Project Raw is an initiative of Street Project Foundation, focused on the discovery of talent in music, dance and drama, training and mentoring of young people between 13-25years old. This presentation takes people through the journey of becoming, using this initiative as a case study. This was presented at Performing the World Conference 2014, in New York.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT NIGERIA.

!   Population: Over 170million people.

!   Over 70% of its population are under 30.

!   The national bureau of statistics states that 112million Nigerians live below poverty line.

!   According to the Central Intelligence Agency, the unemployment rate in Nigeria as at 2011 was 23.9%

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LAGOS,

NIGERIA.

!   One of the world’s largest cities, which according to the Lagos State government has a population of about 18million people.

!   It also holds a record of having one of the world’s largest slums.

!   There’s a high unemployment rate.

!   The population and poverty rise breeds violence, abuse of drugs, prostitution, health hazards and so many other negative vices.

Question:

With over 60% of Nigeria’s population living under the poverty line and over 70% of its population being under age 30, how do we ensure that poverty and crime rates reduce drastically?

!   Developed a website designed to register members and upload short videos directly to our YouTube channel.

!   Hire talent scouts to hunt for talents in the slums

!   Talents are randomly selected

!   Use camcorders and smart phones to record and upload on our YouTube channel.

!   Shortlist and call for auditions

Conclusion !   The process of becoming is a learning curve.

!   The moment you stop learning, is the moment you stop becoming.

!   Failing is okay.

!   What’s important is that you discover who you are, what you’re designed to do in life, embrace it, nurture it, love it, perfect it and you’ll find out that there’s so much more you can become.
