Are you a good detective? The Vocabulary Constabulary needs your help. This is all you have to do. You can often detect the meaning of a word by reading it in context, that is, by reading the other words around it

in a piece of text. Find the page and the article in TPP and then detect the word or phrase that solves the clue to its meaning. The number of letters and the starting letter of the solution are in brackets after each clue.

Editing- a vital skil!

Can you find the errors in the story below? There are ten spelling mistakes, five capital letters

have been omitted and five full stops have also been left out.

This article first appeared in Planet History in the December 2016 edition of The Primary Planet.

A Farmer’s December Diary

Friday morning;

It’s freezing hard and the surrounding countryside is ever so silent A solitary car travelling

slowly on the slipery road momentarily splits the silence. it reminds me that I’m not the only

one up at this hour.

I turn on the lights and hear the groans of the cows rousing from their slumbur. ‘you have it

tough ladies,’ I think to myself wryly. I spread the silage in front of the bariers and they all

pop their heads out eagerly, but only after the “herd-leader” has taken her spot at the barrier

first.

i give their cubacles a clean down with the yard brush. I then quickly check that the drinkers

are clean and working As I depart the shed the first rays of light are starting to peep through

the night’s veil.

Saturday;

I wake up and I am filled with dread. It’s time to put the cows in for winter, which means a

hectic day lyes in store Not only that, but every day for the coming months will be centered

round feeding and calving. I spend the morning doing the usual, but important, pre-winter

checks and repairs for safe and productive farming

Sunday;

I empty the paddocks one by one and start to fill the shed. I have enlisted help for this, as I

like to seperate the cattle according to weight and time of calving. after months of the great

outdoors, some cattle can be reluctent to be housed. I like having another adult with me to

ensure safety.

The last batch of cattle is brought from an outlying farm. I am most nervus about these as

they have to be brought on the trailer A slip in the trailer or sudden braking can cause an in-

calf cow to lose her calf. fingers crossed there will be no ill-effects of the 10km jurney, but

only time will tell.

Did you know … about Polaris?

Polaris is the correct name for the North Star. When you are looking at Polaris you are facing north. It is easy then, to find south, east and west. Long ago, sailors used Polaris to keep track of the direction they were sailing at night. The plough is a group of stars in the shape of a plough. If you find the plough, you can use the two stars farthest from the handle to show you where Polaris is.

Some statements to think about? Everyone should have the right to live how they choose.

Children should have the same rights as adults.

Rich people have more rights than poor people.

Men are treated unfairly.

Everyone is equal in today's world.

Racism is a thing of the past.

Refugees need to earn their human rights when they enter a new country.

In Have Your Say, we want to get you talking. Actually, more than talking, we want to get you discussing, thinking and arguing (but in a productive manner), so that you can air your views on matters

of the world. And if you don’t have views on such matters, now is the time to start. Have your say!

This month’s topic: The Right to Vote

In class groups, or in pairs, discuss the above statements and see how you feel about the budget and how it is planned. Have your say about how, if you were in charge, the budget would be planned.

The reason for the difference is an atmospheric phenomenon known as the jet stream. The jet stream is a very high-altitude wind, which always blows from the West to the East across the Atlantic. Planes moving at a constant air speed, go faster in the West-East direction when they are moving with the wind than in the opposite direction.
