AUGUST 2016
THE QUILTERS
QUILL Board Meeting August 4, 2016 Business Meeting August 11, 2016 www.twinriversquiltersguild.com
From the President
It was great to have such a good turnout for our August meeting. We sure had a lot of updates, news and quilt show reminders. WE are a very busy group with lots of fun things happening. It was also a pleasure to welcome 4 new quilters to our guild. We enjoy having new members and new ideas. I know that Chris Babich and her mentoring team will be reaching out to each new member to make sure that you know all the activities that are in process. The best way to meet our members is to attend stitch-n-chat, go to workshops and participate on committees. Everyone who does makes new friends for life and has a great time. Here’s a couple of reminders…
Sue Kleeman will be collecting quilt stuff, yarn and crafting supplies, etc at all Thursday meetings through September and until October 6. She will NOT accept anything after October 6. It takes a lot of work to prepare items for the Twice Around Booth so go to your quilt/craft rooms and find UFO’s or other material you will not be using in the future and bring it to the meeting. IF you have any questions, please just give her a call. Please read Ruth Power’s January 2017 Retreat Update. A team has been working hard to arrive at a new solution for our Retreat’s after the Clam Digger got new owners. I believe we have come up with a workable solution. Ruth has those details that will start with the January Retreat. Rosemary will then follow-up with a late winter retreat at the end of February, following the same process. We are still working on options for the 2017 Fall Retreat.
Within the next week or so, I will be sending out 2016 Fall Retreat Updates to those who have signed up. If you are on the Attendee list and something has come up and you can not attend. Please let me know as soon as possible so I can let those on the waiting list know. Kathy Farrar has been working hard selling raffle tickets for our beautiful 2016 Raffle Quilt. I know she still needs people to help her work at various events in displaying and selling raffle tickets. Please reach out to her and sign-up to help. It is time for the Moorehead Day of Sharing. It is Saturday October 15, starting promptly at 10:00am. I have started the sign-up sheet but more information is coming. It is always a great event and we need to support our sister quilters. Let me know if you want to attend and I will add you to the list. Also Cathy Cox and her team are ready for you to sign-up for the annual Holiday Luncheon at the Flame on December 8 at the Flame in New Bern. The cost of the luncheon is $25, but the guild is subsidizing $5 for members. Please sign-up and the ticket cost will be $18. Please make your checks out to TRQG. It is always great fun. Check out the information in the Newsletter.
It is so enjoyable to work with such a great group of people. I really appreciate your on-going support and ideas. Finally… work on those show quilts and get your registration slips in to Marisue Shannon.. Chris
Reminder - All members must wear their official TRQG nametags to every meeting and activity or pay the
price...$0.50 to the kitty. It is for safety reasons required by the church. The church personnel do not
recognize any other nametags
VP of Programs Attached to the Newsletter is the remaining 2016 event calendar. There will be a Quilt Show Boutique workshop to make flower pincushions. They are SO SO cute. No sewing machine required. It will be August 25th. Sandy Smith and Jeanne Batten will have the supply list in the Newsletter. Chris

2016 NOVEMBER RETREATT
As always, the Fall Retreat is LOTS of fun working with each other. We always have some surprise in store for the group. If you have never attended a retreat with our group, you don’t know what you a missing. Please reserve these dates on your calendar for the Fall Retreat - October 30 –
November 4 at the Clam Digger Hotel. We will be able to have a late afternoon check-in on Sunday, October 30. There will not be a second retreat in November this year. We did not reserve an extra week soon enough and the Clam Digger is all booked until Thanksgiving. The daily room charge is $45 a night. Remember that you need to make your own reservations with the Clam Digger, along with your name on my sign-up list. When you call the Clam Digger, please let them know that you are part of the Twin Rivers Quilt Guild Fall Retreat. The phone number is 252-247-4155. They will review room charges and room cancellation process and potential charges. As usual, you can book a single room or get a roommate. However we must have at least 15 booked rooms to be able to have the retreat. Any questions, contact Chris Gillespie or Dorothy Najarian
2017 WINTER RETREAT January 15 (Sun.) – Jan. 20 (Fri), 2017 If you weren’t at the Aug. 11 Business Meeting, you missed the update on changes at the ClamDigger Inn which will affect our retreats beginning in January 2017. To compress the info, the Inn has been bought, and the new owners are not only updating and fixing up, but raising the prices to match other motels in the area. After investigating several other places, it was decided that the January retreat would still go to the ClamDigger. Changes include: nightly room fee of $69 plus taxes, 20 room requirement for the 5 nights, and $200 for the week for the use of the Bogue Room. Therefore, when we take your name for the retreat (beginning Oct.1), we are requiring
Page 5 of 14
a $10 fee to cover the cost of the Bogue Room. This is non-refundable and non-transferable. We must have your signup and $10 by Dec. 8. Important: Email to Sue Kleeman ([email protected]) and send a check in the mail, or see her in person. No phone calls! Then, you must call your reservation in to the ClamDigger with your credit card number by Dec. 25. (1-800-338-1533 or 252-247-4155 ext. 0) Tell them you are with TRQG and the dates of the retreat. These dates are important! We are now required to sign contracts, and if we don’t get the required number of reservations, we must cancel the retreat. This is new to us, too, so please bear with us. Ruth Powers
2016 RAFFLE QUILT
I am so sorry to have missed you all at the business meeting Thursday. Sometimes life throws you a curve ball and you just have to catch it! Raffle sales continue to be extremely successful. Thank you so much to the brave volunteers that have endured the heat of the Farmer's Market this summer. It is hard to believe we are coming down to the home stretch and our lovely quilt will soon find a forever home. We shall miss it so! A few slots are still available for September and October. Please e-mail if haven't signed up yet and a would like to volunteer. Kathy
DONATIONS Bring your hotel/motel soaps, shampoos and lotions to the guild to be given to Religious Community Services (RCS) by Alvina Diello. Or if you choose, you can take your donations directly to RCS.
They are located at 919 George Street, New Bern and also are in charge of the homeless shelter and soup kitchen.
RCS does not sell anything that is donated to them - they give it to the needy or use it in the soup kitchen. They also take household items as well as furniture. They have a van and will come and pick up large items. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and caring for those less fortunate. Alvina Diello
2015-2016 Challenge Quilt I’m hearing very nice comments concerning this category for our show. Sounds like lots of excitement and creative ideas are going into these quilts. If you haven’t finished yours yet you have time to complete it. Time is fast approaching for our in October. It will be fun looking at all the ideas and fabrics bring them to life. Don’t delay if possible jump right on it and let’s all look forward to putting out our best ideas to share and enjoy. Challenge Quilt committee-Pat Mayo, Kay Amend and Linda Tobacco

Our bylaws state that we conduct meetings following Roberts Rules of order, therefore if you would like to speak to the membership, raise your hand, be recognized, give your name and state your business. In order to try to make the meeting shortened, please try to arrive 30 minutes early (9:30am) to do your sign in, get Block of the month, take care your procedural items before the meeting is called to order at 10:00am. That we can have your full-undivided attention for the meeting, eliminate confusion, and make the meeting shorter. Thank you,
MENTORING COMMITTEE A new year and more new members! Our Mentoring Committee's purpose is to act as a source of information for any questions new members may have and to create a positive way for new members to easily understand the fun and the many opportunities of being an active TRQG member can be. Those new members who have just joined will get a call from someone on the committee to see how they might help them learn about what we do and what we are involved in as a quilt guild. If there are quilt guild members out there that would like to join the Mentoring Committee and occasionally call on someone new, just please let me know and we will add you to the list. Chris Babich at: [email protected]
COMMUNITY SERVICES Ladies, thank you for the kitty pillows turned in. There was 1 on the table and 1 in the cabinet with no names, and Jeanne Batten turned in 2 and Linda Re had 2 almost ready. I called the Sun Journal and they are accepting our pillow donations. Please take them there yourselves, but be sure to let me know how many you took. Just drop me an email with the number so I can credit you in our newsletter. Thank you. Oh, for new members, use your scraps of fabrics, batting, edges, selvages, and stuff them into an old pillowcase or make a “bag” about 20” x 20”. Stuff, sew end closed, and it’s finished! These are distributed to several shelters in the area. Ruth Powers

QUILT SHOW ALERT
Your quilt show committee is hard at work with plans to make the 2016 show one of the best ever. Here’s your chance to help us with an exhibit to enhance our RED AND WHITE theme. We want to have a special red and white quilt exhibit;, any age, any size quilt, as long as it is red and white. This will not be a judged category, but there will be entry blanks especially for these red and white quilts, so we can share some information about each quilt – age, provenance, etc. So dig into your closets for red and white quilts, and drop an email to Lilly Lucier her email is
[email protected] to let her know your quilt(s) is(are) available. Lilly will keep track of the number of quilts we can expect, so we know how large an exhibit we can plan. Let us hear from you! Just A Reminder: We are requesting a photo be taken when delivering a donation to a charitable organization. We will be adding these pictures to our display at the COMMUNITY BOOTH. Need to receive pictures by the August 9th meeting. Thanks
