The Printed Voice of St. Francis of the Tetons Episcopal Church
The Flock
September 2019 The Voice of the Vestry This has been a very busy month for St. Francis, with the Tin Cup, the Yard Sale and the 25th Anniversary of the Church celebration, all happening within a 30 day period. I am so grateful to all of you, for your tireless support for all the projects that we do at St. Francis. Thanks to Nancy we always have sign-up sheets so we can keep track of food and help for each event. There are so many, that have already signed up for a dish or a task, that will still call me before the event to see if there is anything else that needs to be done. We are working like a well oiled machine. This wholehearted energy is contagious and I am truly grateful to be a part of this parish and what we represent in our community.
To me St. Francis is like an octopus with arms in all directions. We are nurturing the arms that feed our spirituality as well as the arms that feed the outer community. It is music to my ears when I hear of a group, within the church, that is going to play golf, taking a trip on the river, organizing a hike or meeting for a day of skiing. Likewise, there are also trips planned to see the sick in the hospital or to arrange transportation for those that need our help.
This summer our Spiritual Growth Group was followed by the Holden Evening Prayer service in June, July and August. We were blessed to be able to worship with some of our brothers and sisters from Good Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church in Jackson. This summer I called the third Wednesdays of the month “wonderful Wednesdays” because we had Centering Prayer in the morning, Spiritual Growth Group and then Evening Prayer to finish the day. Pastor Inger was an inspiration with her prayerful singing. She said she is looking forward to joining us again next summer. We now have a new group meeting at the church called The Child Grief Group, this group focuses on those of us who have lost a child. They meet once a month after church. The act of giving is met with receiving and it is what we do at St. Francis.
Our next event is Eat and Meet, it will take place on Tuesday the 3rd of September. It will be the day after the Labor Day, a perfect time to take the night off cooking. Come enjoy the last BBQ outside, as fall leads us back into winter. Blessing of the Animals is coming in October, invite your neighbors to come with their animals as well, to feel the spirit of St. Francis. I think it is my dog’s favorite Sunday as it is the only time he is officially invited. God’s love and peace, Rod
So Much To Be Thankful For
Blessing of the Animals Scheduled for October 6th
Another Successful Yard Sale
It was a beautiful sunny day, the air was cool but the gusty winds proved to be a bit of a challenge for our Bishop’s visit, re-aff irmat ion and anniversary celebration luncheon.
Bishop Thom led us in a beautiful Holy Eucharist service, which also featured the re-affirmation of Carol Taylor and Sharon Froberg. The congregation felt so blessed to have been part of this momentous day for Carol and Sharon, as well as being part of the anniversary of St. Francis and the Bishop’s annual visit; all reasons to be thankful for.
St. Francis parishioners, past and present, came from near and far for the service and festivities. Among some of the honored guests were Jeanne Marie Callahan, Gregory Murray, John Meier, Ann Meier, Darrell and Sara Reinke, as well as many of our founding members, who are still in-volved with the church today. Everyone enjoyed a hearty picnic meal that consisted of delicious side dishes, salm-on, steak, and for dessert there was an anniversary cake and cookies. Ann Meier read us a beautiful letter from her family, it spoke of her father Bob Meier, his love of St. Francis, and the legacy that he and his family wanted to leave in this church.
Well wishes also came in from our friends at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Jackson Hole, James Meier, Bishop Thornton and wife Jan, Bob
Pickens, and the Diocesan office in Boise.
Overall, it was a beautiful celebration day enjoyed with our St. Francis family and friends.
Dear friends, Bishop John and I are so sorry that we cannot be with you as you celebrate your Twenty-fifth Anniversary tomorrow. Congratulations on that huge accomplishment! We will be thinking of all of you. When we visited you about eight or ten years ago, we handed out a little booklet describing the history of how St. Francis of the Tetons got started. If you want to make more copies of that feel free to do so. We are both in good health and living on our little farm in Oregon's Willamette Valley. When Bishop John isn't on his tractor or feeding his chickens, he is often writing stories or poems. (You can look at his website at John S. Thornton.com. to see what he has had published.) We welcome visitors, so if any of you are in the region, let us know. We would love to see you. Warmest regards to each of you, Jan Thornton
Once again, the members of St. Francis have pulled off another successful Yard Sale.
Profits to date totaled $1860.00 and money is still coming in from the sale.
We still have a beautiful wood bunk bed set, with a queen on the bottom
and twin on the top, as well as a plaid couch and an antique baby pram. Please call the church if you are interested in any of these items.
Thank you to all who took on this huge fundraiser, and thank you to Deb
Rouleau and Angie Warner for overseeing this event.
The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself.

St. Francis Approved Vestry Minutes From July 9, 2019
Attendees: Rod Gust, Ruth Lindstedt, Pete Oslund, Jim Steele, Wood Palmer, Steve Thomas, Jim Rein
Meeting called to order at 5:30 pm. Prayer by Wood Palmer
Minutes from June 14th meeting : Motion to approve by Pete Oslund, seconded by Steve Thomas (date in heading corrected/
correction of Rob to Rod for purchasing church smoke detectors)
Senior Warden:
1 – Rod reported that an ornamental crabapple tree was planted in the garden in appreciation to Dan Neese for the
lights in the sanctuary.
2 – Rod passed a sample of plaque honoring Dan Neese. The group agreed to drop word “in” and just read “Dan
Neese In Appreciation of your Generosity – 2019” Approved unanimously.
3 – Mission Statement – Unanimously approved as submitted
4 – Yard Sale – Scheduled for August 10th. Wood suggested that we contact Lucky Dog thrift store to see if they
would like to come get items leftover. Jim Steele to check with Lucky Dog and Deseret in Rexburg to see if they would come
with a truck.
5 – 25th Anniversary of St. Francis – Scheduled for August 25th. Lots of old members as well as other persons in-
volved in the past will be invited. Bishop Brian will be here. There will be a Bar-B-Que plus a birthday cake. Wood suggest-
ed that we contact Teton Valley news for an article in the paper for the week prior.
6 – Interior painting – will be suspended.
Treasurer: Ruth reviewed the Transaction Detail by Account. There was special discussion on the Fall River Bill. She is
working with Fall River to evaluate warm weather expenses. The report was unanimously approved. Other financial reports
were reviewed and approved.
Building and Grounds:
1 – 20x30 tent – discussion. Wood suggested that we keep track of rental income. Steve suggested that we take a
portion of the rental income and collect enough to purchase a 20x30 tent. Matter is tabled.
2 – Lights in lower sanctuary – need rewiring. Rod offered to take care of this.
3 – Smoke detectors – still being evaluated.
4 – Front ramp – Nancy is talking with her brother regarding the architectural work. Wood moved to defer this for
further study with construction in spring of 2020.
5 – Carpets – they were cleaned.
6 – Accordion doors – it was agreed that we will consider removing the accordion doors and possibly storing them.
7 – High electrical usage – The pressure tank, the heater in the office and a hose bib outside are thought to be caus-
ing excessive use. Exterior lights cut back in time of ignition.
Sunday School: It has started back on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month.
Tin Cup: Jim Steele is helping Elaine Moehring prepare for Tin Cup.
Old Business: none
New Business: Wood inquired about having Nancy take minutes. Rod suggested that he would pass the gavel and take
minutes.
Meeting adjourned.
