SOMETHING ABOUT

That old devil Thern1ostat!! Raise

it? Lower it? Leave it alone? There

.._ ee1ns to be a general misconceptionof the value and use of the ho1ne ther-Jnostal a a control for our heating

) ten1 especially if you are of the opin-ion that setting it for 80° gives you

111ore heal than a 75° etting. The basiccomponent of a radiant heating sys-

tetn are: the Boiler Ior heating water;the Pu1np which pushes the water

around the c o i L ~ and the Thermostat

which controls the pun1p operation.

Throughout the year the boiler Inain·tains hot water. In n1ild weather, thishot ''\ater heals an additional coil ofhot \'Vater for domesti'c purposes and in

cold "eather provide a ource of sup-ply for heating in addition to its other

use. The te1nperature of this boiler wa-ter is regulated by a high and low lin1it"aquaslat'' within the unit, and onceinitially set is norn1ally never changed. The ther1nostat., on the other hand, de-tertnines the room te1nperature de-sired. Therefore setting the thermostat

at 72° doe nol 1nean that thi temper-ature will be n1aintained in the hon1eat all tin1e . It tnerely starts the pun1p

operating \vhen the temperature fallshelo'" the desired setting. When there

is a rapid tern perature drop outdoorsand the indoor Len1perature drops be-lo\V 72° the thennosta t starts the pump

o p e r a t i n g ~ but it takes approximately3 to 4 hours for the concrete slab toheat up and becotne effective. It is dur-ing this "time lag" period that the

ten1perature 1na) continue to fall in-

doors. Conversely, if there is a rapidincrea e in outdoor ternperalure., the

concrete lab continues to give off heat

regardles of the fact that the therino-stat has slopped the pump.

Ho\v can thi be corrected? Try toanticilJate the weather, If the weather

After a good deal of discussion, both

at the last Board of Directors n1eetingand at the January 26th n1en1bership1neeting, it was decided that the profit

froJn this year's Levitties will be turned

o\Jer to the North Shore Child Guid-ance Association. The n1otion "'a spon-sored by Mr. Dave Bland who spokeearnestly in support of the need for

the work this organization does. Al-though till quite ne\v, it i alreadyswan1ped ·w-ith applications by Ia1nilieof children \vith psychological eli turb-ances. It is important for this colnmil-tee to get as 1nuch support a po ible

is considered a very worthy and muchneeded cause and hould prove a boo11to the en tire con1munity.
