Grandparents, Grandkids Benefit From Better Hearing(NewsUSA) - Grand-parents and grandchil-dren have much to learnfrom one another, andsuch valuable relation-ships should be culti-

    ated.Oxford University

research has shown that'involved' grandparentscontribute significantlyto better-adjusted grand-children.The research suggests

that children find uniqueacceptance in their

relationships withgrandparents, whichbenefits them emotion-ally and mentally. Thegrandparental bond isbuilt on communication. In fact, most childrenstudied did not identifydistance as an importantfactor if communication

    as strong.Unfortunately, hearing

loss is the number-onechallenge to communi-cation. According to the

    ational Institute onDeafness and Other

Communication Disor-ders (NIDCD), age andhearing loss are stronglyrelated -- 30 percent ofseniors from 65 to 74

ears old suffer from ahearing disability. For adults 75 years of

age or older, hearingloss jumps to 47 percent."It doesn't take a PhD

for my patients to under-stand the many costs ofhearing loss," says SreekCherukuri, MD, a certi-fied ear, nose and throatphysician based in

    Chicago, Ill.Beyond emotional

well-being, even some-thing simple like takingthe grandkids to the poolcan turn dangerous ifgrandma can't hearpossible cries for help.

Driving puts thechildren at risk if thegrandparents cannothear oncoming traffic orcar horns. The NIDCD reports

that only one out ofevery five people who

needs a hearing aidactually wears one. Thisis largely due to theextravagant cost of mosthearing aids."I found that I saw too

many patients with hear-ing loss going home

without a solution because they couldn'tafford hearing aidprices," says Dr. Cheru-kuri.Cherukuri's response

was to develop inexpen-sive but effective hear-ing aids."With today's technol-

ogy, a quality hearingaid shouldn't cost morethan a digital camera oriPod," Cherukuri says.MDHearingAid, found

at www.mdhearingaid.com, isn't just areliable source foraffordable hearing aids,it's also a good source

    for expert consumer

    information."You should see a

physician and get thebest hearing aid you canafford. We offer an

    excellent choice for

those who cannot afforda custom hearing aid."Seniors should enjoy the benefits of their ripeage.

Time-saving Tips To Help You Enjoy The Holidays(NAPSI)As the

holidays get closer, itcan be easy to feel likethere is too much to doand too little time.Fortunately, there is noneed to panic.

The good news is thatthere are plenty of waysto make the holidayssimple and stress free, cutting down on chaosand making more timefor what matters most:family and friends. Nowis the best time to utilizeyour Amana brandappliances to make themixing, cooking, prep-

ping and baking easy. Here are some tips:Start with smart plan-

ning. Two weeks beforeguests arrive, look overyour recipes and writeout your menu to makeshopping quick, orga-nized and easy. Stock upthe week prior to themain event and store

produce in your refrig-erator crisper to keep itfresh.Make as much as you

can ahead of time. Aweek before the mainevent, take a closer lookat the menu. What canyou make ahead of time?Prep deli meats andcheeses and make what

you can of your appetiz-ers and even side dishes.Set them on a serving

platter and store in therefrigerator. All youhave to do is unwrap andserve when your guestsarrive.Make good use of your

    microwave. With yourside dishes already

prepped, pop them in themicrowave so theyreready to serve inseconds. Reheat asneeded during yourdinner andofcourseuse your micro-wave when feasting onleftovers.Let the freezer be your

friend. Whether yourehosting a big holiday

dinner or bringing a dishto pass, if your scheduleis hecticfear not.Freeze cookies, dessert

bars and breads. Thawthem out and youregood to go. Keep a fewextra batches on hand inthe freezer during the

busy holiday season andnever be left emptyhanded.Clean as you go. Just

like whistling, try clean-ing up while you work.Keep dishes movingfrom the counter to thedishwasher so theyreready when you needthem. Itll keep youfrom facing a mountainof cleanup at the end ofthe night.

Appalachian Music Legend Ralph Stanley To Perform At Historic Blairstown Theatre

Ralph Stanley, the mosttowering figure intraditional Appalachianmusic, will appear in anexclusive area engagementat the Historic BlairstownTheatre on Saturday,December 3, 2011. RalphStanleys voice is not ofthis century. Nor of the

last one, for that matter. Itsstark emotional urgency isrooted in a darker time, when pain was thecommon coin of life andthe world offered sinfulhumanity no hope ofrefuge.Preserved in the cultural

amber of remote Appala-chia, this terse, forlorn

sound is the bedrock ofStanleys inimitable style. But dont mistake anancient voice for ancientways. Stanley tours and performs with the vigorand elan of a rock star. Now 84 years old (as ofFebruary 25, 2011),Stanley has been perform-ing professionally since heand his older brother,

Carter, formed a band intheir native southwesternVirginia in 1946. Betweenthat date and 1966, whenCarter died, the StanleyBrothers and the ClinchMountain Boys becameone of the most celebrated bluegrass groups in theworld, rivaling in popular-ity such titans as Bill

Monroe and Flatt &Scruggs. As a bandleader, Stanley

nourished such young andpromising talents as RickySkaggs, Keith Whitley,Larry Sparks and CharlieSizemore, all of whomeventually graduated todistinguished solo careers. He has won Grammys for

    Best Country Male Vocal-

ist Performance (beatingout Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Tim McGraw,Lyle Lovett and RyanAdams) and Album of theYear (for his part in the OBrother, Where ArtThou? Collection) and isa central figure in the D. A.

Pennebaker/Chris Hege-dus 2000 documentary,Down From The Moun-tain. In January, 2000,Stanley became the firstartist of the new millen-nium to be inducted intothe historic Grand OleOpry.

Seating for Dr. Stanley'sappearance is extremelylimited. Only 200 seatswill be sold. Tickets areavailable on-line atwww.TheHBT.com or atthe Historic BlairstownTheatre box office. (908)362-1399.
