Usados
• The subjunctive is always used in sentences with impersonal expressions and que, unless the impersonal expression indicates certainty. Then the indicative is used.
• Ejemplos Es importante que él salga. Es imprescindible que tú hables claramente. Es raro que un músico critique su música. Es necesario que él proteja a los ciudadanos.
Usados
After verbs of hope (desear, esperar, querer, ojalá), use the subjunctive if there is a change of subject. Use the indicative of the verb expressing a hope or wish and the subjunctive for the verb with the new subject. Use the infinitive and omit que if there is no change of subject.
• Ejemplos Mamá quiere que tú regreses a las diez. Nosotros esperamos que Juan gane el partido. Yo deseo que Lucia aprenda español. Ojalá que ellos vengan a tiempo.
Usados
You also use the subjunctive after verbs used to influence the actions of others by, for example, suggesting or prohibiting an action (aconsejar, dejar, exigir, inisitir (en), mandar, pedir, prohibir, recomendar, sugerir). The indicative is used for the first verb because it states a fact. The subjunctive is used for the second verbs because it expresses a possibility rather than a fact, and because there is a change of subject.
• Ejemplos Ellos exigen que nosotros estemos a tiempo. Yo sugiero que tú llegues temprano. Lidia recomienda que yo lea la nueva novela. Te aconseja que te comportes bien con los invitados.
Usados
You need to use the subjunctive after expressions of doubt (dudar, es dudoso, es imposible, es improbable, no es cierto, no es verdad, no estar de acuerdo con, no estar seguro(a) de) because they suggest the second verb to be untrue. Note that the word no can change the meaning of an expression and affect whether you need to use the subjunctive or the indicative form of the second verb.
• Ejemplos No estoy segura de que mi hermano se convierta en policía. Es improbable que Marta aparezca en la lista de personas famosas. No es verdad que tengas que ser un héroe para ser bombero. Dudo que María sea carpintera.
Usados
• After expressions of emotion in Spanish (alegrarse (de), encantar, enojarse, es una lástima, es sorprendente, es triste, estar contento(a), estar emocionado(a), estar triste, gustar, sorprenderse (de), sentir, temer, tener celos de, tener miedo de, es una pena), you must use the subjunctive regardless of whether or not the information is true. Use the indicative of the verb that expresses the emotion and the subjunctive of the verb that follows.
• Ejemplos Me alegro mucho de que estés bien después del accidente. Me sorprende que me hagas preguntas sobre mi futuro. Es una lastima que no estés aquí cuando te necesito tanto. Me alegro que estudies tanto para ser un buen abogado.
