Have you ever visited Disney World or Disneyland? Ever wondered what goes on that we don’t see to make sure all the “Disney magic” happens? Have you ever thought about the leadership that Walt Disney provided to build what we know today? I have never been to Disney World to experience the parks from a tourist point of view yet, but I have been on a Back Stage tour at Disney World. The tour revealed details of what you see as you walk in and start down Main Street of the Magic Kingdom. What you don’t realize is the purpose for everything you see such as the size of the buildings, the names printed on the windows and doors or whether a service is on the right or the left side of the street. Everything you see has a purpose. That purpose is to give you an unforgettable experience, provide for all your needs and efficiently move a lot of people without them even knowing it. It also revealed the organization, the planning, the amount of people, and the training they receive to make the “Disney Magic” happen for those of us who visit. A Disney cast member, even if they are only selling popcorn or balloons, is not put out on the street without being equipped to display the Disney image.
Does all this structure sound familiar? WTE has a purpose, organization, and training to
provide a weekend experience with God for others while taking care of all their needs and efficiently moving them around without them being distracted by what is going on behind the scenes. All leaders and team members are given a time of training. All of which allows each one of us to be the instrument God uses to make things happen, display His image through our actions and words and give Him glory. God equips us to display His image through the structure we follow on a WTE weekend not only to provide for the pilgrims, but also for every team member to experience God in a special way as they serve. Our personal prayer life and study with God will equip us the most to serve Him.
It has been a privilege to sit in the president position this past year. It was not a position
I ever imagined I would be asked to fill. I had to learn it was just another stretch in service that God had planned for me. The only way I have accomplished the tasks required has been to trust Him and walk faithfully in the direction He has pointed. I look forward to moving into the president emeritus position to continue to serve next year. Remember your WTE Board in your prayers as we journey on this faith walk together called Walk To Emmaus. Trust in Jesus! Jodi Wittrock PSWTE President

Lay Director Thoughts – Walk #202
As the Lay Director for the upcoming Men’s Fall Walk #202 at Avon UMC in Mt. Vernon (October 20-23), I’m excited to see the time fast approaching when the Walk will occur. God has called all of us He has chosen to serve on this Walk to be conduits who pass on the grace we experienced as Pilgrims to the men who will at-tend this Walk. Those of us who have served on Walks in the past have felt God’s grace in powerful ways, through serving as His “Hands and Feet,” as we “Pay it Forward” through sacrificial service on a Walk to Em-maus weekend. The new men who are serving for the first time on this Walk can also look forward to experi-encing God’s touch upon their lives as they give back what they’ve been given.
The theme I selected for Men’s Walk #202 is “Controlled By the Spirit.” This theme is based on Romans 8:9-10 which says, “You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.” I selected this theme and verse because it has had a real connection to my life experience. My life has been marked with struggles with addictions and I’ve seen the negative impact of not allowing the Holy Spirit within me to control my every thought, word, and action. In contrast, I’ve seen the real blessings that come when I’ve fully submit-ted myself to the Spirit’s control. I think we daily face the important choice of submitting to the Spirit, and walking in the new life the it brings, or choosing to go our own way and experiencing the darkness.
Please pray that the Pilgrims and team members of Walk #202 will be fully under the Spirit’s control and, as a result of this, experience the vibrant life the Spirit brings both during this Walk and in their 4th Day.
In Him,
Jon Wittrock
Lay Director Thoughts — Walk #203
Do you worry? Are you ever anxious? If you are like me, your answer to these questions is yes. There are so many
things in this world that can potentially cause us to be anxious and worry: our families, our careers, our health, the
weather, the economy, being the Lay Director of Walk #203, etc.
I am a worrier from way back. My earliest “worry” memories took place in second grade. I was a timid and shy little
girl, afraid to tell my teacher that my ruler was stuck in my desk and I was unable to free it. Instead, I couldn’t fall
asleep that night until my mother agreed to accompany me to school the next morning to deal with the troublesome ruler.
The next day, with my teacher watching from the front of the room, my mother easily freed the ruler.
Not long after that, the teacher moved us to different desks in the classroom. She admonished all of us to not write on
our desks. Unfortunately, my newly acquired desk was already covered with multiple etchings from previous doodlers.
Once again, I went home distraught. Once again, I was unable to fall asleep until my mother agreed to accompany me to
school in the morning. As we stood by the desk, my teacher came over to assess the latest problem. “Why, Debbie,”
she said. “These marks have been here for years. You are a little worry wart, aren’t you?”
It wasn’t until I studied Matthew chapter 6 in Bible Study Fellowship many years later that I learned that worry is not
just bad for your health (causing insomnia, ulcers, weight loss, weight gain, etc.), it is a sin! God knows our needs and
will provide for them. He instructs us to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will
be added unto us.” Worry is unbelief, not righteousness. In Philippians 4:6-7, (my favorite Bible verse), Paul gives us
clear guidelines on how to eliminate anxiety and worry: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer
and petition with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God, and the peace of God which passes all understanding
will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
God wants us to bring our concerns to him, remembering with thankfulness how he has answered our prayers in the past.
He promises a peace that we cannot begin to understand, a peace that will keep our hearts and minds in our Lord and
Savior, Jesus Christ, a “Peace that Passes Understanding.”
My theme song is “Have No Anxiety” by Ed Bolduc. It is Philippians 4:6-7 set to music. What a great way to memo-
rize Bible verses!! Both the team and pilgrims should know the verses by heart by the end of the weekend.. I will cling
to God’s promise of answered prayer and peace as I humbly prepare for Walk #203.
In His peace, Debbie Rouse, Lay Director WTE #203

13743 Avon Allen Rd, Mount Vernon, WA 98273

intersection. Turn left; go about .8 miles. The church is on the left.
An Important Message for Sponsors
Maybe it happens at the cross ceremony? Maybe it happens at Closura? It happens to all of us. You know -
that flood of names you think should also experience this incredible weekend. You have just lived in the grace and
love of Jesus for three days and you desperately want to share. This is a natural response and it allows Walk to
Emmaus to continue its ministry. This is good.
What follows now is the difficult part – choice of a pilgrim. Consider the purpose of Emmaus – “to develop
leaders for the church.” In other words, the weekend is designed to inspire, challenge, and develop servant-
leadership skills for Christian action. While Emmaus is open to every Christian denomination, it is not for
everyone. This is where your “prayerful discernment” is required.
“The aim of a sponsor should not be "to get all my friends to go," to fill up the weekend, to fix
people's problems, or to reproduce one's own religious experience in others. Rather, the aim of
the sponsor is to bring spiritual revitalization to Christians who will, in turn, bring new life and
vision to the work of the church in the congregation, home, workplace, and community. The aim
of sponsorship is to build up the body of Christ.” —Excerpted with permission from The Upper
Room Handbook on Emmaus by Stephen D. Bryant. Copyright © 1989 by The Upper Room.
Not every potential pilgrim is able to receive the benefits of an Emmaus weekend. Inconsistent church
attendance, feelings that God is not important and especially severe life crisis such as divorce, illness or job loss
probably indicate that the time is not right. Pastors on the clergy team do a marvelous job of serving. However,
these three days are not designed to provide an extended counseling session for these extreme emotional, mental or
spiritual needs.
Be certain that your pilgrim has a mature faith that will allow them to go deeper with Christ. Do they seek and
depend on Him daily? Are they involved in regular fellowship and community? Are they an active part of the life
and welfare of the church? Do they attend adult classes, retreats, group activities or outreach? If you can answer
“Yes” to these questions, you can safely assume that this person is good candidate.
Use wisdom, patience and, above all, prayer as you consider sponsorship. Make sure your choice is guided by
God’s leading and not your personal desire. This is an awesome responsibility and a precious gift.

WANTED: PILGRIMS!!!
Dear friends, we come together to serve as the hands and feet of Jesus and the weekends are held for the experience
of the pilgrim. Sponsorship is what keeps our organization growing and alive. I encourage you to spend some
prayer time asking and listening for who God would want you to sponsor on a WTE weekend. It may even be some-
one you don’t know other than through a common faith, which is what we all share in PSWTE. Read the article be-
low for sponsorship guidelines. I challenge you to cause a crisis. Let’s see our weekends be at capacity and have
waiting lists.

Statement of Leadership Commitment
Puget Sound Walk to Emmaus (PSWTE) is an ecumenical community of faith and is guided by God’s
Word. With many denominations represented, PSWTE leaders are called to maintain a healthy
accountability to our sponsoring body and are guided by two essential principles: (1) that every person
is created in the image of God, loved by God, and a person of sacred worth and (2) we affirm God’s
grace is available to all.
Therefore, we commit ourselves to be in ministry for, and with, all persons; serving “as Christ’s hands
and feet.” Each person involved in the leadership of a Walk for PSWTE must (1) have their own belief
in Christ and accepted Him as personal Lord and Savior; (2) be active in their local church; and (3) be
living a life that glorifies God and points others to a personal relationship with Christ.
As such, we must respect the privacy of individuals that may be struggling with issues of the world. We
must maintain the integrity of the ministry and refuse to let it become a platform for those who might
want to use it as a venue for their own personal or denominational views. Every effort must be taken to
ensure that matters will not be brought forward that could become divisive. Christians have differing
views on a number of important issues such as baptism, Holy Communion, birth control, religious ex-
periences, worship practices, and lifestyles. When any person is unable to lay aside their own views on
these, or any other topics that would divide the Emmaus community, it creates a problem that impacts
the integrity of the ministry. Those persons who are so passionate in pursuing their concerns and their
issues that they can not set aside those concerns and issues at any time should excuse themselves from
participation in Emmaus. Anyone who continues to pursue personal agendas will be counseled in grace
and given chances to set them aside when serving PSWTE. If situations continue to occur, individuals
will be asked to step down from serving the PSWTE.
The focus of the Emmaus ministry must remain on Jesus Christ and the essential theology and practices
of the Christian church in support of pilgrims. All leaders on a Walk to Emmaus weekend are asked to
commit to this purpose and to ensure all personal beliefs, theology, and agendas are left out of the week-
end. All clergy are asked to hold to their ordination vows and follow the guidelines of the Walk to Em-
maus ministry. All PSWTE leaders and members (including Board and Committee members, core
team, worship team, clergy, cha chas, speakers and back-ups, palanca, kitchen and love & agape team
chairs) are asked to read and commit to the PSWTE Assurance of Faith (see below or pswte.org web
site) to ensure that the Walk to Emmaus continues to provide an environment of grace, love, prayer, and
acceptance which accurately represents God’s commandments.
