AFTER THE STORMS: HEALING, FORGIVENESS…HOPE

L ast weekend Eileen Colianni introduced herself at Masses at Saint Raphael Parish and told everyone a little about her series: After the

Storms. This weekend Eileen will speak briefly at Masses at Sacred Heart Parish inviting everyone to her series. Eileen is known as an ef-fective counselor, retreat facilitator and speaker. I strongly encourage everyone to attend this series. Eileen facilitated a group of priests who wanted to learn more about helping people through transitions and loss-es in their lives. She was well received by the priests. Many of them agreed she helped them not only to know how to support their parishioners, but also helped them see a need for certain healings in their own lives. They all were grateful for her teachings and compassionate listening.

Another principle reason for which I invited Eileen to join us at Saint Raphael and Sacred Heart goes back to an earlier assignment in my priesthood. I have always been blessed to serve in wonderful parishes. I thank God for every single one of the parishes where I served. The parish I want to mention in this arti-cle is Saint Malachy in Kenmawr. The church there is a magnificent edifice of almost all steel and glass. It is worth a visit if you have never been there.

Saint Malachy Church is designed after the Cathedral of Coventry, England. As you may already know that historic Cathedral was bombed during World War II. It laid in ruins. All that was left was the back wall of the Cathedral still holding the huge Crucifix. Everything else was destroyed. When it came time for the people of Coventry to rebuild their House of God, they built it out of steel and glass rising up to the heavens but also coming forth from the remaining wall with the huge Crucifix visible to all inside the rebuilt Cathedral and outside as well. It became a powerful symbol that nothing can defeat the glory of the Holy Cross. From the destruction that surrounded that Cross came the graces for new life.

The good people of Coventry did something else that I love. They gathered all the charred nails from the burned down former Cathedral. Every year they send forth two of their parishioners into different places in the world carrying two of the nails with them. They are sent as ambassadors of reconciliation, and they contribute their time and presence to the mission of healing, forgiveness and hope. I believe this practice still exists to this very day.

When Father Bill Weirauch decided to build Saint Malachy’s after the rebuilt Cathedral of Coventry, he also had in mind that the parishioners of his parish would serve in the world as healers and reconcilers. If you know the people of that parish, I think you will agree that truly is two of their key values. It is my sincere hope that many of our people here will come out to Eileen’s program on February 6 and 13. One of my deepest dreams is that our new parish will be leaders in the ways of peace and harmony through working together as ambassadors of Christ’s mission of forgiveness and reconciliation. Please consider this invitation.

AFTER THE STORMS HEALING OUR HURTS; RESTORING OUR SPIRITS

Please reserve Thursday evenings February 6th and 13th to attend “After the Storms: Healing, For-giveness...Hope”, a 2-session program designed to focus on parishioners’ healing in the wake of several storms which have battered our faith community recently.

Join Eileen Colianni, counselor, retreat facilitator, and speaker on psychological/ spiritual top-ics, as she shares psychological strategies and spiritual encouragement for healing the hurts and grieving the losses you, our parishioners, have suffered -- again and again -- during the last 18 months. Much of Eileen’s input will also be helpful for healing more personal hurts . His Divine power has given us all we need for life and godliness. 2 Peter 1: 33 Locations:

February 6: Holy Angels Conference Room at Saint Raphael at 7:00PM February 13: Bishop Winter Room at Sacred Heart at 7:00PM

Plan to be present so that we can begin to make our name – bestpghparish – a reality!

Boy Scout Sunday

The Boy Scout Troops chartered by our grouping will observe Scout Sun-day in each of our respective churches. This celebration is officially and nationally observed this year on February 2. Due to Candlemas Day this year, we will observe Scout Sunday on February 9 at the 9:00 Mass in each church. The scouts will conduct the flag honor guard during the pro-cession of the Mass. They will also serve in the other liturgical ministries whenever possible. We welcome the Scouts and their visitors next Sunday. Please join the Scouts and their families for a reception with coffee and donuts after the Masses in both Churches. We are very honored and grateful that the Scouts are a major part of our parish! Imagine what it will

like when we are one vibrant parish combining many other ways where we can reply on sharing all of our strengths with each other; like the way our young scouts are modeling this enthusiasm for us all.

Scout Oath (Promise) The goal of the Boy Scout program is to instill great principles and values, These include the Scout Law, Scout Motto. Scout Slogan and Scout Oath.

“On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and to my country and to obey the Scout Law. To help others at all times. To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.

We take this opportunity to thanks all the cub scouts and boy scouts for their participation in Scout-ing. We also thank the parents for your support. Most of all we thank all the parishioners and friends of Scouting that volunteer time and talent to make our Troops two of the most active scout groups we know.

A scout is TRUSTWORTHY, LOYAL, HELPFUL, FRIENDLY, COURTEOUS, KIND, OBEDIENT, CHEERFUL, THRIFTY, BRAVE, CLEAN AND REVERENT.

Mass Intentions for May through the End of the Year. We know many people are eager to request Mass Intentions for the months of May through Decem-ber. This is very important. We will re-open the Mass books in each parish as soon as we decide if the current Mass schedule will change. The diocesan Blue Print for the Church Alive encourages consoli-dating Masses so the congregation is larger and people can pull together to make the Liturgy even more vibrant. Another factor is planning ahead for the time when we will have fewer priests. We will inform everyone as soon as possible when the Mass Schedule might change. Thank you for your pa-tience a while longer.

How to Contact Father Joe Beginning this week, Father Joe will work out of his Saint Raphael Office most of the time. Father Joe welcomes people from both parishes to stop in and see him. The phone number at Saint Raphael Pastoral Center is 412 661 3100. Since Father Joe will spend much of his daylight time working at Saint Raphael, many of the up-coming Grouping meetings, will now take place at Saint Raphael’s. Please check the bulletin for the next several months so you know exactly where and when each meeting will happen.

GROUPING FISH FRY To start off the Lenten Fish Fry Season, Saint Raphael’s Fish Fry Staff have

agreed to hold a Grand Opening Fish Fry on Ash Wednesday for all of us

from the entire Grouping to attend. We hope everyone from both of our parishes will make an effort to come together at Saint Raphael for this Grand Opening of

the Season.

We hope volunteers from both parishes will join together to help at the Kick Off!

Please sign up online at https://tinyurl.com/StRaphaelFishFryVolunteer It should be lots of fun for everyone. Proceeds from the Grand Opening will be shared by both

parishes. Information about Friday Fish Fries in our Grouping will be in next weekend’s bulletin.

5 HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING

PLEASE PLAN AHEAD TO JOIN US SAVE THE DATES

Easter Triduum (Latin for “three days”) is the center, the core, of the entire year for Christians. These Three Days mark the mystery around which our lives are played out. Adults in our faith community are asked to please plan ahead so that the whole time from Thursday night until Easter Sunday is free of social engagements, free of entertainment, and if we are healthy enough, even free from meals except for nourishment. We measure these days – as our very salvation in the life of God. This year we are inviting both of our parishes and our visitors to join together and celebrate the Easter

Triduum as one family. The following schedule contains the dates and times of each integral liturgy in the one sacred movement of the Triduum:

Holy Thursday April 9, 2020 7:00 PM EVENING MASS OF THE LORD’S SUPPER Saint Raphael Church (Seven Church ‘Walk’ will follow immediately for those that wish to join us)

Good Friday April 10, 2020 1:30 PM THE PASSION OF THE LORD

Sacred Heart Church 7:00PM THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS Saint Raphael Church

Holy Saturday April 11, 2020 8:30 PM EASTER VIGIL Saint Raphael Church (Blessing of Easter Food Baskets at Noon, location to be announced)

BUS TRANSPORTATION WILL BE AVAILABLE BETWEEN CHURCHES.

PARKING ATTENDANTS WILL ALSO BE ON DUTY.

Let’s Make this Easter the Most Beautiful Ever

We are looking forward to a combined Triduum. Almost every grouping has done this already and unanimously where it has been done people say it was the best thing they could have done. They en-joyed seeing the larger crowds and feeling the reverence and deep faith of everyone together. We be-lieve our Three Days of the Easter Triduum will be incredibly beautiful.

To make it even more special we are reaching out to parishioners in both parishes and also all the uni-versity students that worship with us to join the choir for Easter. We realize that you may not want to commit to singing with the choir all year long but that you might be willing to join for Lent up to Holy Week and including Easter. It would be a wonderful way to make your Lent more meaningful too. All that is required for you to join our combined choir is a willing-ness to attend one rehearsal each week of Lent and then to sing with the choir at the special Liturgies of the Holy Week Triduum. (Holy Thursday, Good Friday if you are available) and The Easter Vigil Liturgy on Holy Saturday night.

Please, please, please make this sacrifice for us. You will be greatly blessed by making the Liturgy even more beautiful than even now, meeting new friends and personally growing spiritually during the time preparing for Easter. Thanks for considering this appeal.

SPIRITUAL PLANS FOR THE JOURNEY OF LENT Plans are under way for a grace-filled Lenten season of conversion and renewal for all our parishioners at Saint Raphael and Sacred Heart. We will provide all parishioners a Lenten packet of materials to assist you and your family. We will not be able to mail the packets to you like we did before Advent, but the packets will be ready for you to take home on the weekend before Lent begins. (The weekend of February 22 – 23) Ash Wednesday is on February 26, 2020. We will also distribute some of the packets at the Lenten Fish Fries at a Welcome Booth we are planning to host for all our visitors. The Lenten packets will include daily spiritual reflections, a wallet-size Stations of the Cross devotional card so you pray the Stations at work or school, the Lenten version of the popular liturgical calendar that was de-signed by our own office staff, a Lenten Good Friday Mite Box that will benefit the Ladies of Charity, Saint Vincent de Paul Society and Hearts for Haiti and the people they serve in these ministries. We are also exploring materials for young families with small children as well. Many families have asked us to repeat the special packets for little chil-dren. If you have a certain Lenten devotional item you want us to consider includ-ing in the Lenten packets, please contact Barb Melnick at [email protected]. Barb will be sure to pass your recommendation along to the planning committee. We are scheduling a wide array of Lenten devotions, services, special Lenten Masses and many Lenten Programs at both Sacred Heart and Saint Raphael. We want this Lent to help every member of our Grouping make the best Lent ever. We believe you will be touched deeply when you read how much work has gone into making this coming Lenten very holy and very powerful as we journey with Christ in His Passion and Resurrection. His Holy Cross is our guide! WE ADORE YOU, O CHRIST AND WE BLESS YOU, BECAUSE BY YOUR HOLY CROSS, YOU HAVE

Who is Saint Blaise? Saint Blaise was the bishop of Sebastea (historical Armenia, now Sivas, Turkey) and a physician. As bishop, Blaise instructed his people by his example and by his words, and the great virtues and sanctity of this servant of God were attested by many miracles. From all parts, people flocked to him in search for healing of body or spiritual illness. Saint Blaise became known as both a healer and a "physician of souls." He then retired to a cave where he remained in prayer but people often came to Saint Blaise there for healing miracles. In 316, the governor of Cappadocia and Lesser Armenia Agricolaus began a persecution by order of the Emperor Licinius and Saint Blaise was seized. On his way to the prison in Sebastea, he came across a poor old woman whose pig had been stolen by a wolf. Blaise commanded the wolf return the pig, which it did - alive and uninjured - to the amazement of all. When he reached Sebastea, the woman came to him and brought two fine wax candles in an attempt to dispel the gloom of his darkened cell. Subsequently, he was interrogated by his prison guards and received a severe scourging. After a short while, he was beheaded. Saint Blaise is often depicted holding two crossed candles in his hand, or in a cave with wild animals. He is also often shown with steel combs. He is the Patron of throat illnesses, animals, wool combers, and wool trading and his Feastday is cele-brated on February 3.

Blessing of the candles The blessing of candles is part of the celebration of the Presentation of the Lord. At St Raphael the blessing will take place at the 4:00 Mass and at Sacred Heart at the 11:30 am Mass. At the end of each pew next to the center aisle, a candle will be available to be lighted for the Entrance Rite. After all Masses at both churches, blessed candles for home use will be available.

Sunday, February 9, 2020 - “your light must shine!” at the 9:00 am Mass at Sacred Heart Church

Children's Liturgy of the Word will be celebrated.

After the opening prayer of the Mass, Father will invite the children to come forward to the front of the church. Arianna Narduzzi and Christina Narduzzi [our Faith Formation teachers] will lead the children

The children will hear the Scripture in simple language. There will be prayer and singing. The children will return to your family in the main church during the Creed.

Pittsburgh’s 40 Days for Life annual Lenten campaign will begin on Ash Wednesday, February 26

th! We are called to unite the Body of Christ in

and around Pittsburgh in this on-going spiritual battle to end abortion. Since 2010, during our twice-annual 40 Day campaigns, with the help of hundreds of churches, groups and individual Christians, we have successfully maintained a prayer vigil on the public sidewalk in front of Planned Parenthood in Pittsburgh. God has used this prayerful witness to save precious lives from abortion, and to save souls as well.

Black History Month Black History Month, which is celebrated each year during February, is a chance to learn details of our na-tion’s history that, unfortunately, are far too often neglected and pushed to the wayside.

On February 12, 1926, to celebrate and commemorate the contributions to our nation made by people of African descent, Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950) established Negro History Week. He is considered the “Father of Black History”. For many years, the sec-ond week of February was set aside for this celebration which also corresponded with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist Frederick Douglass. On February 10, 1976, as part of the nation’s bicentennial, the week was expanded to a month and was endorsed for the first time by then President, Gerald Ford. Since

then, U.S. presidents have proclaimed February as Black History Month. In honor of Dr. Carter G. Woodson’s legacy of promoting the study of African American History, an or-nament of Woodson hangs on the White House’s Christmas tree each year. The Theme of this year’s Black History Month is African Americans and the Vote. Do you know that 2020 also marks the sesquicentennial of the Fifteenth Amendment (1870) and the right of black men to the ballot after the Civil War? As you can imagine, the theme speaks to the ongoing struggle on the part of both black men and black women for their right to vote. We propose throughout the month that you could look closely at the life of those black men or black women who are On the Road to Sainthood. We call them Leaders of African Descent.

This week, we will look at Venerable Pierre Toussaint (1776-1853) Venerable Pierre Toussaint was born a slave in Haiti. Philanthropist & Founder of many Catholic charitable works. As a slave, Venerable Pierre Toussaint was brought from Haiti to New York and apprenticed under a popular hairstylist in the city. He eventually became the most sought after hairdresser of high society women. Upon the death of his master, he gained his freedom and was very successful as one of the country’s first black entrepre-neurs. He became quite wealth, but instead of spending lavishly on himself, he supported the Church and the poor. He and his wife sheltered orphans, refuges and other street peo-ple in their home. He founded one of New York’s first orphanages and raised money for the city’s first cathedral. Even during yellow fever epidemics, Toussaint would risk his life to help others by nursing the sick and praying with the dying.

“I have never felt I am a slave to any man or woman but I am a servant of Almighty God who made us all. When one of his children is in need, I am glad to be His slave.”

In Pennsylvania, as of the first week of January 2020, Allegheny County is the epicenter and has the most flu cases of the state at 5,175. Last year at this time, there were only 212 recorded flu cases. PA Department of Health recom-mends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older as the first and most im-portant step in protecting against this serious disease. In addition to getting vaccinated, you can take everyday preventive actions like staying away from sick people and washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs. If you are sick with flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading flu to others.

Room 111 Kindergarten News Sacred Heart School has just finished the first semester. Our 100th day of school will be coming up soon. Kindergarten children have made giant steps in the learning process. We can now name and print all the letters of the Alphabet and tell you the sounds that each letter makes. They are working very hard at blending all those sounds together to make new words and read stories on our own. We are very excited to tell you that we are beginning to learn to add. We have joined groups together and now are using the plus sign. Big steps for little children. They keep very busy learning all about God’s Love for us. We meditate every day. They look for-ward to this special time. Of course we still fit in lots of art and games. Remember, “All you really need to know you learned in Kindergarten”. Share, play fair, don’t hit people, put things back where you found them, clean up your own mess, don’t take things that are not yours, say you’re sorry, wash your hands before you eat, live a balanced life, take a quiet time each day and when you go out in the world watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together.

As you would probably assume, currently, each of our parishes has its own bank account in which it manages the $10 contributions that individuals make to the priests for mass intentions. However, in our continuing ef-forts to prepare for the merging of our two parishes into one, and in keeping with Diocesan directives, we have begun the process of combining the two separate stipend accounts. In this effort we ask that, effective immediately, if you are paying mass stipends by check, please make the check payable to MASS STIPEND ACCOUNT. Also, we remind you to not include any other payments (such as for sanctuary candles) or donations when writing a check for stipends.

Other than the endorsement on the back of the check that you can see after the check is cashed, you will not notice any other change. Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation and assistance in this matter.

eGiving with Faith Direct

This month we are introducing to our Sacred Heart family, and re-introducing to our Saint Raphael family, a new and exciting way to contribute to our parish offertory and diocesan collections - Faith Direct. Faith Direct enables parish-ioners to make offertory contributions through either direct debit from your checking/savings account or through credit/debit card. Just think - no more writing checks or searching for envelopes on the way out the door to Mass! Now you can apply the convenience of direct debit to our parish offerings in much the same way as you may now use it to make your mortgage, utilities, car or tuition payments.

Please consider taking advantage of this new opportunity. You will be receiving more information in your U.S. mail and/or via e-mail in the next couple weeks. You may also get a preview of the options and even en-roll by visiting faith.direct/PA1027 (for Sacred Heart parishioners) or faith.direct/PA723 (for Saint Raphael parishioners). We hope that you will find this a convenient way to support our parishes!

PLEASE EVALUATE OUR BULLETIN AND WEBSITE We have recently been told by many people who are parishioners and also people outside of our parish, how much they appreciate all the work that goes into our weekly bulletin. Our Parish Bulletin Editor is Manon Proulx. Obviously, Manon works hard. Eventually, Manon is going to begin to update and improve our Website too. Another enhancement that she is looking at is Flocknote; this new and improved way of communicating will make it much simpler for you to get the information you want from us! We will talk about it more in the next bulletins. In the mean time, please note that if you would prefer the electronic version of the bulletin, you can visit our website: www.bestpghparish.org/bulletins or search for Saint Raphael or Sacred Heart in: https://www.parishesonline.com/

In the mean time, we are always looking for ways to hear from you about your suggestions and insights related to the Bulletin. We are sure that everyone who offered their opinions were replied to so that your recommendations were understood. Hopefully, you can see what you offered was followed up and implemented in the format of the bulletin.

Once again, we are looking for more ways to move forward. Please complete the evaluation with your thoughts and return it to us by way of either dropping it in the collection basket or sending it to Manon.

Dear Manon: Please consider my suggestion: 1 .......................................................................................................................................................................
