MODTRAIN: Innovative Modular Vehicle Concepts for an I ntegrated European Railway System

• MODTRAIN background: New trains risk independent interpretations of requirements and being built from unproven prototyp e components.

• MODTRAIN objective: Definition and proof of the necessary functional, electrical and mechanical interfaces and validation procedures as reference to deliver the range of interchangeable modules that will make the next generation of intercity trains and universal locomotives possible.

• MODTRAIN framework: Fixed formation passenger trains and universal locomotives capable of 200 km/h and more.

MODTRAIN Definition

MODTRAIN intermediate achievements

• The common Functional Breakdown Structure (FBS) and Product Breakdown Structure (PBS)

• The set of common Functional Requirements Specifications (FRS), which have been completed in their first official draft in February 2005, and are now in the review process performed by the Operator Group, UIC and the MODUSER partners

• The draft set of common Operational Requirements Specifications (ORS) of the Operator Group, which provide the operational requirements, specifically for High Speed Trains (HST) and for Locomotives, with the aim to maximise the degree of standardisation without loosing operational performance

• The list of components to be standardised, first draft (format prEN) partly available to internal review

• The work on Functional Interface Specifications (FIS) is well on progress, with final draft available

• The adoption of the professional requirements management tool (RequisitePro) where all the functional requirements and interface specifications are pulled together. The same tool is being used by other EU funded projects (INTEGRAIL, Modbrake).

Planned activities until the end of the project

• Complete the Functional Interface Specifications (FIS) by performing workshop reviews with external suppliers (see next slide)

• Propose draft specifications for EN standards, CWA based on MODTRAIN components standardisation

• Perform EUCAB testing (functional mock-up) in SIMUFER (Lille) in June & November 2007. The results will be further integrated in the next revision of the ORS and in the demonstration to be performed by another EU funded project, EUDD+

• Demonstrate the energy efficiency of the centralised variable frequency option proposed by Modpower (to be tested by Alstom/SNCF on a ZTER EMU)

• Ensure a close collaboration with MODBRAKE (started on 1st of June 2006)
