Christmas Gift For Leukaemia Charity!

Bray Properties recently presented the local Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research charity with a cheque for £1000 in recognition of their sterling work in our community and the many local families they help.

Charmaigne Bray said “As a family who have lost a close relative to leukaemia we were pleased to be able to support such a worthy cause again this year”.

In tandem with their donation, Charmaigne has created a Facebook group called Gibraltar’s cooking page and is inviting all interested persons to submit their local recipes, with a view to publishing them and raising funds for Leukaemia Research and the Lady Williams Centre.

Take a TabletIt’s that time of year when we will all be thinking at some point of what gifts to buy our loved ones or even what you would like to receive. In recent years tablets have taken the world by storm and with so many choices out there we have made it easy for you and pulled together what we consider to be the top 5 tablets currently available.

The New iPad with Retina Display (iPad 4)It may be slightly heavier and larger than the Ipad 2, but its stunning 9.7 inch retina display, together with an increased processor (the A6X chip with quad core graphics) and reputed to be twice as fast as its predecessor makes it stand out from the crowd.

As with the iPad Mini, this latest model also comes with Apple’s lightning connector which means you will need to purchase an adapter to use with your existing apple compatible devices.

It does also come pre-loaded with goodies, such as a 5mp rear camera and 1.2mp HD front facing camera which is perfect for catching up with family and friends on Face Time. Did we also mention it comes with 1080HD recording ability, SIRI (Apple’s own intelligent assistant), and has over 650,000 apps available to download from Itunes.

If you want the best, then go for this one. Prices start at £399 for the Wifi 16GB model.

The iPad MiniSmall is now once again beautiful in Apple’s eyes. The style that has become synonymous with Apple flows through this new model with a 7.9 inch display, but if you’re looking for the latest specifications, then this is probably not the tablet for you.

The iPad Mini feels every inch an Ipad, just simply a small one and if size and price counts then you will want to consider this model. It

does not have the superb retina display of the new iPad 4 and it is priced higher than all of its competitors in the field but its diminutive size and the sheer quantity of apps available will make it a must-buy for many Apple fans.

Great size to carry around. Prices start at £269 for the Wifi 16GB model.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9As the name implies, the Samsung offers a 8.9 inch display and could be the best option if you’re more interested in portability than in playing games and watching movies on a 10-inch screen.

The Galaxy Tab 8.9 runs on the Android system using a 1Gz processor and with so many websites using Flash applications, it has the added attraction of being able to surf the web without limitations and a large selection of Apps.

With a screen resolution of 1280 x 800, the Samsung is behind the Ipad 4 when it comes to picture quality, and its 3mp front-facing camera is a poor runner-up against Apple’s flagship model, but if you want an Android tablet that’s a little easier to wrap your hands around, but not so small that it feels like an oversized smartphone, this Samsung might be the perfect fit.

A lightweight and versatile option. Prices start at £219 for the Wifi model.

Microsoft SurfaceThe Surface is Microsoft’s real foray into the tablet market and its distinctive design and keyboard cover wrapped around a 10.6 inch display sounds tempting.

The biggest concern with the Surface is that it runs on Microsoft’s Windows RT – the brand new Windows 8 version, and it won’t run old PC programs, so any trip to the internet to download legacy programs such as VLC Player, or even big-name offerings like Photoshop Elements, just won’t work. Unfortunately neither is it available in a 3G model yet.

We do love its solid feel and integrated kick-stand which allows you to change the viewing angle, and it does offer ample storage with both 32GB or 64GB models available and comes pre-loaded with Office 13. It also has a USB port for greater connectivity – sadly something which is lacking on all the iPad models.

If your primary reason for buying a tablet is for work purposes, this could be the perfect answer, but if that’s not your purpose, then go for one of its competitors.

Amazon Kindle Fire HDThe Kindle has always placed itself as an

affordable tablet and that continues to be the case with Amazon’s latest model.

Featuring a display size of 8.9 inches with a good screen resolution of 1920 x 1200, the Kindle lags behind the iPad4 in terms of display quality and size.

Whilst the Kindle is no slouch, there are major differences when it comes to the photography and video spectrums of the

two tablets. The iPad offers rear and front facing cameras able to record video, whereas the Kindle tablet does not offer a rear-facing camera – only a front-facing camera with 1.3 MP

As a means to watch movies, read books and play apps, the Kindle is great, but when it comes to other basic tablet functions like email, calendar, and multitasking, the Kindle Fire is still way behind other Android tablets and the iPad
