Bahrain...The Jewel in the Middle Eastern Crown
Bahrain (from the Arabic word for "two seas" - itself an inaccurate folk etymology for the much older,
Semitic term, Bahrain) comprises an archipelago of thirty-seven islands in the Persian Gulf, situated close
to the shore of the Arabian Peninsula. The islands are about 24 kms from the east coast of Saudi Arabia and
28 kms from Qatar. Bahrain is next to Saudi Arabia, the largest market in the region that serves as a hub for
services and trade between the Middle East and the rest of the world. Bahrain also lies in the middle of the
oil shipping route between the Middle East and the West.
Bahrain Overview
Bahrain, partly due to its relatively modest hydrocarbon endowments, has long been a pioneer of
economic diversification in the Gulf region. While it was first regional economy to discover oil in 1932, it
also was home to the first oil refinery (1936), as well as industrial ventures such as Aluminium Bahrain
(ALBA, set up in 1968). A significant offshore banking sector emerged in the 1970s and currently Bahrain
is treated as Banking Capital of Middle East.

According to the Central Informatics Organization (CIO)’s 2010 Census, Bahrain’s population grew at a
rapid pace between 2001 and 2010, nearly doubling from 0.66 million to 1.22 million - an annual average
growth rate of 7.4%.

2014 HSBC Expat Explorer Survey results
Bahrain occupies the 5th position out of 34 countries in the overall rank. In expat economics, Bahrain
ranks in the 11th place. As for expat experience, the Kingdom ranks 2nd due to easy commute to work
(1st), existence of work/life balance (1st), feeling welcome at work (2nd), and ability to make friends easily
(2nd). Finally, the Kingdom occupies the 9th position in terms of raising children abroad due to the quality
of child care (3rd) and access to better education (4th).
Equity Markets
Bahrain is an established center of capital market activity. The Bahrain Stock Exchange (BSE), now Bahrain
Bourse (BHB), commenced operations in 1987. according to the Heritage Foundation and Wall Street
Journal 2013 Index of Economic Freedom, Bahrain ranks as the 12th freest economy in the world. In the
Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, Bahrain ranks first. Another index measuring economic
freedom, published by Fraser Institute, ranks Bahrain seventh in the world and first in the MENA region.
Financial Services
Bahrain’s strategic central location within the GCC region provides financial institutions operating in the
Kingdom with easy access to the regional economy, which is worth some USD1.4 Trillion. The region is
characterized by one of the largest concentrations of private and public wealth in the world, and
supported by growing oil and gas industry, the GCC remains critical to the global market for energy.
Bahrain is the oldest financial services center in the Gulf region, having emerged as a major offshore
banking hub in the 1970s. The Kingdom hosts a total of 411 financial institutions (as of May 2013),
diversified over a range of well-established industry sectors, including retail and wholesale banking,
Islamic finance, asset management, and insurance. The government allows 100% foreign ownership in
companies, and provides one of the most favourable taxation regimes both regionally and globally, with
no tax on corporate income and capital gains.
F1 - Bahrain
On April 4, 2004, Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari was first to the chequered flag to win the Bahrain Grand
Prix, the first FIA Formula One World Championship event held in the Middle East. The building of the
Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir was started in 2002 with high domestic interest about the project as
it gave a future to the next generation of Bahraini racers. By the completion of the project, the circuit
became the center of motor sport in the Persian Gulf, as it held many other races such as drag races, GT
races, Formula 3 races and the Australian V8 Supercar series.
