The Raglan Sports Netball Club is up and running thanks to some generous sponsors including Supervalue, The Harbour View Hotel and the Marlin Bar and Grill.

The Club was established in 2012 and began with 2 teams. This year the

club has grown to include 4 teams made up of girls from Raglan, Te Uku, Waitetuna, Waingaro, and Te Akau.

With ongoing costs the club is still actively seeking sponsorship and support so please contact Jo at Waitetuna School 8255827 if your business or organisation can help out in any way.

Dear Raglan I want to

give a massive thank you for all your incredible support and encouragement. Living here surrounded by alive, soulful and caring people helped me find the motivation to follow my dreams and enter Masterchef in the first place. I’m so glad I got off the couch and

jumped into the adventure boots and all! While I was away it was great to know that Ani and Ariana had great people around them, and when I first got home I saw the beauty and depth of where we live with fresh eyes. Living in a mansion was fun but it just reinforced to me that it’s the people we love and who love us that matter more than anything else. I have been totally blown away and humbled by

the flood of support from everyone in Raglan and it has made the whole experience all the more special. What we all have here is what many people are looking for in their lives!

Best regards,Aaron BrunetP.S. The thing about moving

to Melbourne was a lighthearted comment on the show, not a travel plan!

sponsors – The Marlin Bar/Cafe, Harbourview Hotel, Tonic, Frocking Gorgeous, Glamour, Jet Art, Happy Feet, Julia, Lotte, Val and our vibrant auctioneer, Julie Hanna. And of course the workers and supporters without whom this would not have happened.

Over $700 has been raised for Breast Cancer Research. Well Done Raglan.

Raglan lad shows older rivals way in Huntly half marathonRaglan lad Lenny Reynolds was anxious when it came to running the Huntly half marathon recently – and understandably so. Competing in the under-20s, the 11-year-old feared he was going to do badly and get left behind.

He needn’t have worried. “Once I got going the atmosphere took me away,” he says.

And it wasn’t long before Lenny was overtaking some of his much older competitors, going on to finish the 21.1-kilometre race in just 1hr 44mins 35secs – a respectable time for an adult let alone a lad not yet in his teens. The performance put Lenny 7th in an under-20s field of 14, and about 200th overall in the 900-strong field.

“I think I was the youngest person there (competing),” he proudly told the Chronicle last week, explaining how his performance really built up his self-esteem.

Lenny’s great showing in the Huntly half marathon wasn’t achieved without some hard work, though. The Raglan Area School pupil’s been doing lots of training around town and beyond: one circuit takes him from his home on Cliff Street to Upper Wainui Road and back – a total of 16 kilometres.

Then there’s his hill circuits. He might start with a run around the three bridges then tackle Stewart, Long and Bow Streets – running up and down each of them10 times over!

Why? Because hills are really good for fitness, of course.

Lenny started running about a year ago because his family was doing “lots of fitness stuff”, he explains. Dad, Mark, does heaps of biking apparently while Mum, Tish, multitasks – she walks, bikes and does both yoga and waka ama.

But his 14-year-old sister Frankie’s not into fitness at all, says Lenny, who admits good-naturedly he’d hoped – but failed – to shame her into doing something about it.

Lenny’s runs have become longer and longer and now take an hour or two most days after school. “I was feeling like I could extend myself so did further distances and then decided why not enter a competition.”

That’s when he hit upon Huntly’s annual half marathon. “I guess I just felt I could achieve it and it’d be cool … I was kind of building up to it.”

Tish is amazed at her son’s willpower and determination, and impressed by his effort in the half marathon.

Lenny confesses to having a

“weird diet” too which is all part of the health kick, with no refined sugars and nothing processed or fatty like chips or lollies.

Frankie loves Lenny’s diet, adds Tish, “because she’s totally opposite”, and scores all her brother’s Easter eggs into the bargain.

started Book now!

This is not about food – but hopefully it’s a recipe for success!

A wide and vibrant ‘green scene’(with a small g) is how one might describe the political landscape of Whaingaroa. There is a small committed group of Green (big G this time) members, but alongside the Party list is a very long list of people who have expressed interest in various initiatives undertaken by the Greens.

There are also dozens - probably hundreds – of people in and around Raglan who are doing green things with energy and passion, deeply concerned about the effects of both on and offshore mining, land use, pollution of coasts and waterways, the safety of food and medicines - the list goes on.

The Green Party recognises that, while a lot of people prefer not to connect with a political party or even the political process, come the General Elections next year, they may be looking for a voice that can articulate their concerns at national level.

So a small group of people, both Green and green, at the heart of the Raglan green scene are looking at some innovative ways of networking all the various green interests, both to increase their own understanding of key issues for Whaingaroa, and to let people know what Green Party thinking is.

Are we talking about lots of boring meetings? No way! We’re talking about a series of delicious round-the-table potluck dinners where the conversation is relaxed and information is shared informally.

Plans at present are to hold the dinners every two months, with skyped or live conversations with Green members of parliament on the alternate months. The latter sessions, while not round the dinner table, will still include shared food and social time.

At our second green scene dinner, we all shared briefly why we are green – or Green – and the reasons were as varied as the number of people. Some are refugees from other parties, some come from a family tradition of radical politics, others are driven by concerns for the future of our children and grandchildren.

If you would like to be part of the green scene, or just come along to a green gathering, join the contact list or look out for invitations in the Chronicle.

Coming up on Monday June24th: Meet Gareth Hughes , the Green party spokesperson on seabed mining – a topic that will be concerning a lot of people in this part of the world. Venue: the Bowling Club, 7.15pm.

Inside LEFT once it opens officially opens this week

Raglan Community House will be running the ‘Snow On The Beach’ festival once again this year following on from the success of our festival last year.

This year should be bigger and better with 10 tons of snow, bouncy castle, Music from RagFM, food and lots more. The event, which coincides with the annual Mid Winter Swim sponsored by Ray White will take place on Saturday 15th June at the Raglan Kopua Domain, just by the boat ramp and is a FREE event for all the family.

Last year’s Snow on the Beach attracted a huge crowd and received very positive feedback. With an extra 3 tons of snow this year the event will hopefully attract more people and we hope it will become an annual event in Raglan.

Raglan Community House has worked closely with Ray White Raglan Real Estate who will also be hosting the annual Mid Winter Swim. The swim will take place at 1pm with judging for best fancy dress etc taking place at 12.30pm. Entry in the swim is free and open to anyone brave enough to take the plunge into the cold waters of Raglan Harbour. For more information on the Snow on the Beach Festival or the Mid Winter Swim contact Tony at the Raglan Community House on 07 825 8142. You can see more information on the Raglan Community House Facebook page.

Raglan Community House are also looking for volunteers to help us “spread the snow” on Saturday Morning. If you would like to help just turn up with your shovel at 10am at the boat ramp on the Kopua Domain. Dress Warm! For more information contact Tony on 07 825 8142

In the event of heavy rain the ‘Snow on the Beach’ Festival will be postponed until Saturday 29th June 2013

Jet spreads wings through new outlet in CambridgeJet – the artists collective which runs its own very successful shop in downtown Raglan – is taking off.

Raglan ceramics artist Hayley Hamilton says she and three other local artists from Jet Collective are so convinced “shared creativity” works they’ve joined forces with three Cambridge artists to open another shop in the South Waikato town.

Called LEFT because “everything we’ve used (to outfit the premises) had been left behind”, the shop’s a collaboration by a group of creatives who believe there’s a place for their hand-crafted products in today’s consumer-driven, technology-saturated culture.

Like Jet which has traded in the main street of Raglan for 11 years now, the LEFT Makers Collective – as they’re called – not only own and operate the Cambridge gallery themselves but make every single piece of work within it.

Also like Jet, each member of the collective works in the shop one day of the week where responsibility is shared, overheads are low and freight costs non-existent, says Hayley.

“Shared creativity can succeed,” she insists, pointing to Jet’s longevity.

Fellow Raglan artists Karla Stevenson – who, like Hayley, turns her hand to painting and ceramics – Sarah Stead who makes jewellery and

fabric designer Rebecca Dowling of Scintilla fame agree. “LEFT is a space that merges our creative worlds,” they say.

They’d toyed with the idea of having a second outlet somewhere else for a few years now. After taking over an old Empire Street nightclub, the seven artists spent a month turning it into what Hayley describes as a “beautiful, romantic space”.

Hayley’s hubby Craig built some walls and generally did the hard labour. “He didn’t know what he was getting himself into,” Hayley confessed to the Chronicle.

In true Raglan style, just about everything used in the fit-out has been recycled. Even the shop sign outside was made from tin cans, old milk bottles and pellets, and it “looks beautiful” says Hayley.

Retro amber lights from dumps and charity shops are also used along

with an old ladder, drums from a Salvation Army shop and a wooden counter from haberdashery days to show off displays inside.

An old desk with a glass top contains jewellery, and shelving is made from old piano parts.

The result is LEFT – a retail shop, a gallery, a creative space, a concept. “It is a way for us to open doors to our studios and workshops,” say the artists, “to let you peek inside and hang out for a while.”

And not only is everything about the shop and its fittings “left behind”, adds Hayley, but the shop’s on the left of a one-way street in Cambridge – and, hey, Raglan’s on the left-hand side of New Zealand, she quips.

LEFT opens officially with wine and nibbles tomorrow, Friday June 14 at 7pm, if Raglanites care to venture to Cambridge.

Early bird discount for dog ownersFor the second year in a row, Waikato district dog owners can save around $20 if they register their dog before the end of July.

By now dog owners should have received their renewal notices reminding them that registration for the year to 30 June 2014 is due by 1 August.

“The best thing to do is get in early, get the discount and keep your dog legal,” Waikato District Council General Manager Customer Support

Sue Duignan said.“By registering dogs, the council

can ensure residents enjoy the benefits of dog ownership while minimising the risk of danger, distress and nuisance to the general public,” Ms Duignan said.

If you are a new dog owner or already have approved status the dog registration fee is $88 (or $67 if you pay before 1 August). If you have general owner status the fee is $113 (or $93 with the discount). Selected or farm dog fees are $60 (or $39 with the discount).

Lane selection Most roundabouts that have more than one lane in each direction are marked with lanes and arrows. The markings will tell you which lane to use. Not all roundabouts are marked in the same way so take extra care.

Signal use Always indicate left before exiting.

Before entering a roundabout you must indicate if you’re going left or right (if you’re going straight ahead, don’t indicate).

You must give way to all trac that will cross your path from your right as you enter the roundabout.

You then have to signal left as you pass the exit immediately before the one you intend taking.

At multi-lane roundabouts, you have to approach and enter the roundabout in the correct lane according to your intended exit.

Pies a hit but shop closure real blow Just about everyone other than the odd onion-hater seemingly loved Dave and Gail Brown’s generous pies, but now the duo face starting over afresh.

After barely 15 months running the Raglan West store and its associated motels, the couple whose pies and pasties were dubbed by regulars as “world famous in Raglan” packed up and moved to a new home outside of town last Friday with “basically nothing” other than their possessions.

The closure of their business on the Sunday of Queen’s Birthday Weekend – followed by a mid-week garage sale of shop, kitchen and accommodation contents – came after they had their lease terminated by landlord Tony Bruce in what he described as “a simple commercial matter”.

The Browns, who moved up from Taranaki after Gail was made redundant from her officer manager job there, said they poured $132,000 into the business all up. But while with no lease to on-sell they’d now lost all their money, the couple were still hinting as locals helped them shift out on Friday that Raglan “may not have seen the last” of their good old-fashioned home cooking.

Meanwhile the locked and rather forlorn-looking shop may soon be open again. Tony Bruce told the Chronicle early this week he was closing off a deal after having had “several parties ready and willing to take it on”.

He played down the store closure, emphasising it was a simple commercial matter in which “nothing changes, only the operator and how it is operated”.

Tony said the Browns did not renew the lease for a further term, and were advised through his solicitor of “the options available to them as tenants” before being shut down.

The couple admitted to the Chronicle they’d overlooked a clause of the agreement which required a review in January of the conditions of their lease. Because of that, they said, they were put first on a month-to-month contract and then in May informed their lease would be terminated within the month.

While Gail emphasised last Friday that “we didn’t want to go … it’s very sad”, the couple also conceded that in hindsight it was a mistake going into business in March last year with a slow winter just around the corner.

Tony Bruce said he had reports there was “virtually no stock” in the store late last year. He said he could not reveal the nature of the new business – and whether Raglan West still had a local dairy – until later this week. Edith Symes

GRADE RESULT PLAYERS OF THE DAY

This week the Chronicle talks to talented jewellery designer and artist Sarah Steed. Image: Tracie Heasman.

Brief description of your practice?

Beautiful jewels with a natural feel and from time to time I throw my hands into clay.

What are you working on at the moment?

A collection of jewels for a brand spanking new collective opening in Cambridge - LEFT, 29 Empire Street. I’m stoked to be a part of LEFT and loving creating with dreamy moss aquamarine, tourmaline and herkimer diamonds.

Who are you influenced by?

Rothko, Andy Goldsworthy, Gabriele Koch, Richard Long, Wabi Sabi, Magdalene Odundo, Brancusi.

The best piece of advice you ever got?

Live simply and do something you love.

Best and worst thing about being an artist?

Best thing is having creative hands and thoughts and the worst thing is not being able to switch it off and being wide awake at 3am, oh and having an untidy house!

In another life I would be?

A heart stone.

What possession would you like to save in a fire?

The Beaudry boys followed by my lovely little house, I’d so wanna save the arch window.

If money were no object what frivilous non essential would you buy for yourself?

A strawbale art studio and a skate bowl for my biggest boy.

What four people dead or alive would you have to a dinner party?

My brothers so we could all meet each others children at long last.

Your ideal era?

60’s.

Your best traveling experience?

Pink flamingos in a blue sky in Morocco.

Are you a dog or a cat person?

Love both.

Do you have recurring dreams? What about?

I used to have a recurring dream about flying. I’d have to run really fast and then dive into the air. I fly with my arms out to the sides but no flapping, like wings just gliding through the air - like you are free falling. I have to focus my mind on flying or else I start drifting back down to land. Apparently we all fly differently.

Where can we see your designs?

Ask the Artist:

A series of Q & A’s with our local artists

It’s all cisterns go for the controversial Whaanga Coast wastewater scheme – but not before there was opposition from an unexpected quarter to the increasingly costly planned link-up with Raglan town’s sewerage system.

While once Waikato District Council senior managers were trying desperately to get sufficient Whale Bay, Manu Bay and Upper Wainui Road property owners signed up to make the scheme a goer, in the latest chapter of the saga council staff were instead recommending the rejection of tenders for the work on financial grounds.

And - in a remarkable u-turn - there was even concern from officialdom that the ambitious project might not stop sewage contaminating Whale Bay after all.

But at a public-excluded full council meeting late last month, councillors over-rode the staff recommendation and voted 10-3 for a resolution that gives the multimillion-dollar project the nod.

The resolution – put by Raglan ward councillor Clint Baddeley, who it is understood was instrumental in pushing things through in the face of mostly staff opposition – requires

some reading between the lines as it was released into open meeting without the relevant report which remains confidential.

However it is obvious from the resolution’s wording that the cost of the scheme has ramped up from an early 2011 estimated cost of $2.1 million to now sit somewhere between $3.26 and $3.5 million.

It’s also clear from the released wording that the connection charges for Whaanga Coast residents will be held as is despite the cost blowout, a point Councillor Baddeley saw as critical when he spoke to the Chronicle before a Raglan Community Board meeting on Tuesday of this week.

Sixty-five out of a possible 110 Whaanga Coast properties have signed up so far, at a cost of almost $11,000 apiece, and Clint said the key now was getting the other 45 to also join up and so reduce the cost of the scheme to ratepayers across the Waikato district.

The resolution specifies those 45 property owners can connect during the construction phase on the same terms as the 65 who’ve already signed up, but that whatever funding deficit remains will have to be absorbed Waikato-wide through the general rate.

And that may not be small

Artist wins national small sculpture prize R a g l a n artist Stuart Bridson is this year’s r e c i p i e n t of the 2013 S m a l l S c u l p t u r e Prize. His work ‘Small Kitset No 1’ took out the $3,000 award announced recently at the Waiheke Community Art Gallery.

The award for an original free-standing or wall sculpture up to 450mm in any dimension is the only national award exhibition for small sculpture held in New Zealand.

In his address leading to the announcement of the award winner, selector Matt Ellwood, Senior Lecturer at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design said, “The potentiality of this piece is wonderful, a sculpture of a sculpture, or not a sculpture in itself, but a provocation to the viewer to engage with the elements and instructions within the box to construct the sculpture. The crate itself is exactly the maximum dimensions allowed and references portability and

security, the transaction of art as a commodity. It has art historical lineage with artists like Duchamp, and perhaps most importantly, reconfigures discarded elements, giving them new value and in a modest way comments on the environmental impact we humans make on the earth.”

The exhibition, which is sponsored by Davis Funerals, in conjunction with Obsidian Vineyard, was first initiated to in 2009 to complement Waiheke Island’s ‘headland sculpture on the gulf’ exhibition and proved so popular it’s now held annually.

The $3000 Award this year attracted over 100 entries and the 35 works by 31 artists were selected for the finalists’ exhibition.

Entries came from throughout New Zealand and included four by Waiheke artists.

change, with the Waikato Times reporting a council source as saying ratepayers may have to stump up with $450,000-500,000 if some properties still did not join the scheme. It was pointed out at Tuesday’s community board meeting that rather than Whaanga Coast residents meeting 60 percent of the cost, as originally proposed, they could now end up footing only 49 per cent of it.

The source quoted in the Times was also reported as saying proper investigations should have been carried out to confirm wastewater contamination detected in the Whaanga Coast area was caused by failing septic tanks.

The Times cited a staff report – presumably the report which remains officially off-limits – as saying there was a “theoretical high level of public and environmental risk” from the Whaanga Coast having septic tanks as the primary method to treat wastewater.

But the report warned that “what cannot be quantified is the level [by] which this risk will reduce, and the residual risk remaining with only a portion of the community in the area connecting to the system”.

New Road NamesNotice is hereby given that the Waikato District Council, for the purpose of giving developers a selection of road names for any future development, asks that the Raglan community put forward new road names to the Raglan Community Board for consideration.

In line with Council policy the following guidelines should be considered when choosing road names:

(a) Names must not be a duplicate of any existing district roads and preferably not duplicate any name occurring within surrounding districts.

(b) Names should be brief (restricted to one word only) and be easily and readily pronounced. Identical sounding names with different spelling are to be avoided.

(c) The length of the name should be desirably not exceed 12-15 characters. The use of hyphens to connect parts of names should be avoided and the name written as one word or as separate words where established by usage.

(d) Historical factors should be considered (with reference to the area or people involved – including Maori, early settlers, political, social or economic), as should natural features, outstanding events or persons.

The proposed road names can be dropped off at the Raglan Office or in writing to the Raglan Community Board by the 31 July 2013

This notice is given pursuant to the Tenth Schedule of the Local Government Act 1974
