The Tri-Cities is a showcase for all things autumn. From the changing of the leaves lining the Columbia River to the late-season harvest offerings of area farmers’ markets to the start of the ever-popular high school football games, we are truly lucky to live in an area so abun-dant in its seasonal offerings.

With fall comes a sense of winding down…we begin to say farewell to the plants and flow-ers we have championed through the hot summer. We start to think inward, and therefore, indoors.

Many of us get the urge to change up our décor, bringing in the rich colors of the season. We may turn towards baking as the fall months turn cooler.

Whatever our interests and moods this time of year, there is no doubt that autumn is one of the most beautiful times to enjoy the Mid-Columbia.

The yearly Parade of Homes is one event I count on to signal the start of the season. Taking place just after Labor Day, the Parade is a time to see the best new home trends and tour neighborhoods you may not otherwise find your-self in. You’ll see 25 new homes ranging from ranging 1,700 to 6,000 square feet in size.

This year’s Parade is September 8–9, 12, and 15–16. The popular Chefs on Parade event is September 13–14. This special night features area chefs at 13 of the homes preparing entrées and desserts in the homes’ kitchens. Only 800 tickets are available and it always sells out!

For more details on one of our favorite Parade homes, see the article on page eight. Here’s to a glorious Mid-Columbia fall!

Chances are, you or someone you love has been affected personally by diabetes. Globally, as of 2012, an estimated 346 million people have diabetes, 25.8 million of whom reside in the United States (that’s 8.3% of the US population).

Diabetes is a metabolic disease that inhibits the body’s ability to produce a healthy amount of insulin, resulting in high blood sugar levels. Although there are several types of diabetes, the most com-mon are Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 is typically diagnosed early on in life, as symptoms become prominent early since the body is unable to produce any insulin. Type 2, on the other hand, is diagnosed in both childhood and adulthood, as sometimes later in life the body is either not able to produce enough insulin, or the cells in the body ignore the insulin completely.

Diabetes not only creates an incredibly unavoidable health risk for those it inflicts, it also comes with a handful of inconveniences and

daily interruptions. From blood testing by needle pricks to insulin injections, diabetes is a disease that cannot be ignored. The need to carefully monitor food creates a constant disruption to daily routine. The cost of medical visits, supplies and medication also come with a hefty price tag. It is no surprise, then, that those who must live with diabetes endure more than just its physical toll.

CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities will be ‘Stepping Out’ to help raise aware-ness and make a positive impact and contribution to diabetes research. CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities and volunteers like you will be walk-ing at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 29th, at Howard Amon Park to raise funds for this important cause. To support the CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities team, please visit our ‘Step Out’ page at main.diabetes.org/goto/century21.com or contact Stacey Fisher, Director of Brand Marketing, at [email protected].

New to the Tri-Cities? We’re here to help! Relocating not only comes with the hassle of packing and unpacking, assembling furniture and changing addresses, it also brings about the chal-lenge of finding new practitioners and the inconvenience of being removed from your normal routine. The Perfect Move scoured the area and found a few trustworthy recommendations to aid in the integration process. You’ve been so caught up with the recent move, you’ve completely forgotten that six months have come and gone since your last cleaning and x-rays. Never fear, the Tri-Cities is home to many gentle dental professionals. dR. dennis paRk of Courtside Dental in Kennewick is rated amongst the top dentists in the state. Practicing in general and family dental, Dr. Park has been perfecting his practice since 1980. dR. maRtin BoudRo of Martin Boudro Family Dental is also highly recognized in the region for his phenomenal staff and ease of procedures. Patients praise him for his bedside manner and ease of appointments.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but who are we kidding? You probably don’t eat nearly enough of those Washington apples. Thankfully, the Columbia Basin is chock-full of physicians to help keep you feeling your best. In patient satisfaction sur-veys, dR. James Leedy of Kadlec Clinic in Richland scored amongst the highest for his attentiveness and accurate diagno-ses. A legendary doctor in the area, dR. HenRietta mayu-ga of Community Health Center in Pasco is known not only for her professionalism but also for her remarkably delightful staff. Both of these favorite local doctors regularly receive recognition from their patients for their ability to go above and beyond.

No one is going to judge you for being devastated that you left your favorite Thai hangout or sushi stop behind. Luckily, the Tri-Cities houses some of the best hidden gems that feature family recipes and your oh-so-missed favorites. indian paLace (formerly in Kenne-wick, but reopening in Richland soon) is not to be overlooked. This isn’t your generic strip mall Indian fare, Indian Palace offers a rare regional selection of some of the most tantalizing dishes you can imagine. And chances are, they have a few items you’ve never even heard of. tHai gaRden in Kennewick is hidden amongst an array of businesses like the diamond in the rough that it is. The humble exterior speaks nothing of the delectable dishes available inside. Not only are their dishes consistently cooked on point, their black tea alone is arguably worth a visit.

No widespread chain company need be mentioned here, but we know you’re sick of hanging out at that same coffee spot on your days off. Your days of Death Cab for Cutie soundtracks and the con-stant aroma of roasted beans are over, thanks to some favorite local hotspots. The Roxy in downtown Kennewick is a wine and music bar in the heart of the action. Discreetly tucked away on the sec-ond story of a corner building in Kennewick, tHe Roxy regularly features live acts and special events and always offers an inviting at-mosphere to chill out or meet new friends. tHe tRi-city couRt cLuB in Kennewick offers the crème de la crème of social scenes in the area. Not only is this fitness fortress a premier gym, tennis, aquatic and racquet center, the building offers numerous classes, kids’ programs, a water park (including water slide) and more.

How frustrating is it when you can’t find that brand of super salty, extra crispy kettle chips that you love? Chances are, one of our specialty stores carries everything you crave and more. If you’ve never had the privilege of shopping at a FRed meyeR, the Tri-Cities houses locations in both Richland and Kennewick. To those who are familiar with Freddy’s but haven’t been there in a while, we suggest you make an impromptu return. Fred Meyer features everything you need for your new home, plus hard-to-find brands and a huge array of organic and all-natural groceries. yoke’s FResH maRket, located in Pasco, Kennewick and West Richland, is a saving grace when it comes to a wide re-gional selection of harvested fare. For true locavores, Yoke’s is a great place to run through your shopping list with a guarantee of flavorful freshness.

he yearly Parade of Homes in the Tri-Citiesgives the area’s homebuilders a chance to show the public the pièce de résistance of their year’s work.

The Parade affords those who enjoy being looky-loos a chance to walk the halls of some of the area’s most beautiful homes, provid-ing an opportunity to see the latest in home trends and design.

CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities is proud to host the shiny new showcase home built by Envision Homes for this year’s Parade.

Situated in the Chapel Hill community in a thriving area of West Pasco with stunning panoramic views of the Tri-Cities, this 1,960 square foot rambler is one of Envision’s most sought-after floor plans.

This rambler is so popular because it fits the diverse needs of many homebuyers.

Larger families like it because it features four bedrooms and two and a half baths. Smaller families appreciate having room for an of-fice or guest bedroom. First-time homebuyers appreciate the high-quality craftsmanship with a reasonable purchase price. Homebuy-ers who are downsizing enjoy living on one level.

The home at 5320 Chapel Hill Boulevard boasts a large lot on a cul-de-sac with a focus on outdoor living. Imagine the entertaining possibilities with a 15x50 wood deck and covered patio off the back of your home. A three-car garage leaves you ample room to park, work, and store. A stucco exterior provides years of worry- and maintenance-free living.

The interior leaves nothing to be desired. You’ll see beautiful tile work throughout the home. You’ll notice how light and open the home feels with nine-foot ceilings. The master suite invites you to relax with a garden tub.

Cozy nights are a given with the fireplace as a centerpiece. Luxurious granite counters grace the kitchen and bathrooms and stainless steel appliances make you wonder why we ever thought Harvest Gold was an attractive color.

The Chapel Hill neighborhood is more than just another new development with cookie-cutter homes. Its proximity to the recre-ational activities the Columbia River offers is one of its big selling points. The neighborhood is also a short distance from the bound-ary schools and a stone’s throw from the newer Chiawana High School and a quick trip to Tri-Cities Prep, making the task of get-

ing you access to everyday errand destinations without a long trip. And jumping on the freeway for your workday commute is even easier with I-182 just minutes away.

It’s not just any builder who can showcase the kind of quality found in these homes. The owners of Envision pride themselves on being able to build “more home for less money.” They use a busi-ness plan they say is designed to streamline their services, allowing them to pass the best possible price on to the homebuyer.

The 2012 Parade of Homes is September 8–9, 12, and 15–16 from 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. each day. The Chefs on Parade event is September 13–14. A limited number of tickets are available for this event featuring local chefs preparing entrees and desserts at select Parade Homes.

Tickets are on sale at area SunMarts beginning September 3. If you aren’t able to visit this featured home during the Parade,

we invite you to stop by the model home Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00–4:00 p.m. at 5907 Thistledown Drive in Pasco.

Franklin Counties offer after-school care for a number of Tri-Cities elementary schools, and even offer van transportation for select schools. Children partake in activities that focus on five core areas: sport, fitness and recreation; education and career develop-ment; character and leadership develop-ment; the arts; and health and life skills.

Schedules and stipulations vary by school, but the program is available to students at the following locations: Captain Gray Kinder Club, Club Discovery Preschool, James McGee Elementary, Mark Twain El-ementary School, Maya Angelou Elementary School and Ruth Livingston Elementary.

ymcaThe YMCA of the Greater Tri-Cities in

Kennewick offers after-school programs to youth in the area, kindergarten through 5th grade. All of the childcare sites are licensed by the State of Washington. The after-school programs offer activities and educational interests such as arts, crafts and

humanities; character development; health, wellness and fitness; homework time; sports; and science and technology. The YMCA also offers field trips, team building and both in-door and outdoor activities. To make it even better, snacks are provided. The after-school program starts at school dismissal, including early releases, and runs until 6:00 p.m.

Lionell Singleton of the Tri-City Fever football team started an amazing after-school program, geared towards educa-tional mentoring and tutoring. Introduced last year, the program quadrupled in size in just two months’ time, and shows even more promise to expand this year. Kids are guided through their homework and tasks, and then are left to play as they please once their work is complete.

Although Singleton hopes to enhance the program and expand to additional schools in the area, the kids are currently gathering at Eastgate Elementary in Kennewick. –Meagan Hines

n the past month, Mark Watrous has played alongside some of rock’s most renowned and influential acts on four different continents. He

even found time to make yet another appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman. But even with his daily itinerary carrying him to opposite corners of the globe, Mark takes a moment to reflect upon his early days as an artist, and the town that he so fondly recalls as “home.”

If you’re a fan of late night TV, you’ve most likely seen Mark Watrous playing alongside up-and-coming alternative and indie acts and rock legends alike. Mark has made a career as a supporting musician to vari-ous artists in the industry; he is a high-demand asset lending vocal and instrumental assistance wherever he is needed. This year alone, Mark has toured with The Shins, Brendan Benson and Cory Chisel & The Wan-dering Sons, as well as recorded on a track with Eric Burdon of The Animals.

Growing up in the Orchard Hills neighborhood of Richland, Mark acknowledged his fate at an early age. “I remember being maybe two,” he recalls, “and hav-ing something called a ‘Magical Musical Thing’ which was pretty much just a portable color-coded keyboard that I took everywhere with me.” He was raised in a highly artistic household with his two parents (who still live in the same residence), his brother and foster siblings, which certainly aided Mark in his pursuit to make music.

A 1996 graduate of Richland High, Mark’s earliest claim to fame came with Gosling (formerly Loudermilk), a band he formed with friends in 1995. “I am still very proud of the music Davey [Ingersoll], Isaac [Carpenter], Shane [Middleton] and I created in Loudermilk and Gosling,” says Mark. In 2006, the group disbanded and ventured into new pursuits. Since, Mark has been asked to join Shudder To Think for their live album, played fiddle on a Tom Jones track, and filmed a video next to Ricky Skaggs. All of this is in addition to play-ing in nearly 21 countries and on television shows like Conan, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Late Night with Jimmy Fal-lon, and European based Later with Jools Holland.

Still, amidst his whirlwind schedule and maxed out passport pages, Mark tries to make it back to the Tri-Cities at least twice a year. “I miss being close to the water and the mountains,” he says, “I really miss the Northwest altogether. It's such a unique place.”

Page 16: The Perfect Move V5I3

Start your revamp by evaluating the site for all the plants that you find desirable that are already planted. Ask yourself if the bed is too

crowded or overgrown, then determine which of these actions of revamp you need to take.

The first step of garden reclamation is simply to try fertilizing, watering and treat-ing any bugs or diseases. Encouraging plants to grow with nutrients helps them look a lot better. Eliminating unwanted pests and diseases through spraying or changing the garden’s environment will get the plants out of defense mode (and they’ll grow better, too.)

The second way to revitalize the yard is to conduct a hard pruning on plants to en-courage rejuvenation or regrowth. For a lot of shrubs, a hard pruning is the equivalent of a spa day for us. Just as we thrive from being exfoliated and massaged, plants sometimes need to have dead, weakened or crossing branches thinned out to do their best. You can prune deciduous shrubs back to reduce their size, too. Deciduous summer flowering shrubs are best to re-juvenate in the late winter or early spring; for deciduous spring flowering shrubs, it is best to rejuvenate prune after they are finished flowering so as not to disrupt your flower show. Evergreens can be trimmed to reduce their size, but you should never prune to a point where there is no green foliage.

The third step is to transplant or relocate plants during the dormant season (late fall, winter, early spring) to fix the issue of them being overplanted or overgrown. Remem-

ber, only move plants that are easy for you or your friends to handle: it’s better for you and the plant. By relocating the plant, you will open space for the surrounding plants to grow or fill in and fill an empty spot with the moved plant.

This next action sounds a little cold, but you can remove plants. Remember, as the gardener reclaiming a flower bed, you should not be afraid of removing unwant-ed plants that are too big for the space, difficult to manage, junky, dead, dying or just not appealing to you. Keep the cool or unique ones, but if it’s a shrub from hell, just shovel prune it out!

The final step is to decide if you want to add new plants. If so, start by measuring the spaces available, note the light and wind exposures, and ask if your garden or yard is lacking year-round interest. Now is the time to add it if you need it. You can find plants to fit most places in shrubs or perennials. Evergreens are great for late fall to early spring color, then vary the bloom times through out spring, summer and late summer, and use plants that can give you a mixture of colors for the fall as a grand finale to the growing season. Remember to find out what is available for your spaces and exposure before getting set on a particular plant that may not work there. Then plant the new plants and water thoroughly. Newly-planted plants require more care than established plants when it comes to watering because their roots have not spread into your garden’s soil yet. Hopefully, these helpful tips will assist you in reclaiming that urban jungle!

whenever I ask my clients whether they want to lose weight or fat, the answer is always the same. They

want to lose fat! There are three steps to losing fat that must be followed in a very specific order.

The first and most important step in the process is nutrition. You need to know how many calories a day your body needs to use for energy. Take in either too much or too little, and your body will store the calories as fat. Knowing what percentage of calories come from protein, carbohy-drates, and fat is equally important.

The second step is weight training. Building lean muscle promotes overall health, develops strength and changes your body composition. The key compo-nent is training with enough intensity to stimulate muscle growth.

The third step would be to incorporate HIIT cardio into your weekly training program. (HIIT stands for "high intensity interval training" and means alternating periods of short, intense anaerobic exer-cise with less-intense recovery periods.) HIIT cardio is proven to oxidize more fat than other forms of cardio exercise.

No matter what city you visit, specialty baker-ies are all the rage. The Tri-Cities area is no exception. Out of the smattering of store-fronts offering deliciousness in a paper cup,

Cupcakes Bakery and Deli in Kennewick is the original of the bunch.

Owners Milly and James Boggan have been churning out unique confections from their shop on Clearwater in Kennewick for five years. Designer cakes, gluten- , dairy-, and sugar-free items, cookies, and their much-ballyhooed cupcakes keep them on the map.

Recently, Vicki Monteagudo of CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities asked Milly to create a cookie using ingredients to represent the agricultural bounty of the Mid-Colum-bia. Thus, the “Columbia Basin Harvest Cookie” was born.

Using wheat flour, oatmeal, cherries, apples, and sweetening the offering with white chocolate chips, CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities has been delighting custom-ers by providing the concoction at open houses and special events, and giving the cookies as thank-you gifts for customers.

Milly credits her success with the enjoyment she gets out of creating desserts. And with so many other goodies clamoring for your attention, why choose one of her gourmet cupcakes to spend your calories on?

Milly says they are fun, offer a variety of flavors, and offer less guilt than many other desserts at a reasonable cost.

There’s nothing like reconnecting with nature and sleeping beneath the stars riverside on a crisp, clear night. Setting up camp and dealing with the backbreaking (and back-aching) nuisances can easily dissuade us from this hal-

lowed pastime, however. Enter glamping.Glamping is the luxurious new way to camp in style. A combina-

tion of “glamorous” and “camping,” glamping allows campers (or glampers, more accurately) to retreat to the comforts of a refined sanctuary disguised as a typical tent. What appears to be a stan-dard tent houses a queen-sized bed, soft rugs, cozy comforters and darling décor.

Alexandria Nicole Cellars offers glamping at Destiny Ridge Vineyard about 30 minutes outside of Prosser, where you can spend the night under the stars and overlooking the Columbia

River. Stop by the tasting room on your way for a complimentary taste. Don’t forget to pick up a couple of bottles of your favor-ite varietals, which will perfectly compliment your signature s’mores kit—complimentary to all glampers.

Reservations should be made well in advance, as the glamping trend has become increasingly popular. An RV space is available, and standard tent sites and spaces can be reserved alongside glamping reservations. If you enjoy the wine and want to save a few bucks for added rations (i.e. more wine), join the wine club for a $20 discount! With a standard rate of only $150 a night, this outdoor adventure is one unique experience not to be missed.

Although 2012 dates are already sold out, 2013 dates will be available starting in the coming months. Check ancglamping.com regularly for the latest news and information on the area’s most glamorous retreat. –Meagan Hines

SHOP THE MALLFall fashion in 2012 is very black and white. Stylish, on-trend, runway inspired pieces are on the racks, ready to wear at Columbia Center mall. Columbia Center’s Patricia Bardin, Director of Marketing, rounded up the top trends for Fall 2012, and translated them via what’s in your mall and what will work for our area.

1 Apricot Lane 2 Tilly’s 3 MNG by Mango, jcp 4&5 Kardashian Kollection, Sears 6 Macy’s 7 Fuego 8 Sears 9 Apricot Lane 10 jcp 11 CK, Macy’s 12 Tilly’s 13&14 Tilly’s 15 Fuego 16&17 jcpPhotography by Lisa Monteagudo, MM3 Design Agency.

Buy a leather piece now! Think of full leather as too drama-tic? You will find many professional pieces to add to your of-fice wardrobe translating the trend with a thin leather trim on a contrasting fabric. Love the look, but not leather? Check out Tilly’s new leatherette chic biker jackets and mix with a more classic piece. Maybe a pair of Levi’s via the new jcp interactive Levi’s Denim Bar! Daring? Pick a glossy patent leather!

Tribal, exotic, big looks went down the Fall runways, but lets stick to looking like we live in the Tri-Cities. Translate it with a less than engulfing, fuzzy, warm vest, or sweater in the season’s tan, white, or cream. You’ll find this trend throughout the mall. Mix textures! Accessorize with bone look necklaces, and tortoise shell materials in various shapes.

Everything is black and white, and as you’ll see, red all over. Color blocking continues for fall, but in black and white. Think: black dress, white blazer. Black and white exotic print pants, black and white polka-dots, white pants with a black tuxedo stripe...and more. Black and white does not mean boring. Try a B&W polka-dot blouse with black skirt and textured lace shoes. Another big trend for fall: lace on booties, pumps, even over-the-knee boots. The big color to mix with the B&W pair is tan.

Peplum silhouettes, whether on a tailored top, skirt, or dress, are big; yet don’t let yourself think they’ll add volume to you. What the cut does add is an accentuated, feminine, hourglass shape. Check jcp, the I.N.C. line or Rachel by Rachel Roy collection at Macy’s, or in DownEast Basics.

Blood red is the true-hued color of the season. Red pants, like we found in Tilly’s, even at Eddie Bauer. Also in graphic prints, as we found in jcp’s MNG by Mango collection, or Apricot Lane.

Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal disease. When a person is diagnosed with Polio, it is com-mon for inflammation to occur in

the spine, making it challenging to make simple movements. Permanent flaccid paralysis, muscle weakness, and deformity are also common. There is no cure for Polio; however, vaccines that are effective in preventing this illness have been dis-covered. The strategy to eradicate Polio is therefore based on preventing infection by immunizing until transmission stops.

Stomp Out Polio was organized by the Columbia Center Rotary and took place at Howard Amon Park in Richland. A special guest, Rotary International President,

Kalyan Banerjee, came all the way from In-dia for an International Conference and to participate in the Stomp Out Polio event. He was genuinely impressed at how many Tri-Citians woke up early on a chilly Satur-day morning to show how much they cared about helping eliminate this disease.

CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities is an active member of the Rotary and was glad to be invited to participate in the race. Thanks to the generosity throughout the Tri-Cities, the event grossed over 10,000 dollars. CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities is proud to be a part of a community who cares so much about this cause and came together to show their support.
