SYNOPSIS

Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular show, The Pirates of Penzance, is a rollicking, delightfully funny tale of a band of soft-tempered pirates. Mistakenly apprenticed to a pirate (instead of a pilot) by his nursemaid Ruth at the age of eight, the handsome Frederic is now twenty-one and, though quite fond of the group of joyous and fun-loving pirates, chooses to abandon his profession and “lead a blameless life henceforth,” dedicating himself instead to their eradication. Shortly after leaving them, he encounters a gaggle of beautiful maidens (one of whom, Mabel, steals his heart) and their father, the eccentric Major-General. The whole group has a run-in with the pirates themselves before escaping on the false premise that the Major-General is an orphan -- a fact these tender-hearted pirates simply cannot help but take into account, given the fact that the majority of them are orphans themselves and “know what it’s like.” Just as Frederic is ready to lead a band of lily-livered policemen to take out the Pirate King and his men, a secret is uncovered that will change his fate forever, but, naturally, all comes out right in the end.

Director’s NoteIn preparation for a world beyond school, I feel it is vital that we encourage young men and women to possess ‘soft skills’ such as confidence, adaptability and communication skills. I would urge all parents to encourage their children to become involved with extra-curricular activities that help shape these all-important attributes. As a Trinitarian myself, I can remember at times feeling a bit like Frederic, who personifies the operetta’s subtitle, “the Slave of Duty.” It was in drama classes with Brendan Duhigg that we were encouraged to harness our creative spirit and explore our individuality. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with such rapturous, tenacious and talented young men and women as they develop those vital attributes.

Producer’s NoteGilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance is a musical experience which is an absolute sound track to lives of another time, when the world was able to innocently poke fun at itself. Shovel full after shovel full our Major General digs himself into a hole as this comic musical works its way through some very well-known songs which provide many ingenious twists of the plot!

We are also pleased to join with students from Meriden, PLC and Bethlehem College to create an ensemble cast that will not only provide us with many memorable moments, but will also build long lasting bonds.

My hope for this production of Pirates of Penzance is that it will introduce this story to a new generation of actors, musicians, production crew and audience, providing an opportunity for those who may have never been on a stage before or those who are yet to experience any of the musical’s memories. This type of combined Creative Arts experiences enhances learning, deepens understanding about self and others, and — as it should be — is mixed with copious amounts of fun!

Enjoy!
