Report on February Club trip to Wattle Flat by Fred Krebs.

The large flat open area at the Wattle Flat golf course, that is available to camp upon is

appreciated. There is plenty of room for caravans

and campervans, as well as the usual campers in

tents and swags. There is a good toilet block and

plenty of shade amongst the trees. The locals are

friendly and helpful and there is a trust box where

you can put your camping fees.

Sydney was experiencing some very hot weather

weeks before this trip. However the temperature

began to ease as the weekend drew near.

Robert and Lenore arrived before the weekend and

there was a rain storm Friday night. When I arrived

Saturday morning The weather was fine and I was keen to go exploring. I met Alan and Lillian, as

well as Robert and Lenore. A New club member Jonno was here with his Partner Also. Lyn

Maybury lives nearby and she came over to greet us as well. We

went for a walk looking for old diggings and Jonno brought his

detector for a swing. As it had been raining, I suggested we

could try some panning where creeks are mostly dry, so we

headed off to the northern common at Wattle flat, where we did

find some gullies with water for panning. Where we were you

could clearly see diggings. I don’t think we found much gold

though. None in fact! But it was a pleasant day. That evening

there was a bit of a wind and there was a fire ban in place. So

unfortunately there was no fire to sit around. The next day we

decided to check out Wallaby rocks. I hadn’t been there before

so I was keet to have a look. But first Robert and Lenore and I

went to Lyn’s place to help her herd some stray sheep off her

property and onto an adjoining paddock. Meanwhile

Alan and Llillian wanted to visit their family at Peel so

they left early. Jonno and his partner Also had to leave

before lunch. Our small group went to wallaby Rocks,

and the river was flowing. There were some people

camped there I saw some people fishing and a couple

swimming. If you didn’t have a 4WD you might have

some trouble driving down to the river. The steep rutted

track led onto dirt and river rocks.

Well. It centainly is a beautiful area. There are no

facilities here but you are very close to Sofala, After a

bit of exploring, Robert Lyn and myself decided to pan

for gold. This time we found some gold! All in all, good

camping and plenty of areas worth exploring.
