Reimagining our legacy: from time future to time presentThe Performance Theatre is a rather unusual annual meeting of minds

in which a select group of CEOs and C-level executives meet with the world’s best and brightest thinkers, influencers and doers. At a time of global uncertainty and political stress, it provides a safe, 36-hour space for world leaders to learn,

reflect, discuss and think the unthinkable about future growth models that work with and not against nature, benefit the many as well as the few and maintain the dynamism of the immediate whilst delivering value over the

longer term. Above all, The Performance Theatre aims to inspire the leadership required to reinvent growth.

Since The Performance Theatre in Lisbon last year, lots of good things have happened. We see lots of progress. But if we take a step back, we also see a huge need to accelerate

how we develop business and society in harmony with nature. A need to advance our societies in ways that benefit the many, not only the few. And a need to find a model of economic

growth that will stand the test of time. A model of inclusive growth that is fit for the future.

In London we had the chance to truly step up our game and our ability to talk about these issues. We were active, we stepped into the future, explored different ideas and different

narratives, we wrote new scripts, and we considered our legacy. We embraced the essence of The Performance Theatre - our safe place to explore, to think, and to discover.

Now, as we return to our daily routines, let’s be a little different, more courageous, and more collaborative, for having spent this time together.

Thank you. We hope to see you again next year.

Rick Haythornthwaite Chairman, The Performance Theatre advisory board

Why didn’t I learn to treat everything like it was the last time? My greatest

regret was how much I believed in the future. Unfortunately the clock

is ticking, the hours are going by.

You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something,

build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.

I would love us to regain the optimism we once had that we can be inventive and innovative

and genuinely make the world a better place, instead of just managing its decline.

We would all be global citizens. There would be fluidity between sectors, geographies, professional

and personal, profit and purpose.

I think of a world where every child has an education, and every individual can turn this into a way to make a meaningful

livelihood for themselves. Where every human being has a purpose.

Imagine giving a voice to the voiceless, the wisdom of the crowd managing world affairs.

Think of a social revolution through technology and emerging new forms of democracy that have the power

to change the world.

If we unlocked the potential of women at the domestic, economic and government levels, that would

seismically change the world.

Imagine if people could walk the streets of any city in the world without fear of being kidnapped. Organised crime couldn’t buy, corrupt or threaten the institutions that are

supposed to protect us.

No one puts their child on a boat unless the water is safer than the land.

Mankind’s greatest achievements have come about by talking and its greatest failures

by not talking. Our greatest hopes could become reality in the future. With the technology at our

disposal, the possibilities are unbounded. All we need to do is make sure we keep talking.

Everyone believes that the main aim in life is to follow a plan. And that is why they forget

their dreams.

We have to figure out how to give people something meaningful to do every day, something that affords them dignity.

Page 32: The Performance Theatre 2016: Reimagining our legacy, from time future to time present

Could we imagine a future where the quality of life is much better, people may be less

productive but enjoy it more?

Imagine if we have achieved growth by allowing people to be contributors. Since everyone is a

changemaker and we know how to work together, problems don’t outrun the solutions.

Contributing brings us health, happiness and longevity.

I want to give the technology free to every country. It’s something I want to help spread across the world.

I hope we will have made the transformations we need without leaving a trail of destruction

and devastation behind us.

Optimism is a strategy for making a better future. Because unless you believe that

the future can be better, you’re unlikely to step up and take responsibility for doing so.

What about a future where we could say “this new –ism was born here in 2016”?
