www.donalsonvillenews.com Page 10A Donalsonville News Thursday, April 22, 2021 Recent weather sure dampened my activities. But when it isn’t raining, there are some things that can be done. Storms with winds keep putting limbs all over the place. In the small garden space, I have Blue Lake snap beans, to- matoes, bell peppers, roost- er spur peppers and thorn- less blackberries. I had to take measures to protect those plants on cold nights, and from falling limbs. To- mato plants are waist high and already loaded with green tomatoes. Blackberry plants are loaded, too. Bell peppers are coming on with more than we can use at one time. So bell peppers will be frozen for later use, especially in meat loafs. Being our yard man keeps me busy as well. I managed to do some fishing in Lake Seminole. I haven’t caught a limit of anything, but have gotten a couple of messes of panfish, including warmouth perch. Warmouth perch are on the bed now. Warmouth bed much like bass, single beds here and there, with males tending the beds. I tried bass on topwater lures, but that wasn’t working. I decided to go to black plastic worms and that was the bait they wanted. Being a guy who practices catch and release into the grease, we have enjoyed a few bass fillets along with the panfish. In the woods, it’s been turkey or hog hunting. Lo- cal folks running hog dogs have pushed the hogs into the thickest, most swampy areas of the lands I have ac- cess to. I managed to catch three hogs in a trap, none seen to shoot. Turkey hunting hasn’t been going well. In four trips turkey hunting, I have only seen about four hens, five jakes and one mature gobbler. Only turkeys com- ing to my calling were the hens. Watching gobblers while calling, I noticed they had no interest. I never saw one strut or gobble. Even though the turkeys haven’t caused much excitement, I always enjoy everything I see and hear out in nature. Some people will say, “ere aren’t any pretty snakes”, but I like to see some of them, the non poisonous ones. Plenty of black snakes have been seen, along with one cot- tonmouth. Walk up on one of those and it will check out your jump. I’m looking forward to some sunny days to go turkey hunting a few more times. If the turkeys don’t commit, there’s always fish- ing that can be done. See you outdoors.
