Give your heart a little love

6 TDECU Connection | February 2019

This Valentine’s Day, show your heart a little extra love. In the

month focused on sharing love, take some time to ensure you

and your family are leading a heart-healthy lifestyle. And while

it may seem like an overwhelming task, the good news is making

a few small changes can make a huge difference in your health

and how you feel.

Here are some ways to help you & your family become more heart healthy:

Family activitiesLimit screen time and get moving by making physical activity a

regular part of your family’s schedule. It can be as simple as taking

a walk around the neighborhood or picking up a game of soccer in

the backyard.

Start in the kitchenKeep track of how many times you grab food on-the-go during

the week. If it is more often than necessary, find some blocks

of time to do some healthy meal preparation. And be sure to

get everyone involved! Having your kids help prepare meals

encourages them to work together and eat healthier.

Simplify your schedulesIt’s no surprise we live in a fast-paced world, but that’s not

sustainable or healthy, and stress has been proven to have a

negative impact on the health of your heart. Try to prioritize your

activities and see what you can scratch off your list to give more

time to the things that matter most.

Live by exampleThe best way to encourage your children to get on board is to be

their example. Choose to take the stairs, instead of the elevator,

put the phone down and have a conversation, or choose an

activity over watching a TV show. It starts with the little things.

7TDECU Connection | February 2019

Remember: Take baby steps, not giant leaps. Getting heart-healthy is a journey; it doesn’t have to be done all at once. By working together as a family and encouraging one another, you’ll be on the right path to a healthier and more active lifestyle.

Protect yourself from Social Security scams

As identity scams become more prevalent, consumers must become more vigilant to protect their personal identifying information. In an increasingly common scheme, scammers posing as Social Security Administration (SSA) employees target would-be victims in an attempt to steal personal information.

In most cases, the scam artist will tell you your Social Security number has either been linked to a crime or compromised, and as a result, your number has been blocked, possibly preventing you from obtaining your Social Security benefits. The scammer may also tell you your bank account funds are about to be seized by criminals who have your Social Security number and give you false instructions on how to keep your money safe. To make the scam more convincing, your caller ID may display the SSA’s real phone number.

The Social Security Administration will never call to request personal information or a payment, or threaten a loss of your benefits.

If you receive a call from someone requesting your personal information or money:

If you receive a phone call like those mentioned above or any call you think is suspicious, hang up and call the real Social Security Administration at 800.772.1213 or report the call to the Federal Trade Commission by visiting ftc.gov/complaint.

• Never give personal identifying information, including the last four digits of your SocialSecurity number

• Never agree to wire money to buy gift cardsfor or send cash to someone calling you
