors and parents who supported, engaged and worked with the students over the course of the camp. The concert on Sunday was simply amazing. It was very clear that the students had worked hard to improve their performances in such a short amount of time, a true credit to their commitment to continuous learning and a reflection of the dedication of the parents and tutors who led them through their journey. Thank you. Performance assembly Please feel welcome to attend the performance assembly this Wednesday in the school hall. The boys dance group, the Ramsay choir and the senior band will all be showcasing their talents. NAPLAN headphones If your child is in Year 3 or Year 5, please ensure they bring over-ear headphones to school by Monday 1 April. We will be conducting the NAPLAN practice text during week 10 and need to ensure that all Year 3 and Year 5 students have their own headphones to participate in NAPLAN online. Headphones will remain at the school until week 5 term 2. Earbud earphones such as those supplied with iPhones are not recommended. Please ensure that your child’s name and class are clearly labelled on their headphones. Practice Test

Week 10 and 11 this term. Students will be introduced to NAPLAN online, the platform and tools they will be using during

the tests in Term 2. The practice tests are designed for students to become comfortable operating the software and for

the school to become logistically familiar with the process.

NAPLAN online Testing Period: 14-24 May 2019

Tests to be administered in order

1. Writing test

2. Reading test

3. Conventions of language test

4. Numeracy test

Significant planning, research and trialling has been ongoing since 2012 to support the move to NAPLAN Online. Online testing creates new opportunities for teachers and students that are not possible with paper tests. Parent Café Parents and carers who have a language background other than English are invited to our parent café, which is run by Mrs Krivohlavy. The first Parent Café will be held on Tuesday 2 April in Bellthorn Cottage. We look forward to seeing you there! Mufti Day This Thursday is a mufti day with students bringing in donations of small toys for the school fete. Thank you to our families for contributing a small toy. Kind Regards Mrs Kate Wasson Deputy Principal

WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS DAY

Tuesday April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day 2019. To build awareness and understanding for students with Autism (including Aspergers), the “Amazing Things Happen” video may be shown in classes during the next week or two. Parents/carers are also encouraged to watch the video via this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JdCY-cdgkI or go to http://amazingthingshappen.tv/ to view the video in other languages. It is an entertaining and wonderfully positive and informative explanation about Autism, however if you are at all concerned that your child may be sensitive about the contents of the video, please don’t hesitate to contact their class teacher, or you can contact me via the school email address. If you are a parent/carer of a child “on the Spectrum” (with ASD, Autism or Aspergers), or if you’re simply interested in understanding more about a different way of thinking, you may also enjoy watching “Dad – a film about autism and fatherhood”. The film, produced by Autism Awareness Australia is free to watch online via this link: https://www.autismawareness.com.au/news-events/events-campaigns/dad-a-film-about-autism-and-fatherhood-online-now/ Students with Autism can have certain challenges at school, but they often also have particular talents which are worth uncovering and celebrating. I am a proud parent of a (now adult) child with ASD, and as a Learning and Support teacher have directly or indirectly supported many other students. I’ve learnt how important it is to seek support yourself when you need it and to have others to talk to who may experience similar challenges. I am happy to take names/contact details of parents who may be interested in making contact with other parents of students with Autism. If there is an interest, I will facilitate a meeting for those who may wish to create an informal support group outside school. Alternatively, the Autism Community Network meets regularly at Hornsby RSL (one day and/or one evening each month). For more information and resources please visit their website using the following link https://www.autismcommunity.org.au/ Mrs Carina McSweeney Learning and Support Teacher

P&C PRESIDENT

Music Camp

Well, what an awesome Music Camp 2019! A huge thank you to the band and strings committee members but especially Jen W, Otte H, Phil Y, Kate A, Sarah R, Sarah M, Mrs Griffith, Mrs Stevens, Miss O’Toole and Mrs Reid for organising such an amazing weekend. This also wouldn’t have been possible without our parent helpers, conductors, tutors and concert set up roadies, who all contributed to making it such a sensational camp and concert. A special mention needs to go out to all the partners and families left behind to run the homes and additional trips to sports etc. The camp was such a success because of all the planning, logistics, overnight and day helpers but none of them could do that, without your support at home, so thank you!

Most importantly, to our amazing and talented musicians, you super stars of the future should be so proud of yourselves for the way you behaved, the long hours of dedicated practice culminating into one of the best concerts we’ve seen! Awesome jobs students!! Even the Elanora staff commented on how well behaved and what great manners the PHPS students have! Not forgetting our CAPA Captains too who all did a wonderful job leading at camp and at the concert. Well done! This year we say goodbye to some long standing families who have given so much to the PHPS music program and music camps including Otte H & Rae S, Kevin & Deb A, Simon & Jacinda M; I hope I haven’t forgotten anyone. Thank you so much for all you have done for the camp and the music program over the years. You and your talented children will be missed next year. P&C Meeting tonight - Special Guest Ross Warren Ross Warren, the Principal of Pennant Hills High School, will be speaking at the P&C meeting tonight, Tuesday 2 April from 7.30pm in the school hall. Mufti Day Thursday 4 April – Toys We have our second Mufti Day this Thursday where we ask all students to come to school out-of-uniform and to donate a new small packaged toy on the day. These toys will be used in our Lucky Dip and as prizes on several of our stalls on fete day. Some suggestions include: pencils & rubbers, toy cars, bubbles, balls, marbles, mini puzzles, skipping ropes etc. Your child can simply bring this toy donation to school on Thursday and hand it to their class teacher on the day.
