August 2014 | PBS Hawaii 3
We’ve all sat through meetings that are pedestrian and even pointless. Today, I want to tell you about a transformative meeting, where community builders challenged PBS Hawaii to think bigger and aim higher – and were willing to back up their challenge with support. The meeting started off with business as usual. Alongside Robert
Pennybacker, executive producer of our HIKI N -O education project and weekly TV show, I made a pitch for continued funding. On the other side of the table: Joyce Stupski of the Stupski Family Fund of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation, and Kelvin Taketa, President and CEO of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation. Both
were early HIKI N -O supporters. Robert and I were pointing out the pro-gram’s strides when Mrs. Stupski politely stopped us. “I’ve read your report and I believe in this program – you don’t need to convince me,” she said. “However, I see a very lean budget for a statewide program
with more than 80 schools. That concerns me.” Mr. Taketa noted that HIKI N -O doesn’t cost school participants a dime, but it is tough on their time. Teachers spend vacations and weekends getting trained in this New Literacy of digital media. Meanwhile, their often-overscheduled students work on HIKI N -O stories after school and on weekends. School teams find and research a story in their community, and write, shoot, edit and produce a video using critical thinking, fairness and oral and written communications. Students must also meet national (adult) PBS journalism standards. That involves more time in learning by re-doing and refining. “HIKI N -O belongs in the schools, not outside the school day,” Mr. Taketa said.
Robert and I were quiet, plunged into thought. Could PBS Hawaii retain the independence and real-world deadlines of HIKI N -O if it were embedded in state schools? And how could we afford the required curriculum development in alignment with new Common Core State Standards to make the case to the Hawaii State Department of Education?
Mrs. Stupski, a former special-education teacher in San Francisco, said, “Come back with a three-year proposal to make this happen. Don’t undercut yourself. Tell me what it will really cost.” As Robert says, “It was a turning point.” I’m pleased to share with you the result: The Stupski Family Fund of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation has awarded a three-year, $2.1 million grant to grow HIKI N -O into the vision of being an elective class for middle and high schoolers across the state. We also found out that Hawaii DOE superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi is a fan of this plan and will support PBS Hawaii’s HIKI N -O elective. When Joyce Stupski and Kelvin Taketa challenged HIKI N -O to be more, they set the table for many more HIKI N -O students. This strengthens learning and work-force development. And that’s the story of a transformative meeting of the minds, reverberating into the future for HIKI N -O and for the benefit of schools and work places.
With gratitude,
August 2014 | PBS Hawaii 3

sentencing a teenager to life without parole serve our society well? The United States is the only country in the world that routinely condemns children to die in prison. This is the story of one of those children, now a young man, seeking a second chance in Florida. At age 15, Kenneth Young received four consecutive life sentences for a series of armed robberies. Imprisoned for more than a decade, he believed he would die behind bars. Now a U.S. Supreme Court decision could set him free.

The topics for all HIKI NŌ stories are chosen by the students who create them, which results in a very diverse range of subjects. However, certain story themes seem to recur, and in the month of August, PBS Hawaii will present compilation specials that focus on three recurring themes:
• HiKi NŌ: Focus On The arts – august 7 | 7:30 pm• HiKi NŌ: Focus On The Environment – august 14 | 7:30 pm• HiKi NŌ: Focus On Local Businesses – august 21 | 7:30 pm
The stories compiled in these specials are drawn from the entire HIKI NŌ show archive, dating back to the premiere episode from February 2011. All three specials are hosted by Shisa Kahaunaele, a 2014 HIKI NŌ graduate from Kamehameha Schools Kapalama. Shisa is working toward a career in broadcast journalism.

passionate, bittersweet account of one family’s multi-generational experience living as permanent refugees. Now a Danish resident, director Mahdi Fleifel grew up in the Ain el-Helweh refugee camp in southern Lebanon, established in 1948 as a temporary refuge for exiled Palestinians. Today, the camp houses 70,000 people and is the hometown of generations. While the filmmaker’s childhood memories are surprisingly warm and humorous, his yearly visits reveal the increasing desperation of family and friends who remain trapped in psychological as well as political limbo.

WILCOX Jim Burns: His Own Man Jim Burns reflects on his life as a judge, a father, a husband and a cancer survivor. By the time his father, John A. Burns, became the second Governor of the State of Hawaii, Jim was already a lawyer. He carved out a career path: as a judge in
Family Court and later as Associate Judge and Chief Judge in the Intermediate Court of Appeals. “You don’t live your father’s life, you live your own life, and that’s what I’ve tried to do, without embarrassing him,” Jim says.

SERVICE Her Majesty’s Secret Service, or MI6 as it is known, is the world’s most legendary spy agency, thanks to the James Bond stories. Set up in 1909 as the Secret Service Bureau, the existence of MI6 was not formally acknowledged until 1994 – which goes a long way toward understanding the modus operandi of this government agency. With unprecedented access to some of the key players in British espionage, this film lifts the veil on the shadowy world of spying, going back in time and behind the scenes to look at some the world’s most calculated and delicately executed operations.
