Statement from Outgoing Board President Lee Kovac

As your outgoing President of the LJL HOA Board, I would like to thank you the residents of Lake Juliana Landings for your support over the past year. The Board Directors and myself applaud you. Over the past year the Board worked with George Schenk and Ed Kawolik, in trying to help them get us the best overall deal with trash pickup. I want to thank George and Ed for their effort in volunteering to do this for you the residents. The Board also worked extremely hard over the summer, trying to work with Sun Communities in an effort to get yard waste pickup. This was not an easy road, but after collaborating with Cindy Cuthill, our Community Manager, Dawn Roller, Regional VP Sun, Sheri Woodworth, Division VP Sun, Jim Hoekstra, Senior VP Sun, and the LJL Board, it was agreed upon that Sun would give us yard waste pickup one day every other week. This is a trial run for 6 Months and will be reviewed again in February 2020. Thank you Sun Communities and the HOA Board for getting this reinstated for the residents. I would like to thank Cindy Cuthill and her staff for working with the me and the Board on items to make this a better place to live. Although I got off on a rocky start with Cindy, I am glad that it worked out in the end. I look forward for the new President and Board working with Sun to make this the best community it can be. And last but not least, I want to give a big thank you to all of my fellow Board members for their efforts over the past year. Board members Bo Howell, Jan Adams, Sandi Einsla, Marty Erlenbaugh, Joyce Stock, Art Kollasch, and Bob Keene deserve a lot of credit for making me a better President, and for making this a better place for all of the residents in the community. I hope you, the residents, give the new HOA President and Board the same great support that you gave me over the past year. Thank you, Lee Kovac

Statement from our new Board President John Makowski

As your newly elected President of the LJL HOA I want to thank everyone who voted for me to represent you on the Board of Directors. I also want to thank the Board members who elected me as your President. Working hard with the new Board is my upmost objective. We have a great group of people on the Board. You can rest assured our main goal will always be the best interest of LJL HOA in everything we do. We presently have a myriad number of activities planned for 2020. Our Social Directors are working hard to make sure we have activities throughout the year. The calendar is filling up, and we have some very exciting entertainment coming to Lake Juliana Landings (stay tuned). Other club chairpersons are working on activities that will bring HOA members together. As most of you know HOA provides coffee and donuts every Wednesday morning. The meeting portion begins at 9am. However, please arrive early and socialize with your LJL neighbors. During coffee everyone is informed of activities that are planned or taking place. Very informational! As your President I will always try to make Lake Juliana Landings a better place to live. I look forward to seeing you all. Sincerely, John Makowski LJL HOA Board President

Major Retail Stores Coming to the LJL Area

The City of Auburndale has granted a change of land use of the orange grove and pine tree grove abutting Phase II to the north. The land use change from low residential (RL-1) to community Neighborhood Activity Center (NAC) will allow retail stores to be built if zoning is changed also. The LJL HOA Board believes, as well as many residents believe, that construction of grocery, banking, office, doctor, etc. complex would be advantageous to us homeowners. The Board along with our community manager, Cindy Cuthill, appeared before the Planning Commission and expressed our support of the land use and zoning change; however, along with that support it was expressed to the Commission for the need of a sound barrier as well as some construction to protect our homes from trespassers and noise from such a complex. Your Board will continue to monitor the project in the coming months and will keep you informed.

A Message from our LJL Community Manager

The holidays are behind us and the warmer days are coming. We have such a great lifestyle here at LJL and that is because of all of you. The calendar of activities is looking full, and our staff is busy working to keep things clean and the amenities up and running. We will continue to work on community improvements as we move into 2020 and will keep you updated as we do. The well issue we experienced is under control and the change to the lock for the gate to the Maintenance/RV/Storage area seems to be working smoothly. Yard waste pick up has been going well, and a special thank you to all of you who have followed the guidelines to ensure a smooth pickup service. As the days are never the same pace around the office, please know we are here and the door is open for you. If you arrive to find the doors locked, please use the drop box if possible, or leave us a note and someone will reach out to you ASAP. Staff is off the clock for their lunch breaks, and while I would love to say they have a set time it varies depending on what’s happening in the office that day. However, if there is an emergency you can always call the number posted by the door and I will be contacted immediately. Lastly, you see all the development taking place around us and expectations of more to come. With this happening, it is more important than ever to NOT feed the wildlife. We will be monitoring the community and will address issues as needed. All the best for 2020, The LJL Team: CINDY CUTHILL: Community Manager MARY BUTLER: Office Coordinator MICKY DAVIS: Maintenance Technician BARBARA THOMPSON: Part-Time Community TOM THOMPSON: Part-Time Maintenance Technician Support Attendant

LJL NEWS & NOTES

Medical Service Dogs for Veterans I would like to thank everyone at LJL for your generous donations over the last several years. We are still losing veterans due to PTSD; however, we have not lost one veteran who has been gifted a service dog. We will start our giving campaign again this year on the first Wednesday in February at coffee hour, and will continue until the end of the month. As in the past, an anonymous donor will continue to match our donation dollar for dollar. In addition, the company the donor works for will match his donation. So every dollar you give will result in a total $3 donation. Please search your heart. Every dollar counts! Thanks -- Ron Pahl

LJL Book Club

In February the Book Club is reading “I Heard You Paint Houses” by Charles Brandt. This is the true story of the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa. It’s also the story of Frank (The Irishman) Sheeran, who at the end of his life finally confessed to killing his friend. (This is also the basis for the Netflix movie “The Irishman”, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci.) We will be discussing this book on Friday, February 28, at 1pm in the Clubhouse Library. Optional lunch meets at 11:30 at Country Angels in Polk City.

AARP Smart Driver Classroom Course

“Safer driving could save you money!”

The AARP will conduct a Smart Driver course at our LJL Clubhouse on Tuesday, February 11, from 8am to 4pm. In this course you will refresh your driving skills and knowledge of the rules of the road, and discover proven driving methods to help keep you and your loved ones safe on the road. Cost of the course is $15 for AARP members, and $20 for non-members. Completing this course could save you money on your auto insurance! For more information call Jen Ingram (863) 984-1169.

LJL Name Tags Available

You know you met that person before, but don’t remember the name? Well, others besides you have that same problem. Help everyone out by wearing a LJL name tag at park functions. These name tags are attached by magnets rather than pins, so they’re easy to take on and off and don’t damage your clothing. If you’d like to purchase one, see Judy Baker at the Wednesday morning coffee meeting.

LJL SPORTS NEWS (Submitted by June Ostertag)

The LJL Bowling League

As most of you know, the LJL Bowling League bowls every Thursday at Orange Bowl Lanes in Lakeland. There are no teams; we draw for lanes and bowl with different friends and neighbors each week. The cost is $9.00. At the end of the season, we have a Fun Day, Banquet and award prizes. Each bowler is eligible for one prize. We welcome all who would like to give it a try. Be there by 9:15am on Thursday.

In December and January, a couple of our bowlers rolled lifetime high scores: Tom Thompson – 161, 163, 188 512 (High game and series)

Dick Cooper – 134, 153, 167 454 (High series) Floyd Lippold – 139, 231, 152 522 (High game and series)

(Floyd followed it up with a 201 the next week.)

Top bowling scores for December and January: Betty Bosma – 108, 171, 186 465

Lenny Salemme – 225, 246, 215 686

Some other highlights for December and January: Doug Wooley 206; Don James 190; Jim Wilson 189; and Barb Coalson 177

We welcomed new bowlers Dave & Debbie Suty and Bobby Girard to our LJL Fun Bowling League.

Golf News -- A Hole-in-One!

At the Links of Sandpiper on Friday, January 10th, Fred Weary teed up his Callaway ball on the Hole 6 pink tee and pulled out his 9 iron. After a couple of practice swings, he hit his ball. Ken Lally, Tom Thompson, and Tom Armstrong watched as Fred’s ball rolled in the cup for a Hole-in-One! Needless to say, every one in his foursome was cheering. This was Fred’s 4th lifetime hole-in-one! At the end of the round everyone was in the Clubhouse to congratulate Fred for his accomplishment, and to toast him with the round of drinks he bought for everyone. I did hear Fred say he couldn’t afford to have another hole-in-one for a while. Congratulations Fred!
