You know your children better than anyone else!

Some Children have a fixed mind set when it comes to one thing, and a growth mind set when it comes to another.

Some children might need some hands on practical help to build upon the foundations of their learning, or to develop a little more confidence. This can be teamed with positive encouragement.

• Children who have a very fixed mind set .• Children who lack confidence in certain areas .• Children who need a little support to build upon their strategies.

Use positive encouragement constructively:

When your child is finding homework challenging or having difficulty with revision tasks, they may make fixed mind set statements.

The following slides give examples of the type of growth mind set responses you can give to fixed mind set statements….

This is too hard…

I’m just no good at this / I don’t understand this…

This may take some more time and effort but you will get there.

I keep making mistakes.

Plan A hasn’t worked.

Learn from the mistakes you are making, mistakes help you to improve.

Okay - There is always Plan B.

I’ll never be as smart as Jamie.

My friends can do this.

Why don’t you find out how Jamie does it and try that technique.

Ask your friends to explain their approach to you.

I can’t do this.

I give up on this.

You can’t do it YET – you just need to train your brain to do it.

Try some of the strategies that you have learned / try a different strategy.

I can’t make / do this any better.

It’s good enough – it’ll do.

You can always improve, keep trying.

Is this really your best work?

What can you do to help support your child develop a growth mind set?

By using growth mind set statements you

are helping to change their fixed mind sets

into growth mind sets.

A shift in language

can instantly change attitudes

Good job!

Performance Praise does not tell your child what it is that they have done specifically to

receive the praise

Praise the process and the effort!

Great stuff! You’re such a natural!

You areso smart!

Wow! What talent you have!

You’ve done brilliant!

Praise

You tried really hard on that task.

You never gave up – even when it got really tricky!

I can tell you studied very

hard.

Effort

Effort, commitment, resilience.

Effort, commitment

You really pushed yourself today when

participating. Effort

You are not afraid of a challenge! I like that! Effort, resilience.

When children say fixed mind set statements respond with growth mind set statements!

Praise effort rather than

performance

If you are already doing these things, be assured that you are helping to develop your child’s growth mind set;

if you are not – it’s never too late to start!
