INTRoTaBLETHE CHICAGOLAND AREA HAS BEEN THE HOME FOR MANY OF GOLF’S GREATEST INSTRUCTORS AND GREG BARESEL IS ANOTHER ONE ON THE RISE.

Baresel logs thousands of lessons each year while working with begin-ners to aspiring professionals. His knowledge of what it takes to prac-tice and compete effectively along with his ability to communicate in a variety of different manners is why players are intrigued with his teach-ing philosophy and knowledge of the game.

Baresel is known for his ability to analyze the player’s game to find their strengths and weaknesses and finding the best possible way to im-prove on these areas to reach the player’s goals. Measuring the play -ers progress through checkpoints and skill assessments verifies progress is being made and working toward the achievement of the goals agreed upon.

Baresel’s coaching philosophy starts with understanding the player’s goals and commitment level to im-provement. Once goals have been

agreed upon, an improvement plan and program will be put in place. Each session together is working towards the short term and long term goals set forth. Each player will have a detailed practice plan outlin-ing what is expected and how to improve each skill needed to reach their goals. Baresel understands and stresses that there is not one way to play the game and not one way to swing a club. Working with the player’s strengths and improving on weaknesses is what will lead to reaching their goals at an accel-erated rate. Baresel provides direct and immediate feedback and creates the proper balance between the golfer’s ability level and creating challenges for each player.

Greg Baresel is a PGA Class A Golf Professional and is a contributing writer for Golf Infuzion Magazine. He has appeared on WGV TV and numerous radio stations.

A MAP PROVIDES THE ROADS NEEDED TO NAVIGATE TO A PLANNED DESTINA-TION. IF THE MAP IS NOT FOLLOWED YOU CAN STILL REACH YOUR DESTINA-TION BUT IT MAY TAKE LONGER WITH SOME OBSTACLES ALONG THE WAY. FOLLOWING THE MAP AS PLANNED WITH THE ACCURATE AMOUNT OF STOPS ASSURES ARRIVAL AT THE PLANNED DESTINATION ON TIME.

Page 5: The Player's Handbook

GPSOften times we dream about the destination but we of ten don’t have a map to get there. The dif ference between dreams and goals is dreams can be more wishful thinking where goals are ob-jectives that are written down with complete meaning and focus.

A clear definition of written goals will make achievement pos-sible. The best athletes know where they are going and how they are going to get there step by step. By using checkpoints along the way to make sure they are on the proper route to their des-tination.

The first step to becoming a top player is to develop your direct map. Having a final destination or your “shoot for the moon” goal is your first step to developing your map. Your map is to be detailed to the specifics of what you want and be of high priority. It will put you into action and you must maintain focus until you have reached the end of the road. Your GPS is what you wish and want if you could achieve anything.

Your GPS will provide the motivation and enticement needed to direct your activity. To be successful you must pursue your goals persistently, regardless of what others may think. Never theless, you are challenging yourself and there is the risk of failure, the greatest risk you will face. The safe way is to not challenge yourself and take no risk. The player that risks nothing will get nothing in return.

“ “THE FIRST STEP TOBECOMING A TOP PLAYER IS TO DEVELOP YOUR DIRECT MAP

GoALNOW IS THE TIME TO SET YOUR ULTIMATE SHOOT FOR THE MOON GOAL. THIS IS YOUR UL-TIMATE DREAM THAT YOU WILL WORK TOWARDS EVERY DAY.

One step to overcoming challenges is by setting intermediate goals with checkpoints that are achievable to help move the player in the right di-rection. When you set the intermedi-ate goals you want to be exact with what you want and have the goals be something you can control as it relates to your performance. You can only control yourself and your ac-tions. Understand that there is only one winner in golf so if your goal is to win a tournament set bench marks that are realistic to achieving that goal. For example, an improved driv-ing performance, make more putts, or even putting yourself into a posi-tion to win.

When you put your mind to some-thing and you live, sleep and breathe your goal you can achieve anything. There is nothing more rewarding knowing you can do something that you thought was impossible. Follow-ing your map and achieving your intermediate goals will guarantee your success.

THINGS TO CONSIDERJust a couple things for you to think about

when setting goals...

YoUR GoALSWHAT IS YOUR “SHOOT FOR THE MOON” GOAL, YOUR ULTIMATE DREAM?

WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES YOU MAY FACE ALONG THE WAY?

WHO IS YOUR SUPPORT TEAM AND HOW CAN THEY HELP YOU TO REACH YOUR GOAL?

WHEN DO YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL BY?

WHAT PRICE ARE YOU WILLING TO DO TO REACH THIS GOAL?

HOW CAN YOU OVERCOME THESE CHALLENGES?

You must pursue your goals daily

Goals that are written down are more likely to be achieved them ones that are not

PLaNYOUR COMMITMENT TO THE PER-VIOUS PAGE IS YOUR START TO REACHING YOUR DESTINATION.

Ever ything that happens going for ward is a resul t of your ac -t ions taken to reach your goal . Under s tanding that you wi l l be faced wi th bumps in the road and disappointments as you navigate through your journey. How you handle th is chal lenges wi l l deter -mine your resul ts .

To e l iminate the ef fec t of these bumps the bes t p layer s es tab-l i sh chal lenges and intermediate goals that are real i s t i c to their current level of per formance. These intermediate goals are achievable but cont inue along the road to their u l t imate goal of reaching the top. Having a plan wi th checkpoints a long the way wi l l hold the player accountable and minimize dis t rac t ions .

When set t ing your intermediate goals i t i s impor tant to re late them to goals you can contro l

such as your per formance. Relat -ing these goals to your per sonal bes t ins tead of set t ing a goal of winning a tournament . In a typical PGA TOUR event there are 144 player s wi th only 1 winner. I f you set your goal to win and you come up shor t you may look at the event as a fa i lure. Ins tead set a goal of put t ing your sel f in a pos i t ion to win. This i s a goal that you can contro l by your per-formance.

The ultimate reward in spor ts or even in life is when you make it to the moon, but it is not as reward-ing as the price you paid to get there. Understanding that improv -ing on your personal best by set-ting goals along your destination will give you a great satisfaction that knowing anything is possible. Following a detailed map with goal setting stops along the way will guarantee your success.

SEEiNGTHERE IS MORE TO GOLF THEN THE GOLF SWING BUT WE OFTEN GET FIXED ON WORKING ON ONE ASPECT OF THE GAME.

Thinking i f we improve th is tech -n ique we wi l l f ind the secret to our success . In real i ty the game is about h i t t ing our targets . There i s a t ime to work on our technique and then there i s a t ime to focus on playing gol f .

Breaking the gol f season down into segments wi l l help you s tay focused on what i s needed to develop al l the ski l l s to achieve your goals . When looking at any other spor t there i s a pre -season, season, pos t - season and of f sea -son. Taking th is approach to your gol f game wi l l have you prepared to play your bes t . Dur ing the of f season months i s when you want to make the necessar y mechanic changes that wi l l take t ime to feel “natural .” Pre -season months are when you wi l l work on your gol f sk i l l s . Gol f sk i l l s inc lude hi t t ing your targets , working on your

shor t game, and get t ing out to p lay some gol f . The gol f season is when you want to p lay at your bes t and not worr y about having to make changes to your game. Making mechanical changes to your swing can be di f f i cu l t when you are in season playing com-pet i t ive ly. Pos t season months are when al l of the end of the season tournaments takes p lace. This i s a lso a great t ime to look back on the season you had to see what needs to take place in the com-ing of f season to make your game even bet ter.

BUILDING PATTERNSThe fas tes t way to learn a new motor sk i l l i s through repet i t ion. Repet i t ion pract i ce i s when you use the major i ty of your t ime and hi t bal l af ter bal l us ing the same c lub. Of ten t imes there are no targets involved and the only goal i s to repeat the same move. This type of pract i ce should only be used when you are developing a new movement pat tern.

Ever yone that i s learning a new motor sk i l l needs to ut i l ize th is

type of pract i ce . This should only be used when learning a new movement . Under s tanding when i t i s impor tant to move from bui ld -ing a pat tern to ski l l pract i ce i s when your t ra in ing wi l l t ransfer to compet i t ion.

SKILL DEVELOPMENTBui ld ing new pat terns in your gol f game is improvement to your de -velopment but i t i s equal ly impor-tant to recognize when to move to

ski l l development . Ski l l develop -ment i s the process of t ra in ing our selves to be prepared for compet i t ion. This type of t ra in -ing involves h i t t ing our targets and chal lenging our selves dur ing pract i ce t ime. A few guidel ines to fo l low when developing your ski l l s i s to take your t ime between shots , p ick out d i f ferent targets and going through a pre -shot rout ine, having a goal for each pract i ce sess ion, and swi tch c lubs af ter each shot . I t i s impor tant to have a regular pract i ce schedule that i s cons is tent wi th your avai l -able t ime. Focus should be always to improve and get bet ter at your weaknesses .
