It’s been another great year. As the club year comes to its end and we prepare for another, it’s always a good thing to reflect on what’s gone before, and contemplate what lies ahead. I’m continually amazed at how many great people we have in this club - all car enthusiasts for sure, but also enthusiasts about each other and the club. It IS a great club because of the hard-working and dedicated members who make it that way. None of it happens just by chance. I hesitate to mention names because someone always gets missed, and really, I should just mention everybody. Each one contributes in some way, even if it’s just showing up at a club meeting, an event, or contributing a classified to this magazine. It takes every tiny part working together to make up the entire rich tapestry. We marvel at the whole and can so easily miss the little bits. I’d like to acknowledge all those little contributions and thank those who gave. And I will mention Jeff and Ann Cox, Pat and Lynne Murphy and Graham Allum who have so often stood at the forefront of club events. Thanks fellas. As a club, we’ve pulled off some big events this year. The RACQ QHMC Rally, the popular Petrol Consumption Run and the Swap, as well as all our monthly rallies, plus hosting several other club events, like the Armstrong Siddeley and Taree club. Then there was the Lourdes Home visit and, as a club, we put in a strong showing at the David Hack Classic. The good heart of the club showed up in other ways too, when it was nominated from the members that we give $25k to the flood appeal, and very efficiently managed by Kevin McGrath and his team. Other highlights include Bob and Marion Chapman receiving their 25 year badges, and Brian Timms launching his historical Garages book. I hope he continues his tradition of recording our local history. Who else should do this but a local old car club? We’ve also made it easier to join the club, by reducing the membership fee (something we’d always planned as the bank account rose), and reducing the number of hoops prospective members had to jump through. This year we’ve welcomed new members: Peter Saines, Bill and Elizabeth Sheppard, Owen Russell, Roy Dagan, and Dave and Norelle Maurer. It’s been great to have them and appreciate their contributions. Graham Allum must also be pleased at the better roll-up of cars at our club meetings. After a little goading and

throwing down the Model A Ford Challenge, he’s been pleasantly surprised at the response - though I think he claims he’s still winning. Looking forward, I’ve always been a big believer that we, as a club, should be the go-to source for all things local-motoring-historical, therefore should have a comprehensive library (constantly growing) of not just mechanical books and manuals, but recorded local history (thanks Brian). This will be especially vital as the years roll by. We should also have a comprehensive workshop - which is constantly improving. We could also be looking at teaching and training younger members in the finer arts of classic car maintenance and restoration, as one day we may not just be a mere ‘old car club’ but a vital and valuable resource of motoring history and preservation. Is there a museum in our future? Anyway, I’ll leave it at that for now. Thanks again everyone. Looking forward to a new, brilliant year. Jeff Brown

WIND UP RALLY Sun 17th JulyThis event organised by the McKeiver family was very well attended. Brad took us on back roads to Nobby where our vehicles almost filled both sides of the main street.A number of new vehicles were in attendance. New members John and Noleen Parker drove their Morris Minor while Michael and Sue Wells brought their 48 Austin Truck. This vehicle has been restored for some time but doesn’t get much use as it’s fairly slow. Michael drove it straight from home to Nobby. Another very interesting vehicle was Stuart Cooper’s original 54 Vanguard utility. Vehicles like this one complete with surface rust always draw a lot of attention. There is a school of thought that suggests these types of vehicles should be preserved in their unrestored driveable condition rather than making them bright and shiny.
A number of place names on the rally sheet were deliberately spelt incorrectly and contestants had to spell them correctly as well as completing a walk-around observation test. A few general knowledge questions were included for good measure.
We also visited the Vintage museum and Nobby Forge run by Louise Kennedy and Ken Greisbach. Louise has a collection of clothing and household items from yesteryear while Ken is a blacksmith. The museum is located in the front section of the former Nobby bank. Even the strongroom was used for displays. In the backyard Ken has built a blacksmith’s shop and has his current restoration project, a Fordson ute, close by. Ken mainly works on wagon fittings but is happy to make items for old cars (phone 4696 3376).
There were five prizes and the results were read out after a two course meal at Rudd’s Pub.
RALLY ROUNDUP
Prizes were awarded to Michael & Sue Wells, Rob Drummond, Clyde & Maree Baker, Kristie and Pat & Lynne Murphy.
After lunch a number of us took an alternate journey home stopping at a new home built around five shipping containers on the way. The occupants invited us in for a tour and we were all surprised at the excellent workmanship and the overall finish of the house.
DINNER DANCE Sat 13th AugustWhen the idea for this function was put forward, lots of members indicated their intention to attend. The meal has been subsidised down to $15 for three courses which is excellent value. If you haven’t yet got your tickets please contact Trevor Hoffmann.
PETROL CONSUMPTION TEST 20/21 AugustGraham is keen for club members and outsiders to be involved. There will be a meal and film evening on the Saturday evening and the run will be on Sunday. There are some excellent trophies in a number of sections.

THE YEAR IN REVIEWWe have had some excellent attendances on many of the events held throughout the club year. I believe that we have also included plenty of variety with a combination of social and competition events.
We have included observation runs, timed events, a gymkhana, a poker run and a number of quiz style rallies.There has also been some input from a number of different club members. The Klein family, David Liffin, Bill and Del Fischer, Michael and Sue Wells, Jeff Brown, Jeff and Ann Cox, Graham Allum and the McKeiver family have all contributed towards rally organisation. We ended up organising three runs ourselves as well as the Historic Motor Council rallies.
The position of rally director is made much easier if other members make some contribution. Imagine if there was enough interest to have twelve different groups of people involved?

PETROL CONSUMPTION TEST 20/21 AugustThe petrol consumption test for 2011 is being held on August 21, with entertainment on the evening of August 20 to entice entrants from out of town.
Commencing around 5pm, we will be having pizza for tea on Saturday evening followed by a Bud Spencer/Terence Hill movie.
I would appreciate members bringing a plate for supper for this evening.
Sunday morning will start with a drivers briefing at 8am. BYO morning tea will be en route with a BBQ lunch at the club rooms, on completion of the course. Please bring something for sweets after the BBQ as well.
Each entrant will be given a certificate of performance as well as the chance to win class and outright prizes.
As usual the best and worst outright will be calculated on ton miles per gallon, however this year the classes will be capacity based rather the number of cylinders.
This means more prizes up for grabs.
So far entries have been slow, except for some from VVTE members. This group are really excited about this event and an eight person, two car team have even had t-shirts printed for the event!
They have so many that they have spare people who can be navigators for any of you who may need one and I am sure they would really appreciate a ride even if you don’t need a navigator. All members of this team are under 25!
Entries so far include five vintage, one 1930s and two 1960s vehicles.

Items discussed in the general meeting were:• The continued negotiation for a standard dating form.• Some problems with S plate vehicles using the toll roads after recent rate increases.• A reminder that if you are planning to re-register a car that hasn’t been registered for quite some time, go to the QHMC web site and read the Guide to Registering Old Cars. It will save you quite some angst.• The AHMF has their AGM in September so if you have any items for the National agenda they need to be sent in ASAP.• The QHMC Transport liaison people will be meeting with QT in August to discuss seat belt compliance among other things.• Some interesting stats from the SIVS discussion, There are about 11,000 pre-1960 vehicles registered, with about half on SIVS. However there are about 15,000 cars in the 1960 to 1970 era with less than half of those on SIVS. Seems many would rather have full rego and less restrictive use of their vehicles.
The AGM followed with usual difficulties in filling positions, indeed at one point it looked like both President and Vice President positions would remain vacant, with Treasurer held conditional on these first two being filled.After some tense moments all positions were eventually filled and the Council now has a few new faces and looks set to continue pushing QT.
It was quite a long night and I think Jeff would not have made it home before midnight.

Transparent 1939 Pontiac
This 1939 motor is a Pontiac Deluxe Six which has been covered in Plexiglas, developed just a few years earlier in 1933. General Motors and chemical company Rohm and Haas built the vehicle for $25,000 - an astronomical price during the 1930s. Billed as a vision of the future, it was made for the 1939-40 New York World’s Fair, where it became a sensation at General Motors’ ‘Highways and Horizons’ pavilion; and it continues to cause a stir today.
Just two were ever made and this model, which has a three-speed manual transmission, has clocked up just 86 miles in its lifetime.
Once their respective showcases had closed, both ‘Plexiglas Pontiacs,’ or ‘Ghost Cars’ as they were sometimes known, toured the nation’s dealerships. Following the dealership tour, it went on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. and was reportedly there until 1947.

Cars and bikes need to arrive at Queens Park by 10am. This is a static display. Judging begins at 11am and category winners will beannounced shortly after 2pm, just before the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers parade float awards.
Please do not spin wheels or unnecessarily tear up the grass in Queens Park.
Judges' decisions will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. The Carnival Classic Cars car show is a light-hearted event. Please keep to the spirit of the event and enjoy the day.

Hi David,It was early on a Saturday morning when old Charlie rang me full of excitement. He had apparently heard of the whereabouts of a vintage Rolls Royce on a banana farm up in the hills behind Mullumbimby, and he asked if I would like to go with him and see if we could find it. I didn’t need much prompting and away we all went full of expectation. We had done these trips many times before but the majority had ended in disappointment. He had been given a name so all we had to do was find the property. The trouble was nobody lived beside the main road to ask directions, and we had to often navigate some shocking goat tracks some 2 miles long up into the mountains to find any form of habitation. Occasionally I wondered whether I really wanted to see this car or if in fact it was even there. After a couple of hours of really scary rally driving we found our destination and the car was there!But it wasn’t exactly what we had expected to find. What we saw was utter heartbreak for any old car enthusiast. The car was a 1927 Rolls Royce Phantom 1 sedan and it had actually been driven to the property, with the sole purpose, we were told, to use the chassis to build a trailer to carry bananas on the farm. The front of the chassis had been cut off behind the front axle and this once beautiful queen of the road was sitting there on its sump in the dirt. But what was even worse, the bodywork had been burnt either accidently or deliberately to get it off the chassis. I remember we located the radiator miles away being used on another farm.The idea of making a banana trailer must have been abandoned because Charlie was able to buy the remains of the car, and I remember the fun we had towing it up and down his street trying to unseize the big motor. Realizing the enormous task and cost it would have been to restore the car it was sensibly passed on to another enthusiast.Ted Godfrey, Tamborine
A TREASURE TROVE OF AUTO ELECTRICAL PARTS
For many, many years Kev Baker of KB Classic Parts has been sourcing and supplying electrical parts for all kinds of vehicles of the older variety.
You may have seen his frequent stalls at Swap Meets in South-East Queensland, with queues of people patiently waiting to purchase their bits and pieces.
Kev is now nearing retirement and his large collection of electrical parts is up for sale. It is time to pass the baton on to some enthusiastic person with an interest in keeping those beautiful older models on the road and firing well. It would be such a shame to see these treasured and ‘hard to find’ parts lost to the scrap merchant.
The parts include Lucas, Prestolite, Bosch, Auto-Lite, Delco-Remy, Duciellier, Paris-Rhone, S.E.V., Butler’s and C.A.V.
Most are new/old stock, with some 2nd hand, and most are sorted and listed on computer disk and/or hard copy. Relevant reference books and information leaflets are also available.
The entire stock is going for $45,000 ono. Smaller job lots would be considered.

Hi all,After some deliberation and urging from family, I have decided not to re-apply for the position of Membership Officer this year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the previous and present committee members for their friendship and support during my time in this position. Especially those who kindly went out of their way to get me to and from meetings each month. Hi David,My lifetime hero has always been racing driver Sir Stirling Moss who today at a spritely 82 is still competing around the world in historic events in his newly acquired $1.7m 1961 Porsche RS 61 sports car.But it is only recently that I have learnt much about the American driver, author, car builder, engineer and war hero, John Fitch. I would recommend any of your club members who have access to the internet to look up the many websites on John Fitch and read about the amazing life of this man.
