Dear Women’s Funding Leaders, Partners and Allies,

welcome to New York!

It is our pleasure to welcome you to Brooklyn, New York, for Women’s Funding Network’s 2011 Annual Conference, The Power of Global Networks.

New York is a dynamic, bold and diverse community fi tting for a global conference of leaders in the women’s funding movement. New York isalso home to 28 members of Women’s Funding Network and is the largest city in the U.S. New York has a signifi cant impact on global commerce,fi nance, media, culture, art, fashion, research, education, and entertainment. As host of the United Nations Headquarters, it is also an important center for international affairs. Furthermore, the city’s 7,000 not-for-profi t organizations infl uence the local community as well as communitiesthroughout the world. Each of New York’s fi ve boroughs offers a unique cultural experience. Take some extra time to explore what The Bronx,Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island have to offer.

With that in mind, we hope you will take this opportunity to grow your personal and professional commitment to women and girls and build lasting partnerships. In collaboration with Women’s Funding Network, we have prepared an exciting program full of opportunities for you to engage with peer leaders, sisters and movement builders through interactive off-site explorations, informative workshops and stellar plenaries. Through funding from the Harold and Kayrita Anderson Family Foundation, Women’s Funding Network has made a 3-year commitment to build on the work pioneered by the original A Future. Not A Past. campaign in Georgia. In partnership with participating memberfunds and allied organizations, Women’s Funding Network is addressing and combating the sex traffi cking of girls across America. This information sharing and strategy session is by invitation only for AFNAP participating member funds and members interested in joining the effort.

BlACk wOMEN dONORS’ ACTION GROuP (Whitman)The Black Women Donors’ Action Group (BWDAG) is comprised of over 30 Black women leaders within the U.S. and the Diaspora who are mobilizing to increase the number of Black women at all levels of the economic spectrum who give to women’s funds and foundations. BWDAG is building tangible support for initiatives that benefi t Black women and girls.

This cohort is comprised of fi ve women’s funds working together to explore what inclusion looks like in the 21st century, as well as how to fully embrace inclusive practices throughout women’s philanthropy. At the end of the cohort each participating fund will have goals and a plan to advance inclusion within their fund.

Learn about research and case studies that demonstrate the breadth of opportunity for partnering with donors in a strategic, intentional and meaningful way. Subway directions: Exit the hotel and proceed down the walkway immediately to the left of the hotel (between Morton’s and the Marriott). Enter the Subway station on your right and purchase a Metro Card for $5.00 round trip. Take the F train toward Manhattan and exit at York Street (only one stop). Upon exiting the station, walk down Jay Street towards Front Street, make a left down Front Street, walk four blocks to Main Street, make a right on Main, walk one more block, and galapagos will be on your left-hand side at the corner of Main and Water.

CulTIvATING A lIFE-lONG HABIT OF GENEROSITY FOR wOMEN ANd GIRlS (Roebling) The habits of generosity are not simply acts performed. Being generous is spiritually charged and requires dedication and disciplined practices. Explore what it means to cultivate “the holy habit” of generosity for the full economic empowerment of

women and girls. Learn about rituals from across faiths and spiritual perspectives that promote gender-justice activism.

Facilitators: Lisa Anderson and Katharine Henderson, Auburn Theological Seminary.

THE 2012 PROJECT: A YEAR OF OPPORTuNITY FOR wOMEN. dON’T GET MAd. GET EquAl! (Whitman) Learn about The 2012 Project, a U.S.-based, non-partisan campaign to recruit accomplished women to run for legislative offices in a critical election year. The campaign educates and inspires potential candidates and connects them with resources to help them succeed.

Facilitators: Katherine Kleeman and Kelly Dittmar, Eagleton Institute of Politics, Center for American Women and Politics.

SAFETY, SECuRITY, SElF-dETERMINATION & lGBTI COMMuNITY ORGANIzING (Robinson) From anti-homosexual legislation in Uganda, to the shutdown of the ILGA-Asia conference in Indonesia, to teen suicides and school bullying in the U.S., violence against sexual and gender minorities is gaining visibility worldwide. Explore how to address safety and security in LGBTI communities and strengthen cross-movement collaboration.

Facilitators: Mai Kiang, Namita Chad, Miles Goff and Suzanne Pharr, Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice.

THE INFANT MORTAlITY CRISIS IN THE u.S. (Brooklyn Writers, South Tower) Are you living in a U.S. city experiencing disparities in infant mortality statistics that rival the poorest of developing nations? Join peers for a discussion about this crisis, the impact of racism and possible social change strategies to address it.

Facilitators: Elaine Maly, Women’s Fund of Greater Milwaukee and Lorraine Lathen, Jump at the Sun Consultants, LLC.

THE BIRTHdAY PROJECT: THE vAlENTINE FOuNdATION GIvES THE GIFT OF PHIlANTHROPY (Brooklyn Actors, South Tower) In celebration of her 50th birthday, the late Phoebe Valentine decided to give friends the experience of philanthropy by sharing the gift of grantmaking. This process is now known as “The Birthday Project.” In 2010 the trustees of The Valentine Foundation adapted this idea as a 25th Anniversary Project where 10 pairs of donors and mentors engaged in a yearlong grantmaking process. Learn about the success of this innovative project and find out how to access the online Birthday Project workbook.

BARBARA dOBkIN (Trustee, Dobkin Family Foundation) A pioneer in advocacy and funding for women’s advancement and leadership, Barbara Dobkin is founder of her family’s foundation and Founding Chair of Ma’yan, the Jewish Women’s Archive and the Hadassah Foundation. She currently serves as Chair of Dafna Israeli Fund and American Jewish World Service. A frequent national speaker on women’s philanthropy and leadership, Barbara co-initiated the ground-breaking Women Moving Millions Campaign. Thursday at 1:45 PM.

TIFFANY duFu (President, The White House Project) Tiffany Dufu is President of The White House Project, founded in 1998 to enhance the public perception of women as leaders and to fill our nation’s leadership pipeline with a richly diverse, critical mass of women. She previously served as Vice President at The White House Project and over the course of her 15-year career has raised nearly $20 million for non-profits, forging new partnerships, support and strategies. MAllIkA duTT (President and CEO, Breakthrough) Mallika Dutt has overseen Breakthrough’s evolution from a single campaign to an international organization and global leader in advancing human rights through cutting- edge multimedia and pop culture tools. SOkARI EkINE (Social Justice Activist and Blogger) Sokari Ekine is a Nigerian social justice activist and founder and principle author of the Pan African feminist blog, Black Looks. She is the editor of SMS Uprising, a collection of essays on the use of mobile phone technologies for social change that provide an analysis of the socio-economic, political and media contexts faced by activists in Africa today. JOHN EMERSON (Activist and Author, Social Design Notes Blog) John Emerson is an activist, graphic designer, writer and programmer who has designed websites, printed materials and motion graphics for leading media companies as well as local and international non-profits. His writing has been published in Communication Arts and PRINT, featured in Metropolis Magazine, HOW, and The Wall Street Journal. In 2002 he founded Social Design Notes, a blog of writings and clippings on design and activism. Thursday at 11:00 AM.

SARA GOuld (Atlantic Senior Fellow, Foundation Center) In her two-year fellowship at the Foundation Center, Sara Gould will undertake research and activities within the broader philanthropic community to increase focus on social justice philanthropy and advance thinking in areas such as leadership development. Sara was president & CEO of the Ms. Foundation for Women (2004-2011), pioneering initiatives such as the Collaborative Fund for Women’s Economic Development and the Katrina Women’s Response Fund. CHRISTINE GRuMM (President and CEO, Women’s Funding Network) Chris Grumm has shown dynamic leadership over the past 11 years and expanded the Network to encompass over 160 women’s funds worldwide that collectively give $65 million annually and possess over $535 million in collective working assets. She has inspired visionary partnerships between Women’s Funding Network and Women Moving Millions (WMM), the Clinton Global Initiative, La Pietra Coalition, and the Salzburg Global Seminar. STEPHANIE HANBuRY-BROwN (Managing Director & Founder, Golden Seeds) Stephanie Hanbury-Brown is Managing Director of Golden Seeds, which she founded in 2004. Previously she spent 20 years in financial services in Sydney, London and New York, mostly at JPMorgan. Stephanie has been a director of 11 boards during her career, including public companies, regulators, trade association and start-ups. She currently sits on the board of public company Foster Wheeler AG. Friday at 4:00 PM.

CAROl JENkINS (Founding President, Women’s Media Center) Carol Jenkins is an award-winning writer, producer, former television anchor and correspondent, and media consultant. She is the founding president and board member of The Women’s Media Center, the groundbreaking non-profit aimed at increasing coverage and participation of women in the media. Ms. Jenkins has won numerous awards including an Emmy, the 2009 North Star News Prize, and the 2008 Women’s Equality Award. Friday at 12:00 PM.

MuSIMBI kANYORO (Director of the Population and Reproductive Health Program, The David and Lucile Packard Foundation) Director since 2007, Musimbi Kanyoro leads a program that makes grants in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and globally to organizations dedicated to reproductive health and its integration with global health, the environment and development issues. Previously CEO of the World YWCA, she has won several awards and authored 10 books and more than 100 articles. Saturday at 11:45 AM.

JOSEPH kEEFE (President and Chief Executive Officer, Pax World Management LLC) Under Joseph Keefe’s leadership, Pax World has become a leading innovator and asset manager in the rapidly growing field of Sustainable Investing – the full integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into investment analysis and decision making. He was named one of the “100 Most Influential People in Business Ethics” by Ethisphere Magazine and serves as Co-Chair of the Carbon Coalition. Friday at 4:00 PM.

HElEN lAkEllY HuNT (Founder and President, The Sister Fund and Founding Chair of Women Moving Millions Campaign) Helen LaKelly Hunt is founder and president of The Sister Fund, a private women’s fund dedicated to the social, political, economic, and spiritual empowerment of women and girls. A women’s funding activist for over 25 years, Helen is an inductee in the National Women’s Hall of Fame and catalyzed the Women Moving Millions initiative along with her sister, Swanee Hunt. TONI lAlICH (Pianist) Toni Lalich is an Australian pianist who has accompanied students and profes-sional singers and instrumentalists in Melbourne, Victoria, for the past 18 years. Toni studied at the Franz Liszt Academy and the Victorian College of the Arts. She has recently worked as repetiteur with the premiere production of “Pecan Summer” by Deborah Cheetham, Australia’s first Indigenous Opera production. Friday at 12:00 PM.

JENSINE lARSEN (Founder, World Pulse) As a young journalist in Burma and the Amazon, Jensine Larsen discovered that some of the world’s most important stories are rarely mentioned in the mass media. FRANCINE lEFRAk (Founder, SAME SKY and CEO of Francine LeFrak Foundation) Francine LeFrak has captivated audiences with Tony award-winning Broadway productions and Emmy and Peabody Award-winning films hailed for putting a human face on important social issues. She founded SAME SKY in 2008, a trade-not-aid initiative that empowers HIV-positive women in Rwanda to become entrepreneurs and lead self-sustaining lives. dAwN OlIvER (The Women’s Foundation of Greater Kansas City) Dawn Oliver is the Executive Director at The Women’s Foundation of Greater Kansas City. She has more than 30 years of experience working with nonprofits in the community, including her previous role as the Director of Development for the ALS Association Keith Worthington Chapter and work in development for the KU Endowment Association and Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri.Thursday at 1:45 PM.

MICHElE OzuMBA (Chief Program Officer, Women’s Funding Network) In May, Michele Ozumba will be joining Women’s Funding Network as Chief Program Officer. For the past 10 years, Michele served as President and CEO of the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (G-CAPP). Previous experience includes serving as the Director of the Office of Adolescent Health at the Georgia Division of Public Health and 12 years as a lecturer in Urban Planning at the University of Nigeria. TOSHI REAGON (Singer, Songwriter and Guitarist) Described by Vibe magazine as “one helluva rock’n’roller-coaster ride,” Toshi Reagon is a one-woman celebration of all that’s dynamic, progressive and uplifting in American music. A versatile singer-songwriter-guitarist, Toshi has collaborated with top entertainment innovators for 30 years and moves audiences with her big-hearted approach to rock, blues, R&B, country, folk, spirituals and funk. NICOlE REGAlAdO (Network Relations Manager, Women’s Funding Network) Nicole Regalado is the Network Relations Manager for Women’s Funding Network. She is a 2010 American Express Fellow for “Building the Next Generation of Women Leaders in the Non-Profit Sector,” a cohort of the National Council for Research on Women. Her passions lie in the intersection between art and social justice with a special interest in Afrobeat music and post-colonial movements and Himalayan Buddhist Art and Architecture. AMANdA ROSE (Founder, Connect the Dots Foundation and Twestival) Amanda Rose founded Connect the Dots Foundation in 2009 to craft fresh global campaigns and initiatives that use technology to connect people offline for a good cause. She is also the founder and architect of Twestival, an international volunteer effort to use social media like Twitter to raise money for important causes, such as health and education. TuTI B. SCOTT (President and Founder, Imagine Philanthropy) Tuti Scott serves as President and Founder of Imagine Philanthropy where she offers strategic counsel to organizations and their leadership. Elizabeth has worked with women’s funds as a consultant, facilitator, trainer and executive coach and with leaders and teams in the broader social sector to extend their reach and infl uence, igniting creativity and innovation due to her many years as a professional musician, conductor and producer. dONNA SIMS wIlSON (Executive Vice President, CastleOak Securities, L.P.)Donna Sims Wilson is Executive Vice President of CastleOak Securities, L.P., a leading New York-based boutique investment bank. BECkY SYkES (Executive Director, Dallas Women’s Foundation) Becky Sykes has served as the President & CEO of the Dallas Women’s Foundation since 1999, now one of the largest women’s foundations in the network. The foundation grants out more than $2 million annually to local programs that benefi t women and girls. Becky was the founding chair of the foundation and her many recognitions include the Athena Award from the Dallas Regional Chamber.Friday at 9:15 AM.

lAuRIE TAYlOR (Performer, Urban Bush Women)Laurie Taylor is a New York based dancer/choreographer who has performed in a variety of repertory and choreographic projects by master artists such as Jawole Willa Jo Zollar of Urban Bush Women, a group that seeks to bring the untold and under-told histories and stories of disenfranchised people to light through dance.
