THE PROBUS CLUB OF OAKVILLE Established in 1988, The Fifth Probus Club in Canada As I set out to write this message I was struck with the realization that this will be my last "President’s Message". The reality that my year as President was coming to an end was a bit of a shock as the time has flown by. Thank you for your encouragement and kindness during my year. It's been very rewarding and I appreciate your confidence in me. In closing, I look forward to seeing you and your partners at the President’s Reception on September 25 th , 2014. This will be an outstanding evening with the opportunity to meet the new President. It will also feature good food, live entertainment. I would highly recommend it to new members as a wonderful opportunity to get to know your fellow club members. You are welcome to bring guests as well. See you there. John Beales The President’s Message August/September 2014 Summer keeps rolling on and soon will be at our annual meeting. As noted in my last message, the nomination committee has been busy and a slate of candidates will be presented at our August meeting for election at the September Annual Meeting. I urge you to exercise your franchise and vote at the meeting. Since our last letter we enjoyed a wonderful trip to Stratford to see the delightful musical “Crazy For You”. Thanks to Robin’s group for organizing. Just prior to press time for the newsletter we will experience the adventure of the Grand River cruise with lunch and Blazing Fiddles entertainment. July and August have been quieter for the club activities but we continue to enjoy a strong turnout to our meetings. Thank you for the continuing support and for signing up and paying your annual dues in good time. At our July meeting you may recall a Notice of Motion was submitted which advised the membership of the executives’ intention to bring forward several amendments to the Bylaws for a vote at the August meeting. These amendments allow for the creation of a new Member of the Year Award and refinements to the existing Life Membership Award. The draft materials are attached to this month’s meeting minutes. The Executive would appreciate it if you would review the material prior to the August meeting. In addition, if the resolutions are passed it will set in motion a tight nomination process for this year. I would invite you to think about any noteworthy candidates that you may wish to nominate in the event that the resolutions are passed. On a lighter note, Mike and Verna Purcell, Kelly and I had the pleasure of entertaining John and Joan Taylor from the Sydney Grandview Club as they briefly passed through Oakville on their way to a tour of the Maritimes. The attached picture records John presenting me with a keepsake book of Australia.

“I normally speak about the history of the Six Nations people (Iroquois), how they arrived in Ontario following the events of the American Revolution, and their relationship with the settler world. More specifically I focus on the family of Chief George H.M. Johnson, whose family inhabited the Chiefswood estate (where our museum is located) and the life of his youngest daughter, E. Pauline Johnson, the famous Canadian poet and performer. The Johnson family was unique in that they occupied a high place in society despite the fact that Chief Johnson (a Mohawk man) was married to an Englishwoman named Emily Howells. Their children, particularly their youngest daughter, Pauline, straddled two cultural worlds, making for a unique and distinctly Canadian upbringing.”

Did you know that

the sound of chirping birds is a proven energy booster? Scientists have found that simply listening to birdsong helps us stay more alert and sharpens our thinking. The reason? Because the pattern of birdsong triggers our theta brainwaves - which are energizing.

Gallagher opened the morning newspaper and was dumbfounded to read in the obituary column that he had died. He quickly

phoned his best friend Finney. "Did you see the paper?" asked Gallagher. "They say I died!!"

"Yes, I saw it!" replied Finney. "...Where ya callin' from?"
