Summary: Sent to an orphanage at age 9, Beth develops an uncanny knack forchess and a growing dependence on the green tranquilizers given tothe children.

The episode begins in Paris 1967 with Beth Harmon in her apartment popping pills and drinking.Interestingly, these little spirit bottles take the place on a chess board.

As she heads downstairs, Beth keeps her composure as numerous cameras strobe to herpresence. Sitting opposite her rival, the two prepare to play. As she looks the man in the eye, flashbacks from the past show a young 9 year old Beth surviving a horrific car accident on abridge.

This is where we begin our story, as orphaned Elizabeth is driven up to an orphanage whereshe’s shown around and introduced to the teachers. And resident party mouth Jolene.

Miss Deardorff tells Beth that faith will help elevate her and give the girl a better life thanshe otherwise would have had. This starts with her hair being cut (symbolically cutting away theold).

Beth immediately gravitates towardJolene who asks what her parents’ lastwords were ("close your eyes") and de-cides to lie and tell the girl she doesn’tremember. Lining up, she takes the pillsgiven by Mr Fergussen and immediatelyfeels spaced out. Lying in bed, fur-ther flashbacks reveal more about Beth’stroubled past.

Beth is kept in a trailer outside in themiddle of nowhere. Paul does his best topersuade Alice — Beth’s Mother — to stopthis but it’s no good. One lingering glanceto Beth is enough before he drives awayfor good.

Back in the past, Beth heads down to the basement and cleans erasers after completing herexams in record time. Only, while down there she notices a man named Mr Shaibel playing chessand struggles to keep her mind off that. She even sees a chessboard materialize in her room.

An attempt to convince this man to teach her also draws up blanks too... at least to begin with. After demonstrating her knowledge, Mr Shaibel allows her to play. She’s immediately outmatchedand beaten by the "Scholar’s Mate."

That evening, Beth’s collected up pills allow her to see the pieces on the ceiling above her. She’s again schooled though, leading to an eventual breakthrough as she beats Mr Shaibel sometime later.

Realizing she may be the real deal, Shaibel continues to teach her different formations andvariations. All the while, Beth stores up her green pills to take in the evening. She even learnsthe Queen’s Gambit.

Her talent is uncanny, and he’s astounded by what Beth’s managed to learn. Shaibel handsover a book for chess moves and admits it’s the best book for her.

The next day, she takes up the usual position in the basement but is introduced to Mr Ganzfrom the chess club. After beating him, he’s clearly impressed and asks how she practices. "Inmy head... on the ceiling," She says nonchalantly. With two chessboards set up, she beats bothShaibel and Ganz, even going so far as to work out the moves in advance of them occurring.

Although she’s a massive success, invited along to the high school to play on Thursdays, she’sno longer given the green pills she so badly depends on. Not only that, she also isn’t allowed togo in the basement either.

Despite her initial withdrawal symptoms, Beth manages to outplay every single person at thechess club, constantly beating each player. Charles Levy — the best in the class — is even beatenin an astonishing 15 moves.

Despite her brilliance, Beth’s dependence on green pills see her break into the pharmacy backat the orphanage to collect them up. Armed with a screwdriver, she breaks the lock and startsstealing the pills — gobbling them up like candy. With the jar in her hand, Beth collapses afteroverdosing as all the teachers and students catch her in the act.

Summary: Suddenly plunged into a confusing new life in suburbia, teenage Bethstudies her high school classmates and hatches a plan to enter a chesstournament.

The episode begins with Beth more deter-mined than ever to memorize the SicilianDefence. Only, that’s problematic givenshe’s been banned from playing chess.

Time passes and we skip forward tofind a 13 year old Beth hanging aroundwith Jolene at the orphanage. Up atthe window, she looks out and noticestwo guests arriving for her. She’s themodel girl at the orphanage but that’s allabout to change now that Beth has beenadopted. Just before she goes, Mr Shaibelwatches from the doorway.

Leaving the orphanage, Beth’s plungedinto this strange world with Allston and

Alma Wheatley. Although things look good on the surface, Allston is wrapped up in work withconstant business trips. This inevitably causes tensions between him and Alma.

She destresses by playing the piano though, which Beth comments she’s very good at. It’s apipe dream, as life goes, and Alma’s miscarriage brings up painful memories of what could havebeen.

Elizabeth stats school but immediately finds herself isolated from the other girls. Even worse, they don’t have a chess club there either, replaced instead by the Apple Pi club.

Well, the next port of call is clothes shopping after school. With Mr Wheatley returning forthe night, she and Alma head out. On the way though, she notices a chess set. Given 40 centsallowance a week, Beth’s encouraged to save up to buy it herself.

After running an errand for Alma, Beth steals a chess magazine from the local conveniencestore and feels a burst of excitement over the future. Only, this is unfortunately short-lived dueto money problems with the family.

Alma is unhappy with the idea of Beth working, ("Only colored girls your age work!" She ex-claims) causing Beth to turn toward Mr Shaibel instead. There’s an upcoming chess tournamentbut the entry fee is $5. If she wins, the prize is $100.

She receives a reply from Mr Shaibel in the mail with the cash attached — but that’s not all.Alma’s new medication happens to be the same green tranquility pills she had in the past. Bethinevitably takes a pill or two and enters the chess tournament. Her first opponent is a womannamed Annette Packer who she sweeps aside with ease.

With time to kill, she joins the growing list of people watching Beltik (an aspiring Grandmaster)play. After an impressive victory, Beth has one of her own — managing to hit the undefeated listafter 4 wins in a row.

Her fifth match however, is a different caliber of opponent. She beats Townes and gathersquite the crowd, who hear him tell her she’s "quite something."

After the game, Annette finds Beth in the bathroom who’s just had her first period. After someencouraging words of wisdom, Beth continues on before facing her final opponent Beltik in thefinal.

While things are looking up for Beth with chess, at home thing are anything but stable.Alma’s addiction to the green pills sees the home trashed and in disarray. All of that stems fromMr. Wheatley being stuck out working indefinitely. Together, the girls decide to lie about theirsituation while Alma promises to try and be a good Mother to her.

The day of the final arrives and Beth faces up against Beltik, who arrives late and arrogantlyyawns. Beth is determined to beat him though.

Although things go badly to begin with, she pops a green pill in the bathroom and composesherself. Beltik refuses to go down without a fight and although Beth has the match won, theyplay out to its conclusion.

The win sees Beth crowned state champion and brings home the $100 prize. Alma is im-pressed and agrees to let her open a bank account.

With the winnings, Beth heads back to the department store and buys up a whole stack ofchess books — and the chessboard she’s been eyeing up. As she starts unpacking, Alma onlyhas eyes for the money and books Beth up for a new tournament in Cincinnati.

Summary: The trip to Cincinnati launches Beth and her mother into a whirlwindof travel and press coverage. Beth sets her sights on the U.S. open inLas Vegas.

The episode begins with glimpses ofBeth’s past, including her Mother head-ing out to the lake and going swimming. It’s a joyous occasion and one that sees abig grin cross Beth’s face as her Motherembraces her. The sound of a tickingclock echoes in the background, snap-ping her back to reality.

Back in the present we’re in Cincin-nati 1963 as Beth and Alma arrive attheir pleasant room and prepare forthe chess tournament to come. Beth’swell-known there as the Kentucky StateChamp. She beats her opponents withease and Alma even turns up to watch.

Matt and Mike show up as familiar faces too, eventually heading out for dinner with Alma.Beth has one eye on the US Open though as she continues to compete in tournaments acrossthe US. She certainly doesn’t have time for any romance or relationship issues right now.

For Christmas Beth and Alma head to the spa where Beth decides she needs to learn Russian. Before that though, she’s interviewed by a reporter from Life magazine back home. Ignoring herstruggles, the reporter instead comments on her future resting on a knife-point. There’s a thinline between creativity and madness.

This interview — and subsequent article in the magazine — sees Beth begin to gain quite thecrowd but also a lot of fame solely for being a girl.

7

Page 12: The Queen’s Gambit Episode Guide - INAF

The Queen’s Gambit Episode Guide

Beth is then invited along to a pledge party with the girls from school; the same girls whooriginally bullied and shunned her. She immediately feels out of place, realizing they’re onlyinterested in boys and music.

Beth decides to take her leave, but not before eyeing up the alcohol on the counter. Thisseemingly starts up that same heady cocktail of booze and pills we’ve seen at the start of episode1.

3 years pass and we pick back up with Beth in Las Vegas, 1966. There, she meets Townes andthey discuss their changing fates. Townes is now working as a magazine reporter and she agreesto follow him up to his room to play chess and snap photos. There’s obvious sexual chemistrybetween them but it’s interrupted by Townes’ roommate Roger Dione arriving.

Tensions between Alma and Beth begin to simmer up too, with the former drinking andencouraging Beth to do the same. That evening Beth talks about her tournament, including herfeelings toward US champion Benny Watts. He constantly has a crowd around him and certainlyknows his stuff.

Later that day, Beth runs into Benny himself who discusses game strategy. Specifically, aweakness in Beth’s game. The previous player she faced, a boy called Murphy, could have beatenBeth. This revelation certainly rattles her but she soon settles down after popping another greenpill.

The match with Benny begins and Beth keeps a cool demeanor. Inside though she panics, eventually leading to her first loss. Despite this though, she still gets a share of the prize money. While the money is all Alma cares about, the game and her losing is what Beth dwells on.

Just before Beth leaves Las Vegas, Townes hurries after her and admits that she’ll haveanother chance to face Benny in the future. Holding Alma’s hand, she and Beth drive away insilence as they reflect on what may have been.

Summary: Russian class opens the door to a new social scene. In Mexico City,Beth meets the intimidating Borgov, while her mother cozies up witha pen pal.

The episode begins with Beth learningRussian, undeterred by her previous loss. After this game, she heads out with someguys from her Russian club, phoninghome to let Alma know she’s staying thenight.

That leads to her first sexual en-counter but it’s not exactly memorable. When she wakes up, everyone ’s gone toCincinnati to watch a movie so she de-cides to get some booze (and a handyspliff left by the guys there). She phoneshome and promises Alma not to get preg-nant as she continues to drink.

Time passes and Beth graduates fromhigh school. As a gift, Alma gets her a bracelet with "To Beth, Love Mother." The pair sit together, with Beth preparing for an upcoming trip in Mexico.

Alma tags along too and on the plane admits the real reason she’s going. It turns out she hasa pen pal in Mexico City called Manuel and he’s meeting them at the airport.

Alma continues to act as moral guidance for Beth but she’s more a devil than an angel onher shoulder. She tells Beth not to study endlessly and encourages the girl to head out and relaxbefore her big game.

This brings back memories of the past with Mr Shaibel as he discusses the ups and downsof her gift. Despite being extremely gifted at chess, she also has a lot of anger pent up inside

9

Page 14: The Queen’s Gambit Episode Guide - INAF

her. This appears to be as a consequence of what happened to her parents and the constantdisappointment of potential Father figures leaving in her life.

The big day comes and Beth continues her winning streak. While Alma and Manuel growcloser together, the anger in Beth continues to rise up. Interspersed around these various chesswins are intriguing images of Beth underwater.

Water is symbolically the sign for emotion and being so far underwater appears to hint at Bethbeing consumed by that aforementioned anger. It’s a wonderful visual motif and one that backsup how aesthetically striking this series is.

The tournament continues and Alma eyes up Borgov as he walks past. Beth has bigger fish tofry though as she’s matched up to the young Gregiv. Their match plays out across 5 hours andthey’re forced to reconvene in the morning. Small talk about drive-ins do little to quell her desireto win, and the following day she does just that.

However, she interestingly uses distractions as a way of throwing Gregiv off his game. It’s atactic that’s been used again her numerous times (Beltik’s yawning, the hair parting etc.) andone that sees Gregiv bemoan his mistakes on reflection.

The pair sit and talk, specifically about aspirations for Gregiv being Chess Champion. Bethadmits he’s the best she’s ever played. "Until you play Borgov," Gregiv mutters as our chessprodigy walks away.

Meanwhile it’s the same old story for Alma as Manuel leaves for work and she’s alone again. She does manage to gain quite the audience though when starts playing the piano again. Thesemoments are overshadowed though by Borgov talking about Beth in the elevator.

Specifically, they comment on Beth’s tenacity to win and being unable to lose at any cost. This is the same for Borgov too but for a very different reason.

Thankfully Matt and Mike are there to fill Beth in on exactly who these intimidating men are.Eventually the match begins and Borgov, known as the Master of the Sicilian, begins his gameplan. While the moves slowly go back and forth, each strategizing against the other, Alma isnoticeably absent.

Beth channels this anger into her game-playing but it’s no good. She’s outplayed and thrownoff her game by Borgov. She resigns, after seeing Mr Shaibel face again in her place, and headsback upstairs to tell her Mother the bad news. Only, she doesn’t respond.

As she looks over, Beth realizes that Alma is dead. The liquor bill for the room is extortionateand it seems Alma died of hepatitis. The hotel agree to cover her bill and even agree to call Allstonin Denver to let him know. He’s completely apathetic to the whole situation though, as Beth findsherself alone again.

Summary: Back home in Kentucky, a shaken Beth reconnects with a former op-ponent who offers to help sharpen her game ahead of the U.S. Cham-pionship.

The episode begins with sound advicefrom Alice toward a young Beth. She tellsher daughter she needs to take care ofherself as one day she will be all alone.

As rain lashes down, a taxi pulls upback at Beth’s family home. Only, it’s nolonger a family given she’s alone afterAlma’s death. Not long after, she receivesa call from Harry Beltik offering condo-lences and the prospect of training for theupcoming contest against the Russians.Mulling it over, she decides to invite himover to help.

And help he does. He talks about heranger and how it’s making Beth narrow-

minded and only seeing what’s in front of her. Midway through talking, Beth flirts a little over histeeth being fixed up and he takes his leave. Flustered, he agrees to head back in the morning.

While he’s gone, Beth decides against going to bed and instead curls up on the sofa with ablanket and that familiar chatter from TV that Alma found so comforting.

In the morning, Harry returns and encourages her to do some homework on Borgov, especiallygiven he’s a world champion. As Harry heads to the bathroom to compose himself, he notices thegreen pills in her bathroom and expresses concern. He keeps it quiet for now while Beth takeshis advice and starts looking into Borgov, understanding exactly what he’s capable of.

Beth eventually uses her initiative and invites Harry to stay with her. As he leans forwardand kisses her, the two eventually hook up. Beltik admits that he got his teeth fixed up for herand wanted to wait for her to come back. Beth interrupts him though and changes the subject, unwilling to even entertain the notion of romance right now.

Given chess is all she knows, Harry instead asks her to play. She berates his slow playingstyle though, prompting him to call her "too sharp" and walk away. Things are clearly tense

between them and it eventually leads to Harry packing up his things and leaving. He’s got tostart studying soon. After teaching Beth everything he knows, there’s nothing else he can teach.

Before he goes, Beltik drops the pill bottle on the side and tells her to be careful. It’s a starkwarning and one that she carries with her to the US Championship in Ohio, 1967. There, sheruns into Benny Watts again.

As the days tick by, a slick montage ensues as both Benny and Beth play their way into thefinal together. While Benny talks to reporters as a way of stroking his ego, Beth continues to readup on tactics in between studying.

Benny eventually catches up to Beth one evening and encourages her to play a game of speedchess with him — with $5 on the line. For Beth though, it’s another loss... followed by anotherand another. The pair continue to play while Beth continues to become more and more angry.

Beth is humbled by the repeated losses and it eventually leads to the inevitable — Bennyand Beth are facing each other in the final. He apologises for the speed chess gig and admits hewasn’t trying to hustle her. Just before playing, he also admits to playing out the chess gamesinside his head too.

Speed chess is very different to a normal game though, and slick editing sees one move playout on-screen before cutting to Beth and Benny drinking together in the bar and reflecting ontheir previous game.

It turns out Beth has been invited along to the Moscow Invitational following her win. Beforethat though, Benny encourages her to join him in New York for some training. Oh and sex iscompletely off the table of course.

Summary: After training with Benny in New York, Beth heads to Paris for herrematch with Borgov. But a wild night sends her into a self-destructivespiral.

The episode begins with another lessonfor Beth as Alice tells her how to sur-vive in the future. This inevitably sees uscut forward to Beth and Benny driving to-gether, playing mental chess and practic-ing their Russian on their way up to NewYork.

Eventually they make it to their run-down accommodation but it’s certainlyfar cry from what Beth has been used toat the Wheatley household. Still, she set-tles in with her blow-up bed and Benny’stelling shoulder touches.

Benny’s friends arrive not long afterand as drinks start flowing, Beth tellingly

chooses not to touch the liquor. At least not yet anyway.Instead she starts playing Benny and the others at speed chess. This time though, Beth

completely outplays them and manages to bag herself a fair amount of money. "Well kid, I thinkyou’ve got it," He says, impressed with her wins.

On the back of this, Beth winds up sleeping with Benny. Afterward, he gives her some adviceabout how to beat Borgov. Only, she’s not happy that he’s thinking about this now — especiallygiven it’s literally moments after they finished making love.

We then cut forward to Paris 1967 as we see Beth preparing for her rematch with Borgov.Between games she continues to read up on tactics and play styles. Eventually this sees her

through to the final with the Grand Master himself. Only, Cleo shows up and invites her out fora drink.

There, Beth admits that her real lost love is Townes whom she continues to think about tothis day. This catches us up to the moments at the start of episode 1, as we see Beth preparingfor her rematch with Borgov while Cleo sleeps in.

She’s clearly not thinking straight though and constantly drinks water to try and drown outher hangover. As she does, she draws on fragments of Benny’s influence from the past.

Borgov’s constant stares are unnerving too and eventually Beth is forced to resign once more.Rumours that Beth was drunk (well, hungover) spread on the back of this though, as she startsto descend and heads back to Lexington.

Beth’s lawyer, Dick Chennault, rings and it turns out Allston has changed his mind. Beth isno longer welcome in the house and he’s decided to sell up.

When he heads over to confront her, Beth more than matches him. She calls Allston out onhis bluffs about selling and agrees to buy the house off him. Only, him denouncing her as hisdaughter is a tough price to pay.

Beth receives a call from an organization known as Christian Crusade who are happy to payfor her plane ticket across to Russia and compete with the USSR. They believe it’ll be a win forJesus over the communists. Beths gets on the phone to Benny after this offer, where he tooencourages her to take up the deal.

Alone, Beth continues her downward spiral, drinking wine from the bottle and heading out todrink whiskey on the rocks. Back home she receives a call from Beltik but ignores it in favour ofdancing, drinking and reliving painful memories from the past.

Eventually Beltik arrives at her door and calls out for Beth. He’s worried about her but she’sdistracted by a call asking to come in for a photo op at Henry Clay High School.

Beth shows up but she’s clearly not of sane mind. Her eyeliner is uneven, she’s not thinkingstraight and smells of booze. As fate would have it, she runs into Anette Packer — the first personshe beat in that tournament all those years ago. She’s hung up her chess-board now and movedon to greener pastures.

Heading outside for a cigarette, Beth runs into Beltik again who admits that he’s worriedabout her. He’s assistant manager in the supermarket she’s been frequenting and admits sheneeds help. The one thing that really hits home though is when he mentions his Father and howhe was a drunk as well.

It hits hard, sending Beth home where Jolene suddenly shows up at the door. If there’s oneperson who knows about destructive behaviour it’s her!

Summary: A visit from an old friend forces Beth to reckon with her past andrethink her priorities, just in time for the biggest match of her life.

The episode begins with our usual forayinto the past again as Alice finds Paul athis new house. He’s less than pleased tosee her though and tells the woman toleave. This catches us up to the momentsof Alice driving along the road with herdaughter.

Back in the present, Jolene revealswhy she’s really there. Mr Shaibel haspassed away and there’s a funeral up-coming. She wants Beth to attend butcan’t help but look at the state of herhouse. Jolene is a paralegal now too, hav-ing fixed herself up from the orphanagedays, and clearly turned her life around.

Beth meanwhile realizes she needs to do the same with hers. Before that though, the pair head on a road trip to visit Beth’s old hangout spots. The first is

her old trailer she shared with Alice. It’s pretty run-down and this inevitably leads them on tothe orphanage.

Flashes from the past are too much though, and Beth decides not to head in. Instead, shegoes to Mr Shaibel’s funeral where she feels bad for owing him 10 dollars.

After the service, Beth changes her mind and heads back to the place she spent most of herchildhood. Miss Deardoff tells her to get back to the chapel while Beth politely agrees and headsdown to the basement.

There, she finds a big pin-up board with all of her newspaper clippings, pictures and momentsthrough her young life. It’s a touching tribute but one that sees the picture of Mr Shaibel andBeth together as the highlight of this collage.

It’s all too much for her to bear and Beth breaks down crying in the car with Jolene. Backhome, the Christian Crusade ladies head over but Beth shuns their beliefs and decides to giveback what they’ve spent on her so far.

With nowhere else to turn, Beth rings Benny and asks for money. He’s having none of itthough, especially after she ditched him in New York, and eventually tells her not to ring again.

Beth manages to hustle up enough funds to get across to Russia though, and just before shegoes receives some words of wisdom from Jolene.

Russia is very different from what Beth has experienced previously. She’s told to stay in herhotel and forbidden from speaking to anyone else. Beth wins her first game and sticks to therules — for the most part anyway. She signs autographs on her way out and does her best to fitin alongside the other players.

Her isolation there doesn’t affect her too much though — after all this is something she’sexperienced all her life. She remains in-form and beats her competitors one by one.

Back at the hotel she notices that her opponent is liaising with Borgov — hinting back at thatcomment Benny made about the Russians playing together. Beth does her best to study just ashard and it pays off too. She beats him the next day as the man marvels at her talent, going onto call her the best chess player he’s ever played against. Taking a bow, she beats her secondopponent too but it all builds up to exhaustingly long, mentally-taxing games.

Finally the big day arrives and all eyes are on Borgov and Harmon as they fight it out on thechess board. Wooden clacks echo across the walls as the crowd remain captivated by the gameplayed out before them. Midway through though, Borgov decides to adjourn.

With the world watching on, Beth tries to remain modest despite her agent’s insistence to talkto the press. On the way out she mentions Shaibel and what an influence he’s been on her andimplores them to print the story.

Just before she leaves though, a familiar face from the past shows up. It’s Townes! He askswhether she’s there alone and she throws her arms around him. Together they discuss theirdiffering fates in life. Beth mentions her pills and worries that she won’t be able to without them.

Thankfully Townes convinces her that she doesn’t need them. After all, she’s getting alongfine without them right now. needed to survive.

As another sign of good news, Harry, Benny and all the boys phone through from New York togive her tips and strategies on how to beat Borgov. With all the brilliant minds collected together,Beth uses all this knowledge as she prepares to go in for her big night.

Borgov goes completely off-script but Beth finally understands she doesn’t need the pillsanymore to harness her power. She sees the board on the ceiling without the pills for the firsttime.

As they keep playing, Borgov asks for a draw. The commentator believes she should settle butBeth solemnly shakes her head.

Despite Borgov’s amazing run in the end-game, she refuses to go down. A smile crossesBorgov’s face as he looks her in the eye. "The game is yours," He proclaims, beaming as Bethsends the crowd into rapturous applause.

In the wake of this, the win brings back a wave of publicity to America where Beth is invitedalong to play chess with the President. Instead, Beth stops the car and decides against goingback to America for now.

She instead walks among the various chess players in the park and revels in the suddenacclaim she receives from the men and women there. Sitting at the table, she’s encouraged toplay chess, which she agrees to do.
