President’s Report Winter just won't give up! Every time we think it has raised its ugly head for the last time, it makes one additional stand. The water is warming so diving for everyone is just around the corner. Of course there are those in the Club who dive as if they were a mail carrier - Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these members from the completion of their weekly dives. We've had a bumpy schedule during the first three months of the year but there is an exciting schedule of activities for the remainder of the year. As of the writing of this report, the Curacao/Bonaire trip still has space available. There are twenty people who have signed up for the trip. That leaves 8 spaces available for the trip so if you wish to join us, sign up soon. We are still waiting for Spring Lake (Aquarena Springs) to open so we can schedule a Scientific Diver Course. As soon as the event can be scheduled, we'll send out an email blast to let you know! I'll be taking a count at the next couple of meetings to determine interested in a First Aid/CPR/AED course. Once we know how many are interested, we can set a date and price. Make sure to mark your calendars for the remainder of the outings which are scheduled for this year. A couple of them, Lake Greeson and Guadalupe River will have limited cabin availability but the availability of camping is always there. Don't forget the Dive Around Texas Challenge. You can earn points while having fun diving and win some great prizes. Check out their website at http://divearoundtexas.com. At the last meeting I mentioned the Trashy Diver Contest. This contest will be launched in June. The contest will run from June 1, 2013 - November 30, 2013. They will be sending me info on the contest and when received will share it; hopefully in the June Newsletter. This month I challenge each member to invite and bring a guest to the May or June Membership Meetings or to one of the Outings. The water is warming up, get out and dive! Danny

Lake Greeson Murfreesboro, Arkansas

August 10-11, 2013 Lake Greeson is a 12 mile, 7260 acre lake located approximately seven miles north of the town of Murfreesboro, Arkansas. The lake is a popular location for boating, swimming, fishing, and Yes, even diving! We have an outing planned to visit Lake Greeson the weekend of August 10. Two extremely comfortable lodges are currently reserved, sleeping a total of 18. Campsites are also available but have not been reserved, and there are motels located a short seven miles away in the town of Murfreesboro. We also have a “party barge” reserved for our use on both Saturday and Sunday. The boat is perfect for diving and has a sun deck for relaxing and soaking up some rays. Of course, if you have a boat you’d like to bring with you, the extra boats available will be more than welcome! The cost of the outing will be $125 on the high side. That is for two nights lodging (Friday and Saturday), and our use of the party barge for both Saturday and Sunday. A sign-up sheet will be at the May, June and July meetings, and a non-refundable deposit of $50/pp is due no later than July 27 to secure your lodging. If you wish to camp or stay in town, no deposit is required. Meal shares will be lunch and dinner on Saturday – everyone will be on their own for any other meals. Both lodges have full kitchens, and there is a great grocery store in town. However, we must state at this point that the closest store for Adult Beverages is in the Texarkana area, about one hour away. From the DFW Metroplex, travel time is roughly four to five hours, depending on what part of town you depart from and what time of day. If you’d like to take a peek online at the lodging, the website is www.swahacabins.com. Campsites are non-reservable but you can contact the Corps of Engineers regarding camping at: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers 155 Dynamite Hill Road Murfreesboro, AR 71958-9720 Phone: (870) 285-2151 Hope to see you there!

The Diving Rebels Scuba Club

Invites you on a Trip to Curacao and Bonaire for the 2013 CORAL SPAWN

The Diving Rebels Scuba Club is organizing a group trip to Bonaire with an option to start your vacation with a few days in Curacao before moving over to Bonaire. The trip dates are September 18-21, 2013 at Lion Dive on Curacao and September 21-28, 2013 at Buddy Dive on Bonaire.

Bonaire had no trouble earning its reputation as the “Shore Diving Capital of the World.” With gently sloping reefs, stellar wrecks and walls, and an abundance of marine life all within a few steps of the coastline, it doesn’t get much better than this anywhere on the planet. All you have to do is drive along the coast and watch for the yellow stones that mark each site. You can keep your own schedule, and you certainly aren’t limited to a few sites. Most of the great diving here is just a fin kick away, making this Dutch island’s first-place ranking well deserved.

If you have ever wanted to see the "Coral Spawn", this is your opportunity. The “Coral Spawn” occurs 7 days after the 9th full moon of the calendar year. In 2013, the 9th full moon falls on September 19th and the coral spawn is predicted to occur on September 26th. It does not last long and this is your chance to be in Bonaire during a coral spawn. Although these predictions are certainly not an exact science and not guaranteed to occur during this trip, it is well documented that various species of coral and other marine invertebrates spawn in cycles that are closely tied to the full moons in the months of August, September, and October each year.

Want to begin your vacation a few days earlier? Join us on Curacao on September 18, 2013. Arrive on Wednesday, dive on Thursday and Friday or just relax on the beach and unwind before departing for Bonaire on Saturday the 21st. Chosen as one of the Top 10 Destinations for 2012 by Frommer's, the island of Curacao is a paradise for scuba drivers and nature lovers alike. Its ruggedly beautiful landscape provides endless opportunities for fun. Immerse yourself in mysterious and colorful underwater worlds at more than 60 diving locations. Including some popular wreck dives, most notably, the Superior Producer at a maximum depth of 90 feet. The Tugboat is also very popular as it is in shallow water at 15 feet and is excellent for photography. Also, there is The Airplane Wreck, which is a shore dive and the location is marked on the surface with a buoy. The best dives are the Mushroom Forest and Alice in Wonderland where there are copious amounts of star coral. If you are interested in joining us, more information and pricing can be found on the website at: http://www.divingrebels.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=122:bonaire2013&catid=17&Itemid=2

DIVING REBELS APRIL OUTING Tyler State Park April 5th-7th

By: Kelly Barentine !The annual Tyler State Park outing took place on the heels of a week with wicked weather and cold temperatures. In the past a storm has generally passed through to cause minor disruptions to the weekend’s events but has never dampened the festivities. Fortunately that was not the case this year as all we Rebels had to contend with were some stiff winds. The temperatures were mild with plenty of sun; I know this girl got a little color to her. The weekend kicked off with Brian & Nick Neal graciously volunteering to grab the 3 sites for us on Friday morning. That in itself offers benefits for them because you get your pick of where you choose to set your camp. Brian & Nick we thank you for doing a good job and getting us the best possible sites. Due to Danny’s ankle injury we were not able to camp this year as we have in the past 4 years but at least 4-5 groups made it out there Friday night to begin the relaxing weekend. My Co-coordinator, Tina Caron planned to make it out there Friday with the club gear but due to an unforeseen work crisis she could not make it out to the location until around lunchtime on Saturday. She proved to be an extremely dedicated Activities Director as her work crisis continued well into the evening on Saturday. While it would have been easier for her to stay home to deal with the numerous conference calls she was required to field she fulfilled her responsibility to the club bringing the gear and took her numerous calls at Tyler in her car. Thank you Tina, for going the extra mile! Since Tina was to provide breakfast Saturday morning but was unable to do so, Johnny Griffin and Connie Mitchell graciously jumped in and agreed to move their breakfast plans up from Sunday to Saturday. Although I am not aware of what was served for breakfast I do know the 7-8 Friday night campers did not have any complaints. I have never known Johnny and Connie to disappoint in their culinary skills. Travis Wells and Lisa Craft had lunch duty and they made it a feast. They made delicious beef and chicken tacos along with homemade guacamole. They made sure those of us attending had the choice of whatever taco we wanted whether it be soft, crunchy or even taco salad. The hit of the meal was the guacamole and believe me the bowl was scrapped clean! Travis and Lisa did an outstanding job! After lunch about 7 Rebels braved the 58° water, although most of them were suited up in their thickest mil suit or dry suit for protection from the cold lake. Many were on a quest to find items needed for the Scavenger Hunt. They did not boast of clear visibility but enjoyed getting wet all the same. The one brave soul was Nick Neal who dove in just a t-shirt and swimming shorts. Personally, I think he was crazy but since he actually made the dive and I did not I must give him his props. After the diving group got out of the water and warmed up a little around the fire many went off to find more items to attempt to win the Scavenger Hunt. To qualify for the hunt you needed to find 10 different items and 5 of those had to be found under the water while diving. Of course because we always try to practice safe diving skills you were required to have a buddy as well. Everyone assembled around the campsite toward the evening time to partake of the amazing meal cooked by Jim and Linda Magnuson. We had the rare privilege of enjoying another feast of beef or chicken tacos for dinner but this meal included rice, beans and amazing salad. Even though they made tacos as well as Travis and Lisa the style and taste was completely different. You could not have asked for a better meal!

Page 11

After dinner the winning buddy team was awarded their prize, each receiving a $25 Visa gift card. It was a tight completion between buddy team Travis & Bill against team Becky & Mark S. Travis and Bill managed to take the prize by a very narrow margin and each won a $25 Visa gift card. Way to go Travis & Bill!!! Pictures were taken for the contestants so that they could enter into the Rodenberry Trashiest Diver competition if they chose to do so. I do have to mention that if Tina or I though of listing an UMBRELLA as a Scavenger Hunt find, Becky and Mark would have won as they actually found one in the lake. The picture below shows their find and I commend them for fighting to bring it in and not leave it at the bottom of the lake. After the prize was given out most everyone just sat around discussing various topics until it was time for those of us who could not camp to leave for home. The majority stayed and enjoyed the evening and fell asleep under the stars and listening to only the wind and wildlife around them. The next morning breakfast was made for the campers courtesy of Tina Caron. In the end, a good time was had by all! !

Restaurant of the Month-May

Where: Prince Lebanese Gril l (BYOB) Address: !502 West Randol Mill Rd Arlington-76011 When: Friday, May 3rd at 7:00 pm Website: www.princelebanesegrill.com Email: Kelly-kelldan2667@hotmail .com

or [email protected]

This month we are moving from Cow Town back to Arlington, which I believe is the Heart of DFW. We will be trying a cuisine that is new to RofM which is Lebanese food and comes highly recommended by Rebels, Jim & Rita Simpson. Prince Lebanese Grill is located just off Cooper street south of I-30 and has been widely praised. If you go to their website you will see that even Guy Fieri from “Diners Drive-Ins and Dives,” have enjoyed the exotic meals offered by this establishment. Come and hang out with us as we enjoy not only a good meal but great company! This monthly event speaks for itself because we have found it as popular as our dive outings. Folks, we are realistic because there is nothing better than diving so nobody is getting ahead of themselves here. BUT WAIT!!! We still strongly recommend that you RSVP if you plan to attend the RofM. We want to make sure there is always room for you at the table we must have a tentative head count for the restaurant but you are not committing to anything financially. We must mention that this is NOT subsidized by club funds so be sure to bring your wallet to pay for your meal. Thank you, Kelly Barentine, Co-coordinator NOTE: We are in need of recommendations for RofM so please email those to Connie or myself. This is your opportunity to tell us where to go! !

APRIL 2013

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH AND SOCIAL OUTING

By: Connie Mitchell

Wow can you believe how fast this year is going by, we are headed into the Month of May and summer is just around the corner.... I think. Lol Diving Rebels met for a combined Social Outing and ROM for April. Some gathered to see the movie "Titanic" at the Museum of Science and History and spend the day around Fort Worth, and then we all met up at the Flying Fish for dinner at 6pm. We had 22 people show up to eat and enjoy the evening, with a couple of new Members coming also. The Restaurant laid out a long line of tables and we sat right down, eagerly searching the posted menu for items of importance. Once orders were places and drinks in hand I gave a shout out to Keith on his new Job and moving to Ok City, which makes me very sad...:( I also invited all the Rebels to a going away party for Keith, given by Johnny & me at our house on the 20th. Everyone was talking about the trips planned for this year and adventures we have already had. Sounds like a lot of people are on the move to get into the water... Blue Water that is. This ROM has been a great hit for the Rebels and I give a BIG shout out to Kelly B. for all her time and effort in everything she does. We will continue into next month w a new spot to EAT. Watch for the posting in the News Letter and on our Websites. We need your suggestion please as Kelly and I are running out of places to go. Give us a holler and let us know what you would like to see on the menu next. You know how to find us... Connie
