APRIL 2017
THE QUILTERS
QUILL Board Meeting April 6, 2017 Business Meeting April 13, 2017 www.twinriversquiltersguild.com
From the President
Don’t stop now!!! We’re just starting to Rock and Roll. (That’s a clue to our May Mystery!) So “Be there or be square”. On May 11, TRQG will host our First Annual Founder’s Day Celebration. Guests of honor will be original Guild members. We will meet in the Family Life Center for a brief business session, show and tell, a Pot Luck luncheon and entertainment. I am truly heartened by your response to support our major event planning efforts. We now have all leadership positions for both Day of Sharing, History Center Exhibit and Quilt Show 2018 filled with a dream team of talent and enthusiasm. We are having a banner year. Our charity donations in the first quarter of 2017 exceeded our entire donation of community quilts for 2016. In addition, there seems to be something for everyone to learn whether with our nationally known speaker in June or our monthly member-lead “Break Out” workshops. What a resounding “Yes” you gave to meet and exceed our Guild’s goals. With your amazing commitment and generosity, we can do anything! Have a Hoppy and Holy Easter and Passover!

MILITARY
QUILTS
For our new members, military quilt
donations go to support the Air Force
Air Evac mission in Germany. The quilts
you donate accompany wounded/injured
military on their flight back to the States.
These quilts need to be approximately
40"x60" without pattern restriction. The
only request is that they do not look too
"fru-fru". The quilts for the Veterans
Home in Kinston can be lap quilt to twin
bed size. Just a reminder that quilts should
have a guild tag affixed to the quilt. Thanks, Bobbie Gould
NURSING HOME QUILTS
Nursing Home Quilts. I received a
total of 16 quilts. Not all have
been signed, but I thank you all
very much. Keep them coming.
Hugs, Jan
Yours truly,
Jan Penner

Business Meeting Etiquette
In the interest of expediting our meetings, keep the flow going, and showing respect to each other, the following will be implemented. Our bylaws state that we conduct meetings following Roberts Rules of order, therefore if you would like to speak to the membership, raise your hand, be recognized, give your name and state your business. In order to try to make the meeting shortened, please try to arrive 30 minutes early (9:30am) to do your sign in, get Block of the month, take care your procedural items before the meeting is called to order at 10:00am. That we can have your full-undivided attention for the meeting, eliminate confusion, and make the meeting shorter. Thank you,
The Guild would like to award two scholarships
each year to the North Carolina Quilt
Symposium.
Symposium is held each year in early June at
various college campuses throughout the state.
Guild members have attended many held at
Peace College in Raleigh, and as far away as
Flat Rock in the western part of the State.
Symposium faculty are drawn from major
quilt teachers from around the world. The
teachers share room and board with the
students in the campus housing. A vendor
mall and quilt show are part of the four day
event. Arrival begins on Thursday afternoon
followed by a ‘meet the teachers’ gathering and
book sale held in the evening. Classes and
workshops begin on Friday and continue thru
Sunday morning, with closing ceremonies at
lunch on Sunday.
Our Scholarships will cover full Symposium
tuition and room and board.
Awarding of the scholarships will be by a

COMMUNITY SERVICES Community Service Quilts Workshop
For our challenge, we had 39 quilters sign up. We received
42 quilts back!!! The winners of the cash
prizes were Ed Dzioba, Gail Schiller and Becky Barnes.
Congratulations to you and thank you to all that
participated. We will not have a Community Services
workshop this month. Instead, there will be a workshop
on Day of Sharing gifts. Our next Community Services
workshop will be on May 25. Ladies:..We are issuing a
challenge for community service quilts. We want you to
pick two fabrics out of the bag (no peeking). Pat and
Alvina will have the bag of fabric at stitch n chat if you
missed the January meeting. We want you to make a
charity quilt of your choosing and the size of your
choosing. This can be for children, nursing home or
stretcher quilts.
Rules: You must use all of the fabric you pick (this can be
on the back as well). You can use any pattern. It must be
quilted with binding finished. You can machine sew the
binding down. Please sign your name when you pick the
material. Then when your quilt is finished and you give it
to Pat Phillips or Alvina Diello, your name will go into a
drawing. After you finish your first quilt, you may pick
another 2 fabrics and when finished, your name will go
into the drawing a second time.
This challenge ends at the April general meeting at which
time we will pick 3 names out of the bag for a prize. You
can only win once. If you make 2 quilts, your name goes in
the bag twice. If you make 3 quilts, your name goes in the
bag 3 times.
If you have any questions, please contact. Contact - Pat

Kitty Pillows Ladies, this has been a bonus month for
kitty pillows. After the meeting I took to
the Sun Journal 13 pillows. Thanks so
much to Pat Boni-1, Alvina Diello-2,
Nancy Hausman-1, Marie Garber-2, and
Phyllis Prideaux-7. Phyllis's pillows were
made from her quilting-practice
sandwiches. A great idea!! A big thanks
to Chantal Heustis who made
and distributed 18 kitty pillows herself to
two shelters. Beverly Nicholson made 4
pillows that she brought with her from
Charlotte. Talk about busy women.
Thanks to all of you!

THREAD ORDER Thread Order Alvina Diello - 638-8961 - will be taking thread orders. See me at stitch n chat.
FALL RETREAT
It is now official, Chris Gillespie is the
Chairman of the show, along with
co-chairs, Linda Bory and Phyllis
Prideaux. We are all very excited
and almost all the Committee
Chairs/Co-Chairs have been
identified. Activities have already
started. It is now about 550 days to
showtime.
Our branded show name, BEE BY THE
RIVER 2018, will continue and we will
have a new show theme of “Seasons
of Quilts”. As usual, quilts of all sizes,
designs and themes are desired in
our main show. There may be some
enhancements in the judging/show
categories but I would expect them
to remain the same. We will be
looking for around 250 quilts to
display, so now is the time to start
planning and making your quilts. I
would also like to suggest that you
get together with your friends and
define your own group small
challenge where you EACH work
together to each create a row by
row, medallion, or some other plan
where you create a quilt which all of
you work on. If you would like, we
can share how this process would
work at a Business Meeting. Just let
me know if this is something you are
interested in.
Our theme , “Seasons of Quilts” , will
be reflected in our Challenge Quilts,
our Show Banners, our Special Exhibit
and in our special raffle – “In the Bag
or on the Table”. For example, the
Show Banners that will hang from the
lights fixture in the entrance hallways
will reflect the Fall Season – fall
colors, leaves, pumpkins, witches,
turkeys, etc.. We will be looking for
members to help make the 22
banners required. Marty Dzioba will
be sharing more information.
Pam Bonina and Chris Babich will be
responsible for the rules for the
Challenge Quilts. These will also be
based on a seasonal theme. The
Challenge will be announced at the
June Business Meeting.
The Special Exhibit will be a chance
to display all the beautiful “Holiday”
or Seasonal quilts we have made
over the years. These can be quilts,
wall hangings, table runners, or
quilted decorations. Lilly Lucier will
be chairing this activity.
Finally, the “In the Bag or on the
Table” will be raffle items reflecting
beautiful bags, table runners,
placemats, etc with a seasonal
theme. Judy Frankel will be chairing
this activity.
So start planning and making your
quilts for our Show.
