QART members elect their new executive.

Forty-eight QART regular members attended the Annual General Meeting last May 30th in the Pius X Library. The two main items on the agenda were the election of a new executive for the next two years and the presentation of the treasurer’s report and auditor’s report. Also, on the agenda was the naming of an auditor for the 2018-2019 year.

The one change on the executive is the replacement of Pat Griffin as treasurer by Steve Dursa. This is Steve’s second tour of duty as Treasurer, having been QART treasurer about nine years ago. Because of this, Steve can no longer continue as our auditor, a role he has filled for the past two years. Welcome again, Steve.

And what about Patrick Griffin? After six years as treasurer, Pat has decided to take a break. Pat is not saying goodbye. He still intends to be an active QART member and has accepted to be QART auditor for 2018-2019. He was named as such at the AGM. Many thanks to Patrick for his many years of service to QART.

To wrap it up, Pat and Steve have switched positions.

So When is Our Next Meeting?

Our next meeting is on Wednesday, September 12th at 10:30 A.M. in the Pius X Library. There will be a lunch service after the meeting in the Pius Culinary Dining Room. More details can be found on p.3 of this newsletter.

We have now started collecting the membership dues for 2018-2019. This is a really important time for us. It’s also a time for finding new members. Happy Summer

So what have we been doing since our last newsletter?

Since our last newsletter, we’ve gone to the Casino de Montreal for a buffet lunch and a live entertainment show, we’ve had our Spring Fling luncheon at Pius Culinary, and held our Annual General Meeting in the Pius Library along with another luncheon in the Pius dining room.

The real highlight was the Casino show on April 11th. It was exceptionally good. The show featured Doo Wop music from the 50’s and 60’s. The songs brought back a lot of happy memories. It featured a band with a quartet singing group: Yannick, Don, Nico, & David. All who attended had a good time singing along with the band and even getting up and dancing in the aisles. Twenty-five members and guests attended. Terry Dunn won the one door prize, free admission to the event.

It was an exceptionally long winter this year. Spring only really arrived in May appropriately timed to coincide with the QART Spring Fling. It was held on May 2nd. Fifty-one QART members and guests attended the Spring Fling, which featured a full course meal with appetizer,

dessert, coffee/tea, plus a glass of wine. There were four door prizes. Bernice Antonecchia won a beautiful arrangement of potted flowers. The three bottles of wine, red, white, and rosé, suitably gift-wrapped, were won by Carol Grigelis, Ruby Wood, and Cécile Doucet-Greene.

On May 30th, we took care of the association’s business at our Annual General Meeting in the Pius Library. Forty-eight members attended, electing a QART executive to a two-year term, scrutinizing QART finances, hearing the President’s report, and talking about other important items such as group health nsurance.

After that, fifty members and guests went down for the lunch service in the dining room. The meal was subsidized by QART as a show of appreciation to its members for their participation in the AGM. Regular and honorary members paid only $15 each for their full-course repast. Door prize winners of the three bottles of wine were Joe Civitarese, Rose Anne Lashchuk, and Herb Treffeisen.

THE QART SEPTEMBER GENERAL MEETING

QART’s first general meeting of the new 2018-2019 year will take place in the St. Pius X library on Wednesday, September 12th, at 10:15 A.M.

The main items on the agenda are membership registration and a report presenting the QART calendar of events for 2018-2019. A table will be set aside for the QART book exchange. After the meeting, at 11:30 A.M., members are invited to partake in the lunch service provided in the Pius Culinary Dining Room. The lunch service consists of an appetizer, full-course meal, dessert, tea or coffee. The regular cost of the lunch is $20, but for regular and honorary QART members who have participated in the general meeting, the cost is only $15 each. Tax and tip are included. Members will pay for their lunch as they enter the library for the general meeting.

In order to benefit from this offer, please contact Annie Schaffhauser ([email protected] or 514-374-1549) on or before Tuesday, September 4th, to tell us if you will be attending the AGM and Pius Culinary lunch service. We finalize our numbers with Pius X on Wednesday, September 5th. The seating capacity in the dining room is 60. We cannot go over this number.

RECENT CHANGES AT QPAT PAUL BARNES RETIRES. JEAN-PAUL FOSSEY REPLACES MR. BARNES

You may not be aware that Paul Barnes has retired from QPAT this past spring. Mr. Barnes was in charge of the retiree group insurance at QPAT. QPAT has since named Jean-Paul Fossey to take over Mr. Barnes’ dossiers including that of group retiree health and travel insurance.

QART has sent a letter of congratulations to Mr. Fossey on his new position. At the same time, QART also took advantage to write in that letter to Mr. Fossey the following about the recent changes to the travel insurance provisions.

QART is always concerned about changes in the QPAT group health insurance policy for retirees. We are willing and available to consult with QPAT on matters of group insurance and expect that QPAT would be interested in our opinion on these matters. ….. Many QART members have voiced their dissatisfaction to us about the recent changes made to the travel insurance coverage in the retired teachers policy. I believe that many as well have complained to Paul Barnes and to QPAT. The dissatisfaction lies with the new 90-day limit for coverage. ‘An absence whose expected length is less than 90 consecutive days is covered. If the absence is expected to exceed 90 days, there is no coverage under this benefit during the entire absence.’ Some of our members have already seen their claims refused because these claims occurred on a trip whose expected length was more than 90 days, even though the claims occurred within the first 90 days of that trip. The general opinion expressed by these members was that every trip, no matter how long, should be covered for the first 90 days and that after that, provision should be made to allow for the purchase of complementary travel insurance, whether from Industrial Alliance or some other provider.

Mr. Fossey wrote in reply that he noted QART’s position and that he had also received similar criticisms from other groups as well. So we are not alone. I do not know if the criticism has made QPAT consider to revise these changes. I only know that QPAT realizes that there is discontent among retirees about the insurance policy. My recommendation is that you continue to voice your complaints to QPAT.

Direct your complaints to Jean-Paul Fossey. His email address is ‘[email protected]’. He can also be reached at the QPAT phone number, 514-694-9777.

Best regards,John Greene.

Q.A.R.T. (QUEBEC ASSOCIATION OF RETIRED TEACHERS)

QART is a provincial association for retirees who worked at some time in Quebec for an English school, or an English school board, or the English sector of a confessional school board. As retirees, we enjoy socializing, but we are also concerned about our pensions, our health care, and our living conditions. Until 1997, when we renewed our by-laws and became chartered, we were known then as the Provincial Association of Catholic Retired Teachers which had been founded in 1965.

As a member of our Association, you will have the opportunity to participate in our social activities. You will also be informed through our newsletter about issues such as our pensions, health insurance, medicare, the cost of living and other topics that affect our living conditions. Further, you will be able to express your opinion on these topics at our general meetings. In addition to this, QART operates a website designed to facilitate member awareness about current issues. QART also distributes information to its members via e-mail.

When you join QART, you are joining a provincial association that is affiliated with the Canadian Association of Retired Teachers. You become a member of ACER-CART. Being affiliated to ACER-CART gives QART a forum for issues of national importance and provides QART with a powerful national lobby group of more than 128,000 members.
