This will be my last “Message” in the Warrior as your President. At our Armed Forces Day Din-ner in May, you will elect a new Chapter Presi-dent. It has been my privilege to serve you these past two years, and I am confident that your new President will do an outstanding job.

Happenings by Jack Logan

Congressman Mark Amodei hosted a Town Hall meeting on February 17th to address Veterans’ issues. Representatives from the VA Hospital and the Office of Veteran Services, as well as other supporting agencies, answered questions from the au-dience. LTC Sharlee Smith, Sixth Region President, spoke out in support of increased help for Veterans and greater aware-ness of the needs of Women Veterans. COL Jack Logan and Russ Wyant also attended. At the last minute Congressman Amodei was forced to cancel his appearance due to illness. His Representative for Veterans issues, Tracy Soliday, introduced the panel and continued the program in his absence.

The Nevada National Guard is hosting The Governor’s Mili-tary Ball on April 25th to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War. It will be held at the Eldorado Resort Ball Room. Vietnam Veterans who cannot afford the price of a ticket may register and be sponsored by area companies who are donating funds for that purpose. For further information contact John Brownell of the Nevada National Guard Associa-tion at (775) 232-1919.

COL Kathy Roehr recently retired from her position as Rural/Telehealth Program Manager for Reno’s VA Hospital, culminat-ing a long and successful career as an Army nurse and civilian administrator. We wish you a healthy, happy retirement!

Several Chapter members attended the Change of Command ceremony on February 5th to witness the “Passing of the Gui-don” from CPT David Robinson to CPT Scott Covington as command of the local recruiting company changed. CPT Rob-inson, who has been a valued member of the Chapter’s Execu-tive Committee, will retire and remain in the Reno area. We wish you well, David.

COL Jack Logan has recently been appointed as a member of the Northern Nevada Veterans’ Cemetery Advisory Commit-tee by Governor Brian Sandoval. In this position, he joins LTC Sharlee Smith who has been a Committee Member for several years.

LTC Lee Johnson became the Professor of Military Science at UNR on February 25th as LTC Mike Minaudo departed fol-lowing 4 years as the PMS. LTC Johnson came from duty in Puerto Rico and LTC Minaudo is headed for command of a NATO Battalion in Brussels, Belgium. We wish them much suc-cess in their new assignments.

COL Dick Hobbs has reported on the recent programs spon-sored by the National Security Forum. In January, Dr. John Scire and Dr. Jerry O’Driscoll presented “The Geostrategic Ramifications of the Surge in Global Oil Production” with comments by COL Ty Cobb.

In February Keith Hansen spoke of “The Future of Nuclear Weapons” describing the arsenals of those nations having nu-clear weapons.

COL Hobbs has also been involved in the taping of the TV pro-gram “Lawyers, Guns and Money” with Larry Martines. Their first program aired on 8 February and focused on Islam. Future programs will be presented at 4:30 pm on Channel 4 on March 1st and March 8th and will deal with terrorism.

The Galena High School JROTC Rifle Team, under the coach-ing direction of LTC Phil Telander, has won the Conference Championship of the League of Northern Nevada and placed third in Nevada State competition. The Junior Varsity Team took first place in the Conference against other JV teams and first place in State competition. Congratulations to all.

MAJ Jerry Morris, Executive Officer of the ROTC Detach-ment at UNR, is preparing for the Wolf Pack Battalion’s annual Awards Ceremony to be held on April 3rd at 1:00 pm in the Joe Crowley Theater on the UNR campus. These are impres-sive ceremonies and present an opportunity for the Chapter to present the AUSA medal and scholarships to deserving ca-dets.

The Color Guard from UNR’s ROTC Battalion did an outstand-ing job in posting the Colors at the Chapter’s Presidents’ Day Dinner. They will be called upon to repeat their performance at the Banquet to be held on April 11th in conjunction with the Sixth Region Spring Meeting.
