Fellowship, although it is usually expected that candidates will be graduates in geology or an allied subject, or have equivalent qualifications or experience. The two specialist groups are open to all Fellows without additional charge. Enquiries concerning Fellowship of the Society and membership of the specialist groups should sent to the Secretary, Geological Society, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London W1V OJU. All Fellows of the Society are entitled to receive for their subscription either of the Society's two journals, the Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology or the Journal of the Geological Society. On payment of an additional sum of s on the annual subscription, members may obtain copies of both journals.

The scope of the journal, within the fields of hydrogeology and engineering geology, is widely drawn. The journal is open to contributions from Fellows and non-Fellows of the Society, in this country and overseas. Papers will be considered which deal with any of the subjects within the field of geology as applied to civil engineering, mining practice, and water resources, including rock mechanics, soil mechanics and geotechnics; applied sedimentology, pedology, mineralogy and petrology; geohydrology and hydrogeology; engineering seismology and the engineering application of geophysics.
Case histories and review articles of a more general character will also be considered, particularly if these are of a timely nature. It will be editorial policy occasionally to group several related papers together in the same issue.

(~ The Geologica l Society, L o n d o n 1981 Cover Illustration The cover shows part of the Dharan-Dhankuta mountain road in E. Nepal, being built with British aid, which traverses the front two ranges of the Southern Himalayan foothills. This 4-krn long hairpin section is adjacent to the main Himalayan boundary fault. Bedrock comprises severely fractured, lightly metamorphosed sandstones and phyllites, mantled by transported granular soils which are susceptible to widespread erosion and landsliding during monsoon rainstorms. Extensive use has been made of gabion structures for road support, cut slope protection and erosion control. Consulting Engineer: Rendall, Palmer & Tritton; Managing Contractors: Property Services Agency, Department of the Environment, UK.
C.N.S ELECTRONICS The PUNDIT Ultrasonic Test equipment has been suc- cessfully used in the investigation of ultrasonic propaga- tion characteristics of rocks under uniaxial compression.
The photograph illustrates the Pundit itself, a P&S Wave transducer (1 MHz-2" diameter) capable of sustaining loads of 220 kN (22 tons). By means of the switch unit, time of flight for either shear or compression waves may be read out on the Pundit. In addition, the wave form may be studied simultaneously by employing the CRO output from the Pundit and if attenuation measurements are desired, the Add-on CRO Unit with built in compres- sion attenuators, may be connected to the equipment.
Additionally, a 100 ton, compression wave, transducer (54 kHz of 4" diameter) is also available. In the inset, the shear wave is displayed, and in the photograph itself, the compression wave.
CNS are indebted to Professor Michael S. King of the Department of Geological Science of the University of Saskatchewan for the original concept of these transducers.

Geological Background to Fossil Man Special Pub l i ca t ion o f the Geologica l Soc ie ty , N u m b e r 6 edi ted by the late W.W. Bishop
Recent research in the Gregory Rift Valley in East Africa has been concerned with palaeon- tological and archaeological problems and it has included some remarkable hominid dis- coveries. This important book describes the broad structural, volcanic and geophysical aspects of the area, and gives an outline of the history and the development of the Valley. The text provides detailed regional studies of four sections of the Gregory Rift, and includes an account of the setting of the next hominid discoveries in Afar.
Outline of Contents: Frameworks: structural- volcanic-geophysical; Background: palaeonto- logical and archaeological problems; Regional studies in the Gregory Rift Valley: Olduvai Gorge and Laetolil, Tanzania; Olorgesailie, Kenya; The Lake Baringo Basin, Kenya; The Lake Turkana (Rudolph) Basin, Kenya and Ethiopia; The Afar area, Ethiopia.

Terrain Analysis and Remote Sensing Edited by Z R. G. Townshend The purpose of this book is to present an authoritative view of the role of remote sensing techniques in the analysis of terrain and land resources. The treatment of remote sensing indicates that these techniques are adding significantly to the systematic monitoring and intelligent forecasting of land resources.
