College is a time of change, with a sense
of growth and the burden of stress felt by all
in attendance. Everyone deals with stressors
involved with college differently, and having
multiple options to choose from is paramount
to a healthy and successful academic career.
Fortunately, as students of SUNY Potsdam,
we have an abundance of opportunities for a
stress breaker.
Potsdam is poised on the northern end of
the Adirondack Mountains. Within minutes

PACES Dining Services has received the number one ranking in the Student Opinion Survey (SOS) Project. The SOS project collects information and opinions every three years and uses it to assess and study quality of life issues on SUNY campuses.
The SUNY System Administration Office of Institutional Research and Analysis provided PACES Dining Services with the results. The survey, completed in the Spring of 2012 compares SUNY Potsdam to 26 other state operated educational institutions. The SOS survey findings are important because, unlike other studies, it ranks customer satisfaction against the other twentysix institutions.
George Arnold, Director of Dining Service, credits assessment as the critical
tool that led to improve operational effectiveness and customer satisfaction. PACES Dining Service participates in national benchmarking and longitudinal studies as well as the SOS Survey Project. For example, the National Association of College and University Food Service Benchmarking survey, PACES Dining Services has scored traditionally higher than the national average in every single category.
PACES is a not for profit cooperation, overseen by a Board of Directors that is made up of students, faculty, staff and administrators. PACES mission is to provide quality services to the campus community while generating revenue to return to SUNY Potsdam. Arnold became Director of Dining Services in 2001. In 2003 Dining Services rose to the rank of third, and by 2006 and 2009 it was ranked in second place just behind SUNY Brockport in the SOS survey. Arnold was “thrilled” with the announcement and attributes the change in ranking to the PACES Board
of Directors, who “led with vision” and his dedicated staff, chefs and employees.
PACES Dining Services offers more on campus dining options than any other school in the SUNY system of its size: it allows students to eat anywhere on campus on their meal plan, through a guaranteed meal, exchange or flex credit program; it buys as much local and regional products as possible; it works with local farmers to recycle vegetable scraps into animal feed; it provides used frying oils for bio diesel fuel. PACES Dining Services is a chef driven department, which ensures that the three pillars of PACES Dining Services’ mission (quality, choice and value) are met and expressed in creative and original ways.
The first of a series of #1 celebration days has been planned on campus for October 4th. Contact Abby Lee, PACES Marketing Director, [email protected] : (315) 2673097 for more information.

Mark Zuckerberg may be a billionaire, but is he actually a genius? National corporations such as Ford and Sony advertise their products on Facebook, but do the ads actually produce results? Social media websites seem to be an ingenious way to connect us all, but are they actually bullshit? SUNY Potsdam grad student B.J. Mendelson explores the facade of online success in his book “Social Media is Bullshit”, published by St. Martin’s Press on September 4, 2012.“Yes, I use [social media], but
more for dick and fart jokes because that’s fun.” said Mendelson on what has become a defining feature of the current decade: social media websites and their ability to link people around the

tral Milk Hotel’s “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” when it’s such a hard album to fully swallow. Besides a fair amount of heavy subject matter, such as the Holocaust and several references to Ann Frank, it overall is a mellow rock opera that you can’t help but tap your foot to. In fact, the only word that can be used to describe it is “perfection”, but as far as giving an overall meaning goes; well, that’s a personal journey that only the listener and band can embark on.Unlike most albums that
we’ve never heard of, this record was given five out of five stars in over six different reviews with even notoriously harsh critic. Rolling Stone magazine giving it a four point five out of five. Even though the style is an acquired taste to the mainstream crowd, they will find the tracks take at
least two complete playthroughs to really form a palate. It may seem hardly worth the effort to the average “radiohead hipster” and that could be a true statement to some considering you can’t namedrop Neutral Milk Hotel to your friends. As for most music though, once you become familiar with the band’s unique style, their work can more effectively absorb into your brain.“In the Aeroplane Over the
Sea” is constructed in a way that creates a complex narrative where each track is a chapter in some sort of long lost diary entry that was written 60 years ago and just recently found. Its plot revolves around the Holocaust from the surface but when the listener digs deeper it transforms from a history lesson into a personal statement that hits any pair of ears close to home. They do an amazing job addressing this tragic time with the upmost amount of respect and do it in such a way that does not dilute the content.
It’s far from a typical album with combinations of vocals and instrumentals that may seem odd by themselves, but together they form a truly intricate musical experience that would be impossible to emulate. One could analyze this album in so many different ways and each would receive a perfect result. Its meaning is just so deep that somebody such as myself has heard it nearly 25 times and still am unable to present a clear and precise concept that the creators intended to convey... hell, maybe it has no singular meaning. Take a break from reading now and check this mastery out on Youtube or Facebook; you won’t be sorry.
Do you have better music tastes than me? Well then prove it! Send an email to ruba[email protected] with your perfect album and I’ll check it out and see if it is worthy of being featured in future bucket list articles!

globe based on their interests and cultural proclivities. For a man with close to 800,000 followers on Twitter, it may seem hypocritical for him to denounce social media so vehemently with his publication. Isn’t even just asking his followers to check the book out a direct contradiction to the thesis of his research? While it may seem so, Mendelson argues there’s a stark difference between someone with a message such as himself, and cyberhipsters and marketing representatives who contribute to an omnipotent and misleading force he lovingly describes as “The AssholeBased Economy.” He spells out the difference very clearly in a post on his website.“There is nothing wrong with
packaging and selling information. There is something wrong with packaging and selling harmful information at the expense of someone else. That’s what it means to participate in ‘The AssholeBased Economy’.” He explains it further by describing characters who use what he calls “The Nickelback Effect” to take an idea that’s useless and boring to the general public and present it well enough and at enough times of the day to get it in the public consciousness. In the terms of social media,
Mendelson argues it’s “Cyber Hipsters” who are using the popularity of the internet to get paid large sums of money to hold presentations about the marketing efficiency of social networking. He sums it up in the book by writing, “We live in a world where it’s far easier to make money telling people how to use the internet than it is to actually get rich using it.”So it seems Mendelson cer
tainly has a certain flair for breaking ideas down into crudely comical terms, and has contributed to enough national publications to be considered a notable writer (The Huffington Post, Forbes, and CNN to name a few), but what would cause an amateur comedian/freelance writer to commit to writing an exposé of what is largely a free service for the vast majority of its users? While Mendelson explained to me he still believes the sites are used beneficially on a regular basis, it’s certain experiences he’s endured that shook his faith.Though he was able to build
considerable internet credit through independentlyrun projects such as Earth’s Temporary Solution and AMillionHighFives, Mendelson’s more discouraging experience with social media came with his experience volunteering for the Wounded Warrior Family Support Foundation. He described to me how the program was formed to provide families with members returning home from war a twoweek trip to Disney World so the children and spouse could have time to acclimate to the “new family reality” in a happy environment. The organization promptly spent threethousand dollars advertising on Facebook, of which they gained twelvethousand fans, and twelvethousand possible donors. Despite the numbers, the organization had none of those fans donate money to the cause.Mendelson described this
phenomenon to me as “The One Percent Rule,” coined by the AT&T Labs back in 1997. He explained the rule means of all the advertisements, independent
causes, and anything else anyone can interact with on the internet, only one percent of users ever will. “Sure, one percent of users could mean some sort of interaction with a business,” he elaborated, “but you have to ask yourself is all the planning, money, and time spent developing a resource worth one percent?” In the case of the Wounded Warriors cause, they weren’t even lucky enough to get one percent. So instead of pushing
“groundbreaking” social media sites the organization went oldfashioned: they got a fancy looking car, traveled the US, highfived passerbys and asked them to sign the car as well as donate to the cause. With some local news coverage in each city, the event became a “feelgood” story that generally attracted the attention of the public at large. Two years later, the organization is still going strong and raised one million dollars in this last year alone. “Things don’t change, really.”
said Mendelson on the success. “What worked in 1927 will work in 2027,” and then he cited Edward Bernays and his 1923 book “Crystallizing Public Opinion” as it was critically lauded for simply changing the name of “propaganda” to “public relations”, one of the most brilliant PR moves in history. “Things don’t change because people don’t change, pick up any selfhelp book from over the years and you’ll realize people behave and can fall victim to a lot of the same things.”While he may seem like a pes
simistic sort of digital prophet, Mendelson is able to find hope in seeing through the “bullshit”. A selfprofessed fan of politi
cally charged comedians such as Bill Hicks and George Carlin , Mendelson views his enlightenment as a chance to slowly chip away at The AssholeBased Economy. Even Potsdam’s very own Richard DelGiudice had an influence on Mendelson’s writing style and brand of humor. While Mendelson would take to heart the innocent knocks DelGiudice made about the school, it was the professor’s scrutiny of his papers that really left an impression. Those case briefs would always be met with this look that said, “This is shit. You can do better.” And no matter how good they got over the semester, I would still get that look. And that really pushed me in terms of doing the research for ‘Social Media Is Bullshit.’ I wanted to do the best I could because in my head I had that look on his face playing whenever I thought I was done.”After a seminar once Men
delson asked Princeton philosopher Harry Frankfurt, author of an influential book entitled “On Bullshit” which landed him on The Daily Show, if the assholes could ever be beaten. Frankfurt replied with a prompt “no,” but explained we can humiliate them, poke fun at their illogic, and eventually expose the truth about what is actually happening in our economy. The fact of the matter is, ev
ery time Mendelson presses a social media marketer for proof of how much money they make online, he is often met with seedy responses and sometimes rude gestures. While they may not be the root of all evil, his antics would indicate that social media websites certainly have something to hide.

September is here, and it seems it just wouldn’t be fall anymore without an Apple Keynote. Well for all you junkies out there craving the latest Apple’s got to offer, they did not disappointThe biggest announcement was
the new iPhone. iPhone 5 (despite being the 6th model) is claimed to be “The biggest thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone.” If meant literally, they made their point. It now has a .5 inch taller screen, giving it a 16:9 aspect ratio, as well as a 5th row of apps available on a retina display, very much like the ones on the New iPad and Retina Macbook Pro. It features a new plug, called Lightning, which is an all digital 8 pin connector. The camera, while still only at an 8 megapixel mark, has been updated and is being called
the “iSight Camera.” Included with the software is the ability to take high quality panorama photos, and full 1080p HD video. The front facing camera clocks in at 1.2 megapixels, and has 720p recording capabilities. The best received feature to be included has to be it’s 4G LTE capabilities. Now iPhone users can take advantage of blazingly fast internet. As for the internals, iPhone 5
now sports Apple’s latest A6 possessor, as well as 1 Gigabyte of RAM. It will also ship with IOS 6 preloaded out of the box, which includes an updated version of Siri. Despite the faster processor and extra RAM, battery life has not changed since the 4s. It will come available in black or white, with storage increments of 16, 32, or 64 Gigabytes internally. The iPod line also received a
makeover. iPod Touch, aside from coming in many new colors, also
features the new iSight Camera, Lightning connector, and 4inch Retina Display. While it will also be running IOS 6, it only has the A5 processor inside it. It comes in 32 and 64 gigabyte models.iPod Nano now looks like
a smaller version of the iPod Touch. Fancy new colors, Lightning connector, video playback, the works. It does not feature a camera though, and is only available in a 16 gigabyte modelApple also announced an up
date to their headphones. Now called “Earpods” they are claimed to bring clearer sound while still being comfortable and snug. They are included with all newly announced products.iPhone 5 preorders started Sep
tember 14, and have already started breaking records. New products start shipping September 21.
