sparrow flock along the McKenzie River near Blue River, Lane Co., 25 April (TM), 1 visited a feeder in Eagle Point, Jackson Co., 5 May (HS) and 1 was in Phil Hicks' yard in Brookings, 30 May for Curry Co's. first record. Vesper Sparrow 5 were near Corvallis, Benton Co., 13 April (MH & Lisa Hunter) and 1 was near Banks, Washington Co., 4 May (DM). Black-throated Sparrow 1 was in Portland, Multnomah Co., 17 May (Steve Shane) and 2 occurred in the Rogue Valley this spring. 1 was in Lynn Newbry Park, Jackson Co., 5 May (AF) and 1 visited a yard in Eagle Point, Jackson Co., 21 May (HS). Sage Sparrow A vagrant in western Oregon, 1 was at Fern Ridge Reservoir, Lane Co., 27 April (PSh, DH, Don Schrouder). Grasshopper Sparrow A surprising find of a seemingly invisible migrant was Curry Co's. first record at the Pistol River 19 May (DMu). Swamp Sparrow 1 was at Ankenv N.W.R., Marion Co., 2 March (JJ, JG). White-throated Sparrow Many were reported from throughout the region during the entire period (m.ob.). White-crowned Sparrow

Heavy movements were noted from the third week of March to the end of the period (m.ob.), Many of the " gambellii" subspecies (with white lores) were grounded in our region on the way to their breeding grounds in NW Canada and Alaska by the storm on 23 April (HN, m.ob.). Harris ' Sparrow A rarity in southwestern Oregon, a late migrant was at Dorothy Sevens feeders along Hunter Cr. 3 May for Curry Co's. third record (Dorothy Sevey, CD, JB,MS). Lapland longspur Rarely found in our region away from the coast, 1 was along Franklin Rd. northwest of Eugene, Lane Co., 14 March (Dave Brown). A more expected observation was of 3 in breeding plumage at the South Jetty of the Siuslaw River, Lane Co., 5 April (TK). HOODED ORIOLE 1 was photographed at a feeder in Eugene, Lane Co., 28 and 29 April (Francine Delmore fide Clare Watson) for Lane Co's. fourth record. An adult male visited the hummingbird feeders of Helen Warren, Central Point, Jackson Co., for a week until an aggressive male Bullock's Oriole drove it off (photos by HS and Gary Shaffer). This bird apparently spent all of last summer at the same location. Bullock's Oriole First noted 17 April on Sauvies Island, Multnomah Co. (James Davis).

Thanks . . . . I would like to thank the sub-regional editors: Colin Dillingham- Curry Co., Tom Mickel- Lane Co., Harry Nehls-Western Oregon, Howard Sands- Rogue Valley.

From October 1995 to October 1996 the Oregon B i rd Records Commit tee (OBRC) c o m p l e t e d t h e following records.The first group of records are those for w h i c h the w r i t t e n report a n d / o r p h o t o g r a p h s or specimens s u p p o r t e d the stated ident i f i ca t ion and are accepted records. I f photo(s) or specimen is indicated for a record i t was accepted as v e r i f i e d . Other r e c o r d s w e r e a c c e p t e d as s i g h t records.

O f the 60 records rev iewed by the Committee 51 were accepted and 9 were n o t accepted.At the A p r i l 1996 OBRC meet ing the Clay-colored Sparr o w was dropped f r o m the review list. The Commit tee w i l l no longer evaluate Clay-colored Sparrow reports.The fortieth s u p p l e m e n t t o t h e A O U Check-list p u b l i s h e d i n 1996 re instated the Balt imore Oriole as a val id species.There is one accepted record

i n the D e f e r r e d Records f i l e tha t places i t o n the Off ic ia l Oregon Bird List. I t is also placed o n the rev iew list and the OBRC is asking for reports o f this species i n Oregon.

I n f o r m a t i o n presented b e l o w for each species inc ludes l o c a t i o n o f sighting, number of birds, sex and age i f k n o w n , special in format ion (such as col lect ion and museum n u m b e r ) and date(s), in i t ia l of the observer(s) submit t ing w r i t t e n or other evidence for accepted records, and the OBRC record fi le number.The OBRC record file number reads as fo l lows: the first 3 digits are the A O U n u m b e r for the species, the second 2 are the year i n w h i c h the record was observed, and the last numbers are the consecutive numbers for the records as they are filled.

The members of the OBRC for 1996 are T o m Crabtree, Col in Di l l ingham,

Jeff G i l l i g a n , J i m J o h n s o n , L a r r y McQueen, N i c k Lethaby, Craig Roberts, Skip Russell,and O w e n Schmidt. Unusual Behavior of an Adult Bald Eagle at a Communal Roost Tree Randy Ghormley Wildlife Biologist, Paisley RD, P.O. Box 67, Paisley, OR 97636

O n 19 F e b r u a r y 1996 I o b s e r v e d some unusual behavior b y an adult Bald Eagle w h i l e c o n d u c t i n g evening Basin Roost counts f o r the annual N o r t h Lake County Bald Eagle Count. I am sharing this i n f o r m a t i o n since i t may be o f interest to readers o f Oregon Birds and to query other eagle w a t c h e r s as to w h e t h e r t h e y have ever n o t e d anything similar.

Basin Roost counts for m y part icular area are conducted every Monday evening for a 5 w e e k p e r i o d beginn i n g around mid-February and endi n g a r o u n d m i d - M a r c h . E v e n i n g counts involve 2 roost sites,although efforts are concentrated o n 1 p r i m a r y roost area. Both roost trees involve large b r a n c h i n g c o t t o n w o o d s that offer ample p e r c h i n g opportuni t ies

for Bald Eagles. O n this part icular evening, i t had

been raining steadily since m y arrival. E leven B a l d Eagles w e r e a l ready present i n the roost tree w h e n I observed an addit ional adult approaching . Using a 15x45 spott ing scope, I was able to locate the b i r d before i t landed and f o l l o w i t in to the roost tree. However, instead of f l y i n g in to the upper branches where the majori t y o f the perching occurs, this part icular b i r d f l e w to a b o t t o m branch, landed brief ly, and t h e n ro l l ed and h u n g u p s i d e - d o w n w i t h its w i n g s held open i n cormorant style. M y first thoughts w e r e that the b i r d had misjudged its landing and that i t w o u l d soon f l y o f f and correct itself. But i t d i d not . Instead, this b i r d remained i n

this pos i t ion for a f u l l 8 minutes before finally f l y i n g o f f and relanding o n the u p p e r branches.

Perhaps i t is possible that this particular eagle f o u n d this pos i t ion to be an easier w a y to d r y its w i n g s o n a rainy w i n t e r day. Af ter many years of eagle observations, I cannot recall seeing many eagles h o l d their w i n g s o p e n at all , let alone see one i n an ups ide-down pos i t ion . After discussi n g this w i t h o t h e r observers , the same behavior had been noted i n the same roost tree d u r i n g 1995,but only briefly. I f anyone has ever observed this before, or can provide insight into this type o f behavior, I w o u l d be in terested i n hearing about i t . 0

E N G L I S H SPARROWS AS F O O D .

In most localities i n the United States English sparrows are a pest. There is therefore no reason w h y the birds should not be ut i l ized for food i n this country, as they have been i n the O l d W o r l d for centuries. Their flesh is palatable, and though their bodies are small, their numbers fu l ly compensate for their lack of size. Birds that have been trapped may be kept alive in large outdoor cages, sheltered f r o m storms and cold winds, unt i l they are wanted for the table. I t is unprofitable to keep them long, however, as the quantity of grain or other food they require daily amounts to more than half their o w n weight. A variety of food is necessary to keep them i n good condition. Bread, oats, wheat, bran and corn-meal mash, lettuce, cabbage, and tender shots of sprouting grain are some of the things they relish. A supply of clean water is essential.

To k i l l merci ful ly a sparrow that has been trapped, place the thumb nail at the base of its skull and dislocate its neck by hard and quick pressure. To dress, cut o f f the legs, the wings at the outer j o i n t , and the neck close to the body; strip o f f the skin, beginning at the neck; make a cut through the body wal l extending f rom the neck along the backbone t i l l the ribs are severed, then around between the legs to the ta i l , and remove the viscera. I f sparrows are to be broiled, save only the breasts, as this method of cooking so shrivels and parches the lesser parts as to render them worthless. I n this case tear o f f a strip of skin f r o m w i n g to w i n g across the back; grasp the wings, i n front of the body, in one hand and neck i n the other, and by a quick p u l l separate the breast f rom the ribs; turn the breast out o f the skin that covers i t , and sever the wings at the second jo int . The whole operation requires but a fraction of a minute and it can be done by the fingers alone.

Sparrows may be cooked by any of the methods employed for reedbirds or quail . When boned, broiled, buttered, and served on toast they are particularly good and compare favorably wi th the best kinds of small game.

S U M M A R Y .

English sparrows are abundant in most o f the towns i n the United States and in many suburban districts. They are noisy, f i l thy , and destructive. They drive native birds f r o m villages and homesteads. Though they are occasionally valuable as destroyers of noxious insects, all things considered, they do far more harm than good. Practicable methods of dealing w i t h them include destruction of nests, shooting, trapping, and poisoning. O f these, trapping is unquestionably the best. English sparrows are good to eat, and their use as food is recommended because of their nutrit ive value and as a means of reducing their numbers.
