Letter From the PrincipalNovember 2020
The
WAVE
October was an amazing month for our school! Thank you all for your support during the school’s incredibly successful Turtle Trot which raised over $134,000! And of course, thank you to our PTO who organized this amazing event.
November is my personal favorite month as we usher in some cooler autumn weather and celebrate three things near and dear to my heart: Veterans, books, and family. My older brother is a former Navy SEAL Veteran who served our country in Afghanistan and Iraq. His picture will be displayed on our Veterans Walls in the front of both schools and we invite you to send in photo-copied pictures (no originals please) of your Veterans to celebrate them this month. Just send the picture in with your child and label the picture with the Veteran’s name and where they served. We would be honored to display them in our hallways.
We want to thank Fishman Pediatric Dentistry for their support of our Book Fair which will take place November 2nd- 9th. An amazing selection of high-quality books will be available for our children and families to purchase.
Finally, now is about the time of year I begin to yearn for the smell of pumpkin pie and a turkey in the oven. I’m grateful for our entire school family and wish you all safe travels and blessed time with your family and loved ones for Thanksgiving. Thank you all. Sincerely,
Dr. Gates

We are excited to announce thePVPV/Rawlings Great Books for Readers
Program!
This is a voluntary program for our students who simply love a challenge and who love to read. Research has shown that reading at least 30 minutes per day is correlated with higher student achievement in reading. The Great Books for Readers Program is designed to give students and parents a blueprint of “great books” for their child to read in each grade level. These books are available in our media center. You will find that each grade level list has around 100 books. We are very excited about this program and encourage all of you to participate. Always remember to Work Hard, Be Kind, and Be Awesome!
The goal is for students to read the required number of books on their grade level list to achieve READING SUPERSTARDOM and AWESOMENESS!!! • Students must take the AR quiz to get credit for reading the book. • All reading superstars will have their photo placed in the media center and be invited to attend a special celebration in May. Blessings in a Backpack
If you receive free or reduced lunch, you may qualify for a weekend food supplement
program known as Blessings-in-a-Backpack. This food staple snack bag is given out
weekly throughout the school year. The bag is typically sent home in your child’s
backpack on Friday afternoons.
If you would like to participate or need further information about Blessings in a
Backpack, please contact your building’s counselor, Stacey O’Brien (PV) or Christy
Thacker (Rawlings).
To apply for free or reduced lunch, visit the St. Johns County website at
www.stjohns.k12.fl.us/food/free/. You may also contact the cafeteria manager, Jessica
Peto at 547-8576, for questions related to the application process.
Blessings in a Backpack is a non-profit organization that feeds school children in
the United States who currently are fed during the week on the federally funded
Free and Reduced Meal Program and are at risk of going hungry on the
weekends.
The PVPV/Rawlings Elementary PTO is proud to support Blessings children at
our school throughout the school year. Please help us make sure they are taken
care of during the holidays by helping to provide a Thanksgiving meal. The
signup genius link below has different options for monetary donations that will
directly go to these families to fund their Thanksgiving meal this year. Any
additional funds will be used for the Blessings in a Backpack program throughout
the year to support these children.
Thanks 4 Giving! Sending Thanksgiving blessings to all of our Sea Turtle
Families!

Everyone is doing a great job sending me their ACE transportation changes. It is really appreciated as it makes for a much easier dismissal time and also for picking up your children on time from ACE!! ALL TRANSPORTATION CHANGES SHOULD BE MADE AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE. CHANGES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AFTER 1:45 AND 11:45 ON WEDNESDAY’S. You will have to wait for dismissal and come to the front office to sign them out from ACE. If I do not have notice directly from you that your child will not be going to ACE they will be kept here at ACE.
Please label your child’s belongings so we can put them in their teacher’s mailbox to return to them when found. We cannot allow parents access into the building due to CDC guidelines and the staff does not have time at the end of the day to be searching for lost belongings. Please do not send your child to school with anything expensive or sentimental that will upset them if lost or broken.
Our new 2 hour early release Wednesday is a very long day for students. If possible, try to pick your children up a bit earlier than usual.
REMINDER – ALL PAYMENTS ARE DUE ON THE 10TH OF THE MONTH.
There will be no Enrichment Camps this year. We will keep you updated on any plans for January as the time gets closer.
Wishing you and your family and friends a Happy Thanksgiving. We are so thankful to have such wonderful students and families to work with. Thank you for sharing your children with us!
