An Introduction
Jeremiah...The Times
Though Josiah’s reforms were good, they left the people’s hearts virtually untouched 3:6-10
The “post-Josiah” throne basically had a disdain for the word of God 22:21 36:23
Religious
“Submit to Babylon” 27:1-12
…bringing you back home” 30:3 31:12
…the coming Messiah” 31:31-34 33:15 cp. Heb 8:8-13
Jeremiah’s Call & God’s Case Against Israel Jer 1-6
Jeremiah had always been in God’s plans 1:5 cp. Gal 1:15
Yet, he was reluctant to serve 1:6
God gave him “authority” over the nations through the words he would speak 1:10 cp. Jn 12:48
God reassures Jeremiah about his mission with 2 visions 1:11-16
An almond tree - God is watching
A boiling pot - God will judge
Jeremiah must “gird his loins” and speak the Lord’s word 1:17 cp. Eph 6:10, 14
God likens Judah’s unfaithfulness to...
…an ox that broke its yoke 2:20
…a persistent adulteress 2:20
…a stain that won’t wash out 2:22
God likens Judah’s unfaithfulness to...

…a thief who is shamed only because he got caught 2:26
Judah was more treacherous than her faithless sister Israel 3:6-11
This is why we are encouraged to study the O.T. cp. Rom 15:4 1 Cor 10:6-12
Though Judah is guilty, God does promise her a glorious future 3:14-18
Yes…God had “deceived” the people 4:10 cp. 2 Thess 2:10-12
However, God would not totally destroy Judah 4:27
A remnant would be allowed to return
Jeremiah was challenged to find 1 righteous man 5:1
Such a failure bears testimony of the people’s hardened condition 5:3
Judah’s unfaithfulness was made worse by wicked priests 5:30-31 cp. 2 Tim 4:3-4
Jeremiah was constantly thwarted by false prophets 6:10-11, 14
The people could no longer blush 6:15
The only solution was to “seek the old path…and walk in it” 6:16
The Way Of Salvation
Jer 7-10
The people had substituted “temple worship” for devotion to God 7:1-11
Such thinking was “deceptive” vv. 4, 8
Such living was “robbery” v. 11
Shiloh offered an historical lesson 7:12-15
Jeremiah was forbidden to pray for Judah 7:16
Judah has been so detestable that only judgment would suffice 7:30 - 8:3
Yet, Judah refused to repent 8:5-6
Jeremiah was deeply saddened at Judah’s apostasy 8:18 - 9:2
Judah “did not know” and thus was ripe for judgment 9:3 cp. 8:7
Judah trusted in her “humanism” 9:23 cp. 1 Cor 1:18-25
Jer 7-10
The only safe ground (“Way of Salvation”) is trust in God 9:24
Idols are helpless 10:1-5
Judah had broken her covenant with God 11:4-5
She gave her word Deut 26:16-19
Now, she stood condemned
She must now suffer consequences 11:11-13
Jeremiah had personal concerns
He was confused re: the prosperity of the wicked 12:1-2
God would tell him, “The worst is yet to come!” 12:5-17
Yet...mercy 12:15
Jehovah likened Judah to a “waistband” 13:1-11
She had become ruined through pride 13:9 cp. Prov 16:18
Jeremiah also applied to Judah a well-known proverb 13:12-14
Jehovah still sought Judah’s repentance 13:15-27
She should have glorified God v. 16
She will have no excuse for her calamities, the shame associated with her suffering vv. 20-23, 26
Drought was the punishment for covenant breaking Deut 28:23f
Conditions were deplorable 14:1-6
Despite Judah’s many sins, Jeremiah pleads for her 14:7-9
God replies He will not forget her sins 14:10-11
Jeremiah argues Judah’s worth, mentions false prophets 14:13

Yes, false teachers will not escape v. 15 cp. 2 Pet 2:1-3, 4-9
Neither will their hearers v. 16 cp. 2 Thess 2:9-12
Jeremiah suffered in his work
He was despised 15:10
He sought deliverance 15:15ff
His pain was “perpetual” 15:18
Yet, God would not abandon him in his work 15:11, 19-21 cp. Heb 13:5b-6
Revelation On Occasion Of Drought Jer 14-17
Judah would be assured of truths when her exile would be done
Idols are not gods at all 16:20
Jehovah is God alone 16:21
Judah must be punished because her sins were deeply engraved in her 17:1
Jeremiah’s Message In Symbols Jer 18-20
1st Symbol: A vessel being made at the potter’s house 18:1-17
The potter is able to re-shape a “marred” or “spoiled” vessel v. 4
So, too, can God remake us vv. 5-10
The same idea is also presented in the N.T. Rom 9:14-24
Judah responds with even more determined rebellion v. 12
Judah’s faithlessness is compared to nature’s faithfulness vv. 13-14
Judah will walk her own “way” & not on God’s path v. 15 cp. 6:16
Jeremiah is again persecuted for proclaiming the Lord’s message 18:18-23
2nd Symbol: A broken potter’s vessel 19:1-13
Jeremiah was to proclaim the great calamities to come vv. 3-9
Jeremiah was to break the vessel, foretelling Judah being “shattered” vv. 10-13

If the king obeys, God will allow the kingdom to remain 22:4

Jehovah will ultimately send the “Righteous Branch” Jer 23:5-6

He will be captured, not slain
The people had disdained God’s will re: slavery of countrymen 34:8-11 cp. Deut 15:12-18

The siege being lifted, the people returned to their wickedness 37:5 cp. 34:21, 11
Thus, God will “release” them from His protection or “liberate” them to destruction 34:12-22

He was even physically mistreated
Zedekiah secretly asks Jeremiah re: a word from the Lord 37:17

Prophecies During Jerusalem’s Siege

Jehovah will undo all the damage His people have done 33:7-9
Immediately fulfilled upon their return from captivity 33:10-11
Ultimately fulfilled in the Messiah’s future kingdom 33:14-18
Prophecies During Jerusalem’s Siege
Jer 21, 34, 37, 32-33, 38-39, 52:1-30
Zedekiah once again sends for Jeremiah 38:14-16
He has personal fears 38:19
Jeremiah advises him to submit to Babylon 38:20-21

The siege finally begins to take its toll on Jerusalem Jer 39
The walls are breached v. 2
Zedekiah flees vv. 4-7 cp. 38:17-18
The city is destroyed v. 8

Prophecies During Gedaliah’s Governorship Jer 40-44
The Lord doesn’t want them to go to Egypt 42:9-12, 15-16
Again, the people do not listen 43:1-7
Jeremiah reminds the Jews an escape to Egypt is doomed Jer 44
Nebuchadnezzar will rule 43:9-10
They have repeatedly rejected the prophets sent by God 44:2-5
Therefore, God punished Judah 44:6
The people now compound their problem by going to Egypt, bowing down to idols again 44:7-10
Jehovah threatens severe wrath if they persist 44:11-14
The people again refuse to heed the Lord’s word 44:15-19
Idolatry is prosperous while Jehovah’s religion is too hard vv. 17-18
Therefore, God “gave them up” 44:25
cp. Rom 1:24ff
Jeremiah’s prophecies from ch. 25 now become more specific

Despite her ambitions, she would lose vv. 7, 10-12
She is called to battle at Carchemish, but will not be victorious vv. 3-4, 5-6
